Best Chapters Still Lie Ahead: Netanyahu Hails India-Israel Friendship On 79th Independence Day
In his greetings, Netanyahu stated that both India and Israel have achieved much together and expressed confidence that the best chapters of the partnership between two nations are still waiting to be written.
"Congratulations to my dear friend PM Narendra Modi and the people of India on your Independence Day. Israel and India are two proud democracies, bound by history, innovation, and friendship. Our nations have achieved much together and the best chapters of our partnership still lie ahead," said Netanyahu in his message that was posted on X by the Israeli Prime Minister's Office.
Israel President Isaac Herzog also extended wishes to President Droupadi Murmu and people of India on Independence Day, noting that India's friendship strengthens Israel deeply in these difficult times.
"On India's Independence Day, I send heartfelt greetings to President Droupadi Murmu, and all the people of India. May you enjoy a year of peace and prosperity. Your friendship with Israel in these difficult days strengthens us deeply. May the bond between our nations continue to flourish — and may we soon see the safe return of all our hostages," Herzog posted on X.
Israeli Knesset's Speaker Amir Ohana also extended wishes to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and the people of India on Independence Day. He also shared an old picture of him and Birla alongside other leaders.
In a post shared on X, Ohana wrote, "Heartfelt congratulations to all Indians on Independence Day! India On behalf of the Knesset, I extend my warmest wishes to my dear friend Om Birla and all the citizens of India. May the friendship between our countries and parliaments always remain strong."
Israel's Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar attended the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort in New Delhi and termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech "inspiring." He also shared a picture of himself at the iconic venue.
"Inspiring speech by PM Narendra Modi at the Red Fort. Happy Independence Day India," Azar posted on X.
In April, Netanyahu had dialled PM Modi expressing his condolences, and those of the Israeli people, over the barbaric "Islamist terrorist attack in Kashmir".
Prime Minister Modi thanked him for sharing in India's mourning and emphasised that the two countries stand shoulder to shoulder in the global campaign against murderous terrorism. PM Modi shared the barbaric nature of the cross-border terrorist attack and reiterated India's firm resolve to bring the perpetrators and their supporters to justice.
The two leaders had also discussed advancing the transportation and communications corridor that will link Asia – via Saudi Arabia and Israel – with Europe.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the Centre has circulated the draft of next-generation GST reforms among states and sought their cooperation to implement the proposal before Diwali. He said the move would benefit the poor, the middle class, and businesses of all sizes. Addressing an event after inaugurating two expressways, Modi said the Centre intends to make the GST law simpler and revise tax rates. The GST Council is expected to meet next month to deliberate on the proposal. 'For us, reform means the expansion of good governance,' Modi said, adding that continuous focus was being placed on reforms. 'This Diwali, citizens will receive a double bonus through the GST reform.' Under the plan, the existing four GST slabs—5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%—will be replaced with just two: 5% and 18%, along with a special 40% bracket for demerit or 'sin' goods such as tobacco and online gaming. Items currently taxed at 12%, like butter, fruit juices, and dry fruits, would move to 5%, while electronics, cement, and other goods from the 28% slab would shift to 18%, as per the proposal. The reform aims to prevent accumulation of input tax credit and reduce demands for further tweaks. While the changes may initially cause revenue loss, the Centre expects increased consumption to offset the impact. Nearly 99% of goods in the 12% category and 90% of goods in the 28% slab are expected to move to lower rates, easing the burden on households and businesses. Alongside GST reforms, the prime minister reiterated his call for 'vocal for local.' 'To make India stronger, we must take inspiration from Chakradhari Mohan (Lord Shri Krishna) to make India self-reliant, we must follow the path of Charkhadhari Mohan (Mahatma Gandhi),' Modi said. Radhakrishnan named NDA's V-P candidate
New Delhi: Maharashtra Governor Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, a seasoned BJP leader from Tamil Nadu with an RSS background, was on Sunday named the vice-presidential candidate of the ruling National Democratic Alliance. BJP president J P Nadda made the announcement following a meeting of the party's parliamentary board, which included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and consulting the party's allies. Nadda appealed for unanimous election of Radhakrishnan (67), an OBC leader and two-time former member of Lok Sabha, to the constitutional position, saying the BJP leaders had spoken to the Opposition parties last week and will continue to do so. The Opposition leaders had told the BJP interlocutors that they can make up their mind only after being told of the ruling alliance's nominee, Nadda said, adding that his party will reach out to them again. Due to the comfortable majority of the BJP and its allies in the electoral college, comprising Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members, Radhakrishnan's election is all but certain, and the party hopes that his elevation will help it make fresh inroads in Tamil Nadu, where elections are due next year. Radhakrishnan belongs to the influential Gounder caste, an OBC community, in Tamil Nadu. Nadda emphasised on his nearly 40 years in public life, noting that he is well regarded in different parties and commands respect among various sections of society. PM unveils next-gen GST reform draft
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Sunday that the Central government has drafted a proposal for the next-generation Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms and has sent it to the states. He sought the cooperation of state governments to implement the proposal before Diwali this year. Speaking after inaugurating two new expressways in Delhi, Modi emphasised that these reforms would benefit not only the poor and middle class but also both small and large businesses. Modi explained that the proposed changes in the GST law aim to simplify the system and adjust tax rates, which will benefit a wide range of people and businesses. 'This is a major step toward making GST more accessible, especially for businesses and consumers,' he said. The Central government intends to introduce a simplified GST structure and will consider revising tax slabs to reduce the burden on various segments of society. In his Independence Day speech on August 15, the PM had already announced plans for these changes, describing them as a step toward promoting good governance. 'For us, reforms mean moving forward with good governance,' he had said earlier. The Prime Minister reiterated that the government would focus on continuous reforms to make life easier for people and businesses alike.
