Jamaat-e-Islami
on Saturday held its first-ever stand-alone grand rally in Dhaka amid efforts to undermine secular character of the country and bring theocracy into power.

The Saturday's rally was chaired by the party's Ameer
Shafiqur Rahman
. He warned party supporters that Bangladesh might witness further violent struggle to keep it on the right track.
In an oblique reference to
Awami League
Rahman said, 'From 28 October 2006, onward, all those responsible for different politically motivated 'massacres', including that of deaths of army officers in the then paramilitary BDR border guard force and the events of July 2024, must be tried on the soil of Bangladesh."
The JeI which worked against independence of Bangladesh was completely banned by the Awami League days ahead of Sheikh Hasina's ouster. The interim regime led by Professor Muhammad Yunus later lifted the ban.

At the rally, Rahman said that the party would now spearhead a movement against
corruption
and extortion. JeI's show of strength may pit it against its long-term ally
BNP
.
If voted to power, no lawmaker or minister associated with the party would accept government plots and tax-exempt vehicles or personally handle public funds, he claimed. One of the major agendas of the party is to wage a campaign to introduce a proportional representation (PR) system in the national election.
Senior party leader Nayeb-e-Ameer Abdullah Mohammad Taher told the rally that elections under the PR system were the most appropriate method in the current political context. JeI's track record in general elections has been patchy as the party could never win a decent number of seats even when in alliance with BNP.
BNP is opposed to the PR system. Several other Islamist parties and leaders of the student-led National Citizen Party (NCP) attended the rally. Rahman, 66, collapsed twice while addressing the rally and was later hospitalised, according to party leaders.

Best Chapters Still Lie Ahead: Netanyahu Hails India-Israel Friendship On 79th Independence Day

Calling India and Israel as "two proud democracies", Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday extended wishes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and people of India on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day. In his greetings, Netanyahu stated that both India and Israel have achieved much together and expressed confidence that the best chapters of the partnership between two nations are still waiting to be written. "Congratulations to my dear friend PM Narendra Modi and the people of India on your Independence Day. Israel and India are two proud democracies, bound by history, innovation, and friendship. Our nations have achieved much together and the best chapters of our partnership still lie ahead," said Netanyahu in his message that was posted on X by the Israeli Prime Minister's Office. Israel President Isaac Herzog also extended wishes to President Droupadi Murmu and people of India on Independence Day, noting that India's friendship strengthens Israel deeply in these difficult times. "On India's Independence Day, I send heartfelt greetings to President Droupadi Murmu, and all the people of India. May you enjoy a year of peace and prosperity. Your friendship with Israel in these difficult days strengthens us deeply. May the bond between our nations continue to flourish — and may we soon see the safe return of all our hostages," Herzog posted on X. Israeli Knesset's Speaker Amir Ohana also extended wishes to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and the people of India on Independence Day. He also shared an old picture of him and Birla alongside other leaders. In a post shared on X, Ohana wrote, "Heartfelt congratulations to all Indians on Independence Day! India On behalf of the Knesset, I extend my warmest wishes to my dear friend Om Birla and all the citizens of India. May the friendship between our countries and parliaments always remain strong." Israel's Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar attended the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort in New Delhi and termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech "inspiring." He also shared a picture of himself at the iconic venue. "Inspiring speech by PM Narendra Modi at the Red Fort. Happy Independence Day India," Azar posted on X. In April, Netanyahu had dialled PM Modi expressing his condolences, and those of the Israeli people, over the barbaric "Islamist terrorist attack in Kashmir". Prime Minister Modi thanked him for sharing in India's mourning and emphasised that the two countries stand shoulder to shoulder in the global campaign against murderous terrorism. PM Modi shared the barbaric nature of the cross-border terrorist attack and reiterated India's firm resolve to bring the perpetrators and their supporters to justice. The two leaders had also discussed advancing the transportation and communications corridor that will link Asia – via Saudi Arabia and Israel – with Europe.

Turkiye to provide weapons, support to Syria under new defence agreement

Ankara, Aug 14 (AP) Turkiye will provide weapons, military equipment, and logistical support to Syria under a newly signed defence cooperation agreement, Turkish Defence Ministry officials said Thursday. The announcement came a day after Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler and Syria's Defence Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation on military training and consultancy, reinforcing Turkiye's support to Syria's interim government. Syria last month requested Turkiye's support to strengthen its defence capabilities following sectarian violence in the country that also drew intervention by Israel. Under the agreement, Turkiye would share its 'knowledge and experience" and supply military equipment, weapons systems and logistical materials to help strengthen the country's capabilities, Turkish Defence Ministry officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to be quoted by name. Syria's newly formed interim government has faced mounting challenges in restoring order and addressing the deep scars left by nearly 14 years of civil conflict, following the ouster of former President Bashar Assad by Islamist-led rebel forces in December. Most recently, hundreds were killed in clashes in the southern province of Sweida between government forces and local Bedouin tribesmen on one side and fighters from the Druze minority on the other. Turkiye has been supportive of Syria's new administration, which is formed largely by rebels that Ankara backed during the civil war. Also Wednesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warned Israel and Kurdish fighters to cease actions threatening Syria's stability, accusing them of undermining the country's efforts to reestablish itself after more than a decade of civil war. Speaking during a joint news conference Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani in Ankara, Fidan accused the US-allied and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF, of stalling the implementation of an agreement that was reached in March to merge with the Syrian army. Last week, representatives of Syria's various ethnic and religious groups held a conference in the northeastern Syrian city of Hassakeh — which is under the SDF's control — and called for the formation of a decentralised state and the drafting of a new constitution that guarantees religious, cultural and ethnic pluralism. The Syrian government criticised the meeting, and alleged that among the attendees were some with secessionist ambitions. It said that as a result it no longer intends to join planned talks with the SDF in Paris that had been agreed upon in late July. No date had yet been set for the Paris talks. The Selective Amnesia On Partition

Last Updated: Does the Left shun Partition talk because it shatters the 'both sides equally guilty' myth? On August 14, Pakistan celebrates its birth. Since 2021, the Narendra Modi government has chosen to mark that date as a stigma on humanity, declaring it 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day"—an evocative tribute to the excesses that claimed millions of lives. The initiative is not unlike the West's 'Holocaust Memorial Day", which honours victims and survivors while warning of the dangers of antisemitism. Similarly, Partition Horrors Remembrance Day not only pays tribute to victims but reminds the world that Pakistan was born not of a hope-filled progressive impulse but of a medieval separatist whim—an exclusive homeland for Muslims, where they would be the chosen people. But why pass up a chance to expose Pakistan's nihilistic outlook—one its army chief, General Asim Munir, recently exalted in his defence of the two-nation theory, days before Islamist supremacists struck in Pahalgam? Does the Left shun Partition talk because it shatters the 'both sides equally guilty" myth? Is history being secularised to bury the roots of Muslim separatism for political ends?
