KUALA LUMPUR: Ruben Amorim and Co may have faced boos from the stands at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, but the Manchester United manager is sticking to his footballing philosophy — even after his side's 1-0 defeat to the spirited Asean All-Stars on Wednesday.
The Portuguese tactician, who took over the Red Devils on Nov 1, 2024, admitted his side lacked sharpness and urgency in the friendly encounter, but insisted that he would continue trusting the playing principles that got him this far in his career.
'We should perform better. We were slow, and we don't have it in us yet to win every exercise in training or every game,' said Amorim.

'But most importantly, we didn't have any injuries, and we move forward.'
Amorim was clear that the defeat, while frustrating, would not derail his vision for the team ahead of the new Premier League season.
'The way I play is the same as other coaches. You have an idea, you stick with it. I am just a coach that reached this level because of certain things. Of course we need to improve the results, but I am confident of doing it,' he said.
Fans in Kuala Lumpur, including many donning the famous red jersey, voiced their discontent as United struggled to break down an All-Stars team that had only trained together for two days.
Amorim acknowledged the fans' passion and their right to demand more.
'I feel guilty when it comes to the performance of the team. The boos from the fans – we need it. They were always there, even when we lost. If they see it's not working, they'll tell us.'
United's lack of goals was another concern highlighted by Amorim especially the poor form of Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund, who has been ridiculed by many fans for his poor movement and finishing as a striker.
'We assess that. We prepare for the first game of the Premier League. Sometimes, you can't overthink. You go for the holidays, reset, and the environment in the training ground can build confidence.'
Despite the frustration, Amorim was gracious in defeat and hinted at internal changes ahead.
'There will be changes. You have to wait for next season. We will see. But the hunger to win every game - that's what I want to bring back to United.'
Meanwhile, United captain and midfielder Bruno Fernandes said he expected the All-Stars to produce a top performance, but at the end of the day, he knew the magnitude of his club globally.
'We expected a hard game against them. We know there are lots of talents here in Asia. We came for the fans to see us and also for the young boys to experience this,' said the Portuguese international.
'It was nice to be playing in front of these fans and feel the love from them.'

Cunha coup: Man United trigger £62.5m clause to land Wolves hitman
MANCHESTER, June 2 — Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, the two Premier League clubs said yesterday, with the Brazil forward joining on a five-year contract. United triggered the 26-year-old's release clause, which was worth around £62.5 million (RM358.7 million), a team source said. The Old Trafford club also have the option of extending his contract by a year. Cunha has scored 33 times and provided 15 assists in 92 appearances for Wolves, with 15 of those goals coming in the Premier League this season. He becomes United's first summer signing. 'Manchester United has reached agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian forward's signing is subject to visa and registration,' United said in a statement. The transfer is a record sale for Wolves, eclipsing the £53 million they received from Manchester City for midfielder Matheus Nunes in 2023. 'Everyone at Wolves would like to thank Matheus for his contributions in old gold and wish he and his family the best of luck for the future,' the West Midlands club said. Wolves had signed Cunha on an initial loan deal from Spanish side Atletico Madrid in December 2022 before signing him on a permanent four-year contract. In February, Cunha agreed a new deal to extend his stay at Molineux until 2029. He started his senior career at Swiss club Sion before joining Germany's RB Leipzig in 2018 and then moving to German second-tier side Hertha BSC in 2020. Jubilant PSG parade Champions League trophy in Paris
PARIS: An estimated 100,000 fans packed the Champs-Elysees on Sunday to cheer the Paris Saint-Germain players and staff as they paraded the Champions League trophy in the French capital. The team came by bus directly from Roissy airport after touching down from Munich, where they beat Inter Milan in Saturday's final. They were greeted along the route by jubilant supporters. Some had flags or flares, all wanted to savour their club winning the biggest prize in European club football for the first time in their history. The players, all wearing shirts with '25' on it, brandished the trophy and addressed the crowd as they drove. "Lets' all sing together," shouted their emblematic captain Marquinhos. Coach Luis Enrique and his team, including Desire Doue, the 19-year-old who lit up the final by scoring twice in the dazzling 5-0 win over Inter, later went to a reception at the Elysee palace hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron. Police were on high alert to prevent any repetition of the scenes that scarred the victory celebrations in the capital after the final whistle on Saturday night. An estimated 11.8 million viewers watched the game on French television which sparked a long night of wild celebrations. Fans thronged the streets of the capital, letting off flares and fireworks as decades of pent-up frustration were released. Police made nearly 600 arrests across France, the interior ministry said, after more than 200 cars were torched and police clashed with youths. In the southwest town of Dax, a 17-year-old boy died after being stabbed in the chest. A 23-year-old man riding a scooter in central Paris also died after being hit by a vehicle. A policeman was put in an induced coma after being injured by a firework. President Macron on Sunday called the violence "unacceptable" while PSG also condemned it. "These isolated acts are contrary to the club's values and in no way represent the vast majority of our supporters, whose exemplary behaviour throughout the season deserves to be commended," PSG said. The violence paled against an incident last Monday when a Premier League victory parade by Liverpool Football Club in the English city ended in horrific scenes after a car ploughed into the crowd, leaving 79 injured. After Saturday's final, Macron hailed PSG's victory on social media as a "day of glory." "Bravo, we are all proud," he wrote. "Paris is the capital of Europe tonight." The margin of victory was the greatest in a final in the history of the Champions League or the European Cup that preceded it. Qatar Sports Investments pumped hundreds of millions of euros pumped into PSG since buying an ailing club in 2011, but over the last couple of have seasons turned their back on their former policy of signing stars such as Neymar and Lionel Messi and focussed instead spent their money on young French talent. Doue cemented his status as a rising star in world football. Senny Mayulu, another 19-year-old, came on as a substitute towards the end and scored the fifth goal. "I still can't believe it, I think it will only seem real tomorrow," Mayulu said after the game. "In the dressing room, everyone broke down in their own way, you could see it in their eyes, people were filled with joy and pride." PSG had lost their only other appearance in the final five years ago was the result but after Saturday's triumph, said they planned to win more.

Turning into bravehearts
On fire: Aaron Chia (left) and Soh Wooi Yik pose after their victory against Kim Won-ho-Seo Seung-jae of South Korea at the Singapore Open. — AFP PETALING JAYA: It's a new era of consistency for men's doubles players Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik under coach Herry Iman Pierngadi. Yesterday, the former world champions Aaron-Wooi Yik fought bravely to slay formidable South Korean foes Kim Won-ho-Seo Seung-jae 15-21, 21-18, 21-19 in the men's doubles final to lift their first Singapore Open title. There were anxious moments towards the end but the Malaysians did not crumble as they used to in the past, but instead, had the last laugh by outfoxing the All-England champions to bag the US$74,000 prize money. It was the Malaysians' third title and fourth final appearance this year. In fact, it was their third back-to-back final but they hardly showed any sign of lethargy at the Lion City but kept attacking the world No. 10 Won-ho-Seung-jae. And Aaron attributed their fine run to their growing confidence under Herry. 'We are glad and happy with our consistent show. 'One of the aspects that had made the difference for us is our new coach. We have to give him the credit,' said Aaron. 'He had polished our game play and is turning us to be more solid and consistent. 'And all these are helping us to feel more confident of ourselves and is leading us to play confidently.' Wooi Yik, who has shown a lot of improvement and seemed more calm under duress, said their trust in each other also played a key role. 'Our trust in each other and the match preparation made the difference in our game. It was close in the decider but Aaron calmed me down. We wanted a victory but fortunately, we didn't rush into it,' said Wooi Yik. Will they have enough fuel in the tank to give another good showing and stay unbeatable at the Indonesian Open starting tomorrow in Jakarta? Aaron and Wooi Yik do hope so. 'We still have much to improve, as long as we train hard and translate it into our game, the results will come,' added Wooi Yik. Meanwhile, Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn was on top of the world after beating Lu Guangzu of China 21-6, 21-10 in just 37 minutes to lift the men's singles title. The former world champion, currently ranked second behind Shi Yuqi of China in the world ranking, is set to become Thailand's first men's singles player to be ranked No. 1 in the world when the Badminton World Federation (BWF) publish the new list tomorrow.
