Drive-by shooting mars #SilencingTheGuns pledge
The Nyanga subdistrict community police board — comprising Nyanga, Elsies River, Bishop Lavis, Gugulethu, Manenberg, Philippi East, Samora Machel, Delft and Ravensmead policing precincts — signed the 'Silencing The Gun' pledge in Manenberg.
The 30-year-old woman's covered body lay on the pavement in the rain outside a row of houses on 5th Street in Heideveld. Provincial police spokesperson Lt-Col Malcolm Pojie said she was shot at 11:15am.
The street was deserted when TimesLIVE visited the scene. Two police vans blocked the road, which was cordoned off with yellow tape.
Pojie said the woman was 'shot and fatally wounded during a drive-by shooting'. Manenberg police are investigating the murder.
'The circumstances and motive form part of the continued investigation. The suspects are yet to be identified and apprehended,' said Pojie.

State witness in Joshlin Smith case granted prosecutorial immunity
The Western Cape high court on Wednesday granted full indemnity from prosecution to Lourentia 'Renz' Lombaard, the former accused who turned state witness in the Joshlin Smith case. This comes as the convicted trio, Kelly 'Racquel' Smith, Jacquen 'Boeta' Appollis and Steveno van Rhyn, were denied leave to appeal their sentences and convictions, with the judge saying he doesn't believe any other court would come to a different conclusion. Judge Nathan Charles Erasmus ruled that Lombaard could not be prosecuted for the kidnapping of the six-year-old girl, noting that while she was aware of the arrangements and kept quiet, she played no role in the actual abduction. 'You may not be prosecuted for this offence,' Erasmus said. The decision was made after considering her testimony and the legal provisions under Section 204 of the Criminal Procedure Act. State prosecutor Zelda Swanepoel told the court that Lombaard had made 'huge personal sacrifices' by leaving her home and children to enter witness protection and face intense cross-examination. 'The court must understand the nerve, a witness box is not an easy place to be in. The cross-examination was intense,' Swanepoel said. Lombaard's evidence was key in revealing that Joshlin had been sold to a sangoma for R20,000, a revelation that helped secure the convictions. Advocate Eben van Tonder, acting for Lombaard, said she had 'much to lose' and that this in itself incentivised her to be truthful. Defence lawyers for the three convicts continued to challenge the fairness of the trial, accusing the state of procedural violations, unlawful detention and withholding of information. Advocate Nobahle Mkabayi, representing Van Rhyn, claimed her client's confession was extracted under duress and that they had appeared in court 'bare-handed and clueless'. Advocate Fanie Harmse, for Appollis, argued that another suspect, Phumza 'Maka Lima' Sigaqa, was never charged despite evidence suggesting Joshlin may have been taken to her home. He also pointed out that Appollis had injuries when arrested, saying that his injuries cannot be wished away. The hearing was marked by tense exchanges between the judge and the defence, with Mkabayi accusing Erasmus of creating a hostile environment that denied her client the right to be heard. Police crack 2023 ritual murder after healer allegedly found in possession of the deceased's organs
A traditional healer is expected to appear in the Garankuwa magistrate's court on Monday in connection with the 2023 murder of 20-year-old Gontse Makhubela. The 38-year-old man from Mozambique was arrested in Winterveldt on Thursday after he was allegedly found in possession of Makhubela's organs. Her mutilated, partly burnt and badly decomposed body was found at a refuse dumping site in Elandskraal, Brits, on November 23 2023. He is the third suspect to be arrested in the case after the earlier arrests of two other men. Samuel Mlambo, 38, and Serame Moroke, 29, were arrested last Wednesday. Their case was postponed to August 19 for a bail application after their appearance in court on Friday. In addition to murder, the duo are charged with kidnapping, violation and/or defiling of a corpse and contravention of the Immigration Act. According to police, Mlambo and Moroke were linked to the murder after officers recovered the deceased's phone. Police spokesperson Brig Sabata Mokgwabone said it is believed the victim was tricked by Moroke after Mlambo tasked him to find a young woman fitting a particular profile to be murdered so Mlambo could have her organs for muti. He had allegedly consulted the traditional healer. Mokgwabone said investigations are continuing, with the possibility of more arrests. TimesLIVE
