Celeb chef Jordan Andino dishes on two new baking shows and his Manila restaurant
The Filipino-Canadian chef, restaurateur and television personality has been busy in the studio kitchen, serving as a judge on two new shows — 'Halloween Bakeshop' and 'Holiday Bakeshop' — that will premiere this fall on Canada's Flavour Network. At the same time, he's partnering with Filipino chef Francis Tolentino on Union, a buzzy new restaurant opening in Manila, Philippines, on Nov. 8.
Meanwhile, Andino remains the culinary director of Continuum wellness club, an ultraluxe gym and health retreat in NYC's Greenwich Village. And he's always on daddy duty, doting on his adorable 2-year-old daughter Malou with his wife of nearly four years, Erin Andino.

Of all those jobs, the gourmand says fatherhood is the most important. 'I get emotional thinking about it,' he tells Alexa. 'To me, it means making sure that the person that you are rearing is the best contributor to the world — so someone who is thoughtful, caring, proactive, ambitious, driven, loving and considerate.'
From a young age, his parents — Toronto chef and restaurateur Richard Andino and model and actress Joanna Garel — instilled in him an achievement mindset. And they were strict. 'My dad taught me the meaning of hard work and the meaning of a dollar,' says the tastemaker. 'The immigrant mentality is: Head down and work as hard as you can to do better for the next generation.'

The TV chef was born in Toronto, then moved to Manhattan Beach, Calif., with his mom when he was 9. He developed a love of surfing and skateboarding in the Golden State, and a passion for food while making pastries, pizza and hot apps in his father's kitchens every summer. After attending Cornell University's renowned Hotel School, he worked at top restaurants including The French Laundry, Spago and Jean-Georges. In 2015, he opened Flip Sigi, a fast-casual Filipino taqueria in Greenwich Village, later adding outposts in Chicago and Jersey City, NJ. In 2023, he unveiled Carriage House, a New American restaurant with global influences, on NYC's West 10th Street. Over the last year, he shuttered those locations to focus on TV and other projects.
With his food world expertise, gift of gab, down-to-earth demeanor and dazzling smile, Andino is a natural on camera. He's hosted shows including Netflix's 'Cook at All Costs' and Cooking Channel's 'Late Nite Eats,' judged on series from 'Chopped' to 'Worst Cooks in America' and appeared on programs like 'Beat Bobby Flay,' 'Rachael Ray' and Selena Gomez's 'Selena + Chef.' He also runs a busy side business catering events for brands such as Versace and Oscar de la Renta and has worked as a personal chef for celebs, including Kyrie Irving and the Kardashians. 'They were actually some of the best clients I've ever cooked for because they're normal,' he says of the famous family. 'They eat a lot! I love them.'

His latest screen effort: baking battles. Eight contestants will compete for a $25,000 prize on the two seasonal programs, which are hosted by Canadian actor Lauren Ash and co-judged with Kareem 'Mr. Bake' Queeman. 'The shows feature some of the best bakers I've ever seen,' observes Andino. 'They found people who have incredible attention to detail.'
Andino says that he has evolved as a judge, giving more critical feedback on these programs than in the past. In other words, he strikes a balance between sweet and salty.

Where else can you chase an order of adobo chicken with a banana split and a 3 a.m. game of Pai Gow? No offense to that alfredo, but the Filipino dishes are the highlights here. The sinigang with pork ribs is particularly noteworthy, bracingly sour and fortifying. I finally made it to Bar Shoji, the nighttime incarnation of the café behind the matcha einspänner craze; I've been dying to go since Cesar put it on our Now List. Does chef Intu-on Kornnawong's halibut ceviche ever sing. It's the dish that features the most overt Thai flavors — Kornnawong was formerly the chef at Jo's Modern Thai in Oakland — and you'll smell the lemongrass before the dish even hits the table. There's plenty of spice, and the nori rice crackers provided for scooping add delicate crunch. Deep in the Richmond District, Butter Love Bakeshop is not the place to go if you're seeking the immaculately laminated and shellacked goodies you might see in the window of a Parisian patisserie. Its crumbles, pies and doughnuts are rustic, even a little visually rough around the edges, but the pastry is nonetheless terrific. Case in point, the mega buttery, flaky puff pastry swaddling a full-sized hot dog and shredded cheese. Sure the frank was a little well done on the ends where it poked out of its pastry casing, but I can't imagine a better hand-held snack to take to the park or the beach. Chase it with a slice of seasonal fruit crumble.

‘The Unrestricted War' to Premiere Online Exclusively on Gan Jing World
An edge-of-your-seat political thriller inspired by true events during the early days of the COVID-19 outbreak in China, 'The Unrestricted War,' premieres on Aug. 8, exclusively on GJW+, the streaming platform hosted by Gan Jing World. ' The Unrestricted War, ' directed by Toronto-based filmmaker Yan Ma, will stream at 9 p.m. ET and includes a live watch party. After the film, viewers can join an interactive Q&A with the director and the film's lead actress, Uni Park. The film tells the story of Dr. Jim Conrad, a prominent Canadian virologist working in Beijing on a biotech initiative. His work takes a dark turn when he and his wife, Sophie, are detained without warning by Chinese Communist Party (CCP) secret police. With their young daughter still in China and their lives in peril, Jim is issued a chilling ultimatum: steal a classified viral sample from a high-security laboratory, or disappear forever. 'This is an absolutely stunning film. Stunning both because of the technical quality of it and the performance, and the story. It is hard to overstate the importance of it at this moment, because we are at war with the Chinese Communist Party,' Frank Gaffney, president of the Institute for the American Future, said at 'The Unrestricted War' premiere screening and panel discussion event on Capitol Hill on July 31. The film's title refers to a real-life Chinese military strategy meant to destabilize enemy societies without firing a shot, called unrestricted warfare. Unlike conventional warfare, this strategy aims to weaken enemy societies by blending into everyday life through infiltration, technology, information warfare, and media manipulation. The production of this political thriller was a risk in itself, said filmmakers. Director Yan Ma faced intense pressure from CCP authorities: He was harassed by agents, a relative's income was cut off, and one actor dropped out just days before filming due to threats by CCP operatives in Canada. The film's original Canadian premiere was canceled just 24 hours before the scheduled screening, another move Ma attributes to external interference. 'Making this film took not just talent and hard work, but courage. As a Chinese Canadian filmmaker, I've seen firsthand the risks involved in telling stories like this,' Ma told The Epoch Times. 'Our team never backed down, because we knew it was a story that demanded to be told. This film doesn't offer all the answers, but it opens a window to a reality we can't afford to ignore.' The film, banned in China, is being released exclusively on GJW+, a platform dedicated to spotlighting human rights, traditional values, and honest storytelling. And when it comes to gift-giving, the couple has their roles down. 'I'm great if you're ballin' on a budget,' Union joked. Wade, on the other hand, claims range. 'I play in both fields: high fashion and accessible elegance. And I listen. That's the key to good gifts.'
