Share of clean energy in India's electricity less than 30% despite 50% of installed capacity

The Hindu7 days ago
India may have achieved an important milestone of sourcing 50% of its electric power capacity, or about 484 gigawatts, from non fossil-fuel sources, though publicly available data show that the share of clean energy in the electricity actually supplied is below 30%.
'India has achieved a landmark in its energy transition journey by reaching 50% of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources — five years ahead of the target set under its Nationally Determined Contributions [NDCs] to the Paris Agreement,' Pralhad Joshi, Minister for New and Renewable Energy, said earlier this week. 'This significant milestone underscores the country's steadfast commitment to climate action and sustainable development, and signals that India's clean energy transition is not only real but also accelerating under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.'
In 2014, the share of renewable energy sources – solar, wind, biomass, hydropower (small and large) and nuclear power – constituted about 30% of India's installed electricity capacity. As on June 30, 2025 – as per the Centre – it rose to 50%. However, the share of electricity generated from these sources rose from 17% in 2014-15 to 28% in the May 2025-26 period.
To be sure, the quantum of clean energy (non-fossil) produced annually has risen quite significantly from 190 billion units in 2014-15 to 460 billion units in 2024-25.
Experts say that despite the rise in clean energy, the slower increase in utilising clean energy was due to the 'capacity utilisation factor' (CUF), a measure of how much available energy was usable. CUF values for clean energy have been lower than that of coal or nuclear sources. 'While solar and wind now make up a large share of installed capacity, their CUFs are much lower. Solar has CUF of approximately 20% and wind around 25-30%, compared to coal's 60% or nuclear's 80%. This means their contribution to actual generation remains limited despite high installed capacity,' said Arunendra kumar Tiwari, Fellow, The Energy Resources Institute.
Base load demand, or power that is available through the day, is largely provided by coal, which makes up about 75% of India's energy mix. While there was a rise in solar energy utilisation and easing demand on coal during the daytime, particularly in summer, was unavailable in the evening.
'To improve utilisation of solar, we primarily need two things: flexibility in the grid and improved battery storage. Right now we pay the same (per unit) for electricity, whether night or day. Much like in the early days of telecom, when night calls were cheaper, we need to experiment with differential tarrifs for electricity during the day.
This however will require smart grids and better management,' said Saurabh Kumar, vice-president, Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet and an expert on energy, 'We have several schemes that are being working on and in the next one or two years, I expect there will be significant improvement.'
In the days ahead, an increase in 'hybrid' power projects that combine solar, wind, hydro and storage elements to meet India's growing peak and round-the-clock power needs are the way forward, says a policy note from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis. 'When paired with battery storage, these hybrids can store surplus energy and release it during peak demand hours, particularly in the evening. However, deployment is currently limited by challenges such as land-aggregation issues, lack of coordinated transmission planning, and high cost of storage components.'

Current agri loans over ₹28 lakh crore, but no waiver plan: Govt

The Centre has informed that agricultural loans worth over ₹ 28.5 lakh crore are outstanding but ruled out any plans for a waiver, minister of state in the ministry of finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in response to a question in Lok Sabha on Monday. Responding to Parliamentary questions by Lok Sabha MPs Supriya Sule (Nationalist Congress Party – Sharadchandra Pawar, Maharashtra), Hanuman Beniwal (Rashtriya Loktantrik Party, Rajasthan) and others, the Ministry of Finance informed Monday that outstanding agricultural loans stood at ₹ 28,50,779.43 crore as of March 31, 2025. These are due from 1,762.96 lakh accounts. 'No proposal to waive off the outstanding agricultural loans, is under consideration with Union Government,' the government said. Meanwhile, it is important to note that farmer loans are different from other categories of lending such as personal loans but lately the stance of cooperative banks to insist on credit score for approval of loans has rattled farmers no end. Read this Livemint for details on this. However, it added that several measures have been taken 'to provide relief and to improve the economic conditions of the farmers which inter-alia includes timely and adequate credit through Kisan Credit Card (KCC) under which crop loan up to ₹ 3 lakh is provided at subsidized interest rates under the Modified Interest Subvention Scheme (MISS) with additional incentives for timely repayment, fixation of progressively increased agricultural credit target, issuance of revised Priority Sector Lending guidelines to ensure improved credit flow to the agricultural sector etc.' The top five states in terms of outstanding agricultural loans are Tamil Nadu: ₹ 4,03,367 crore; Andhra Pradesh: ₹ 3,08,716 crore; Maharashtra: ₹ 2,60,799 crore; Uttar Pradesh: ₹ 2,28,560 crore; Karnataka: ₹ 2,22,301 crore. State Loans ( ₹ crore) Rajasthan 1,87,322 MP 1,62,385 Kerala 1,52,198 Telangana 1,44,346 Gujarat 1,44,330 Punjab 1,04,353 (Source: Other states with dues in excess of ₹ 1 lakh crore are Rajasthan: ₹ 1,87,322 crore; Madhya Pradesh: ₹ 1,62,385 crore; Kerala: ₹ 1,52,198 crore; Telangana: ₹ 1,44,346 crore; Gujarat: ₹ 1,44,330 crore; Punjab: ₹ 1,04,353 crore. Apart from Sule and Beniwal, the questions were put up by NCP-SP MPs from Maharashtra: Bhaskar Murlidhar Bhagare, Nilesh Dnyandev Lanke, Mohite Patil Dhairyasheel Rajsinh, Dr Amol Ramsing Kolhe, and Bajrang Manohar Sonwane, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackrey) MP from Maharashtra Sanjay Dina Patil, and Congress MP, Prof Varsha Eknath Gaikwad, also from Maharashtra. The MPs had also asked 'whether there is any correlation found between outstanding agricultural loans and incidence of farmer suicides in states like Maharashtra and if so, the data available with the Government on such cases during the last five years.' The government said that the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) publication 'Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India' is available till the year 2022 but that it does not specify separate reasons for farmer suicides. The MPs had also asked 'whether any specific categories of farmers marginal, small, tenant, SC/ST are more burdened with outstanding loans and if so, the details thereof' to which the government said that 'NABARD All India Rural Financial Inclusion Survey (NAFIS) for the period of 2021-2022 indicates a generally positive relationship between landholding size and household indebtedness, with the proportion of indebted households increasing as land size increases, up to 1 hectare. Beyond this threshold, a marginal decline in the incidence of indebtedness is observed among households with larger landholdings.' Women in Andhra Pradesh will soon travel for free on buses. How much will it cost the exchequer?

The Chandrababu Naidu government's free bus scheme for women in Andhra Pradesh will cost the exchequer Rs 3,500 crore, officials have said. The scheme, which will be launched on August 15, is part of the Telugu Desam Party government's election 'Super Six' election guarantees, made ahead of the May 2024 election. Significantly, Telangana's Revanth Reddy scheme has also implemented a similar policy. Under the Naidu government's new bus scheme, 'Zero Fare Tickets', will be issued to all women travelling on state road transport corporation, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said. The ticket will include details such as the route travelled, the amount of money saved per trip through the free service, and the full 100 percent subsidy the government provides. Issuing Zero Fare Tickets would help women passengers clearly understand the benefit they are availing, the CM said. The CM also discussed financial aspects of the scheme in states with similar policies to understand how much it would cost, officials said, adding that the Naidu government is seeking more funds from the Centre while also exploring 'alternative revenue sources and reducing operational costs to become a profitable entity'. According to Minister for Transport, Youth Affairs and Sports Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy, approximately 25 lakh women — a majority of them who travel for work including farm labour and daily wagers — will benefit from the scheme. 'Providing cost-free transportation increases their mobility, they can travel farther, and explore new opportunities,' he said. While the finer details of the scheme are still being worked out, sources say that luxury and premium segment bus services are likely to be excluded. 'He directed officials to come up with an action plan on the possible revenue-generating methods and the necessary policy changes. Simultaneously, the chief minister instructed officials to purchase only AC electric buses in the future. He noted that converting existing buses to electric buses would reduce maintenance costs and recommended that the required electricity be produced in-house,' one official said, adding that the chief minister 'emphasised the need to study the establishment of charging stations in all RTC depots across the state'. The Andhra Pradesh RTC has a fleet of about 11,000 buses, of which over 70 per cent are non-AC regular buses. According to estimates, the scheme will cost over Rs 200 crore/month. The scheme implemented by the neighbouring Telangana is estimated to cost the exchequer Rs 3,000 crore. In Telangana, the scheme is applicable to women, children, and transgender people. This comes at a time when the Naidu government is pushing for securing more funds for various schemes and key developmental projects in the state. Apart from the bus scheme, the TDP's `Super Six' guarantees promised three free LPG cylinders to eligible beneficiaries; Rs 3,000/month in unemployment allowance and Rs 15,000 for each school child; Rs 20,000 to farmers, and increasing social security pensions for people with disabilities.

Allahabad HC Seeks State's Reply On Objections To Bankey Bihari Temple Trust Ordinance

Last Updated: The objections were raised by amicus curiae Sanjay Goswami in a matter filed under Article 227 concerning the temple's administration The Allahabad High Court on Monday took on record serious objections raised against the Uttar Pradesh government's move to constitute a trust for the management of the Shri Bankey Bihari Ji Temple in Mathura, and directed the State to respond. The objections were raised by amicus curiae Sanjay Goswami in a matter filed under Article 227 concerning the temple's administration. The court was hearing a petition filed by Pranav Goswami and others. Goswami challenged the constitutional validity of The Uttar Pradesh Shri Bankey Bihari Ji Temple Trust Ordinance, 2025, particularly objecting to provisions that allow the inclusion of several government officials as ex-officio trustees. These include the District Magistrate, SSP Mathura, Municipal Commissioner, officials of the Dharmarth Karya Vibhag and the Braj Teerth Vikas Parishad. He argued that the temple is a privately managed religious institution traditionally overseen by the successors of Swami Haridas Ji, and that the ordinance attempts to give the State administrative control over it through indirect means. The move, he said, amounted to a 'backdoor entry" by the State into religious affairs. According to the amicus, while the government may regulate crowd management and ensure public safety, it cannot take over internal administration or interfere with religious practices of a temple that is not State-controlled. He also cautioned that such an ordinance, if not examined, may set a precedent for similar government actions across the State. 'The Constitution forbids such type of venture by the State Government encroaching upon the area of religion," he submitted, while referring to existing examples of temple control by State governments in other regions like Tamil Nadu. The High Court observed that the matter required further consideration and directed the Uttar Pradesh government to respond to the objections raised. The case has been listed for further hearing on July 30. It was also noted that a related matter is scheduled to be heard before the Supreme Court on July 29. The case is being heard by Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
