Netflix admits it used AI to make ‘amazing' scene in hit TV show – but did YOU spot it?

NETFLIX has admitted to using generative AI to create visual effects in a new original TV show - are you able to spot it?
The streaming giant confirmed the move in its latest earnings call, with co-CEO Ted Sarandos saying they traded in traditional VFX for generative AI in one scene.

Doing so was not only faster, but much cheaper than outsourcing the shot to a traditional VFX house, Engadget first reported.
Creators of the sci-fi Netflix original, The Eternaut, wanted a collapsing building sequence to anchor a key moment in the story.
But to detail such a scene would have required VFX that was apparently out of budget for the Argentine post-apocalyptic drama.
"Using AI-powered tools, they were able to achieve an amazing result with remarkable speed," Sarandos said.
"In fact, that VFX sequence was completed 10 times faster than it could have been completed with... traditional VFX tools and workflows."
Sarandos added that the shot "just wouldn't have been feasible for a show on that budget."
Generative AI, or Gen AI, is a type of artificial intelligence that can create text, images, music, and videos from prompts given to it by humans.
This content can be in all kinds of style - cartoonish, or even hyper-realistic, and therefore difficult to distinguish from real life.
Netflix has reportedly got plans to roll out AI-generated adverts for ad-tier subscribers in 2026.
The company is also testing a new search feature powered by OpenAI models, according to Bloomberg.
Hugely popular Netflix show is ENDING after seven years – leaving fans devastated
But The Eternaut marks a milestone, becoming "the very first Gen AI final footage to appear on screen in a Netflix original series or film," Sarandos said.
The shift towards generative AI is already happening within Hollywood.
Films like 10-time Oscar nominee The Brutalist and Late Night with the Devil faced backlash for even light AI involvement.
The issue is already on the radar of SAG-AFTRA, a union whose members went on strike against AI use in video games last summer.
"The video game industry generates billions of dollars in profit annually. The driving force behind that success is the creative people who design and create those games," SAG-AFTRA president, Fran Drescher, said at the time.
"That includes the SAG-AFTRA members who bring memorable and beloved game characters to life, and they deserve and demand the same fundamental protections as performers in film, television, streaming and music: fair compensation and the right of informed consent for the AI use of their faces, voices and bodies."

Erik Menendez hospitalised with 'serious' condition before hearing for release

Erik Menendez has reportedly been diagnosed with a 'serious' health condition and hospitalised just weeks before a parole hearing he and his brother have long awaited. The 54-year-old – who along with his brother Lyle, 57, has spent decades in prison for murdering their parents in 1989 – is so ill that his lawyer is urging California's governor to release him right away. 'It's a serious condition,' Mark Geragos told TMZ. 'I just think he should be parole furloughed, I think is the proper term, and he could be medically furloughed in advance of the hearing so that he can work with the parole attorney and get up to speed and be ready and do it and give it his best shot. In an update on Tuesday afternoon, TMZ reported that Erik is being treated for kidney stones. Geragos said his client's condition is so serious that Governor Gavin Newsom should release him before the parole hearing scheduled for August 21 and 22. Though Erik is receiving medical treatment in prison, he presumably would benefit from seeing a specialist outside the confines of the Richard J Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego. The siblings were sentenced to life in prison without parole for shooting dead their parents, José and Kitty Menendez, inside their Beverly Hills home. Erik and Lyle, then 18 and 21 years old, claimed that their father, who was RCA Records' chief operating officer, sexually abused them and that their former pageant queen mum turned a blind eye to that. The brothers have argued that their dad threatened to kill them if they told anyone, and that they acted in self-defence. But prosecutors said the brothers murdered their parents out of greed and pointed to their lavish spending after the killings. On May 13, the brothers were resentenced to 50 years to life in prison, which made them eligible for parole. The final decision on if the Menendez brothers are suitable for parole lies with Newsom. On Sunday, the Democratic governor spoke about the case with Ryan Murphy, who created the Netflix series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. More Trending The governor said he has not watched the Netflix show in order to avoid it influencing his decision on whether the brothers should be freed. 'I'm going to see if I made the right decision,' Newsom said with a laugh. 'Like, 'Jesus, I should've watched this before.'' Newsom could also seek to grant the brothers clemency, but has said he will hold off until their last parole board hearing to make that decision. Reputation review – front and swagger in brawling portrait of British male rage

Squint and you can picture the two leads of this film playing the Gallagher brothers circa the big Oasis bust-up of 2009 – all front and swagger, eyebrows set into aggrieved furrows. Instead, in this small-time British crime drama, James Nelson-Joyce and Kyle Rowe play old mates dealing drugs in the fictional northern town where they grew up. It's a brawling tale about a man who feels trapped by toxic masculinity, though in the end the film too backs itself into a bit of a dead end of macho violence. Nelson-Joyce is Wes, who has been questioning his life and choices since his best mate Tommy (Rowe) went to prison. Wes and his girlfriend Zoe (Olivia Frances Brown) have just had a baby, and there's even talk of a job. Then Tommy is released, a repugnant bully unwilling to let Wes go. Rowe's ferocious performance feels horribly real, like an angry dysregulated little boy with a need to break anything he can't have. Tommy's rage gives the film some nauseating moments; perhaps even harder to stomach is the casual misogyny in Wes's circle. Reputation is a grim portrait of male rage, though it doesn't seem particularly interested in the reasons behind it. There is a real sense of place though, in rows of narrow terraced houses backing on to wide open expanses of countryside. And for a film put together on what looks like a minuscule budget, it gets a considerable amount done. There's a promising plotline about one of Wes and Tommy's customers, the mother of a murdered 10-year-old boy, as well as little flickers here and there of another life open to Wes. But in the end it all builds to a big grandiose violent ending, which is a bit of a shame. ● Reputation is on digital platforms from 28 July.

Brittany Cartwright throws savage slight at Jax Taylor about his manhood in teaser for The Valley reunion

Their tumultuous relationship has been laid bare for all to see. Now Brittany Cartwright and Jax Taylor are coming face to face again as they revisit season two of The Valley - and things get ugly. Jax has since announced he is 'stepping away' from the upcoming third season, and perhaps that is for the best considering just how tense the conversation got in a sneak peek for the upcoming reunion. 'I would not touch that dirty d**k with a 10 inch pole,' Brittany insists. But Jax fired back with a response that made host Andy Cohen grimace: 'That's not what you said four months ago.' 'You knew we were filming whenever we did these things!' Brittany insisted. 'I'm not going to play a role, I'm not an actor!' Jax hit back. 'You dug right at me constantly. You made me literally lose my sparkle!' Brittany hissed. An exasperated Jax replied: 'Not with the f**king sparkle.' Jax and Brittany aren't the only couple whose relationship has disintegrated on The Valley - so have Jesse Lally and Michelle Lally. Their issues boiled to the surface during the reunion, with Jesse slamming his ex for allegedly seeking relationship advice from a single man during their marriage. 'C'mon! A married woman with a child asking a single guy for advice about her husband? That's wildly inappropriate!' Jesse shot at his ex. 'Wildly inappropriate? You told our client that you wanted to eat her out!' Michelle claimed. Last season, Brittany and Jax's marriage officially ended on camera. The former couple were married in 2019 following a dramatic romance that began on Vanderpump Rules. They have son Cruz, four, together. Fortunately for Brittany, she won't be having to encounter Jax much longer on their show - he recently announced he will be 'stepping away' from season three. He dropped the bombshell about his departure in a statement to US Weekly, saying, 'After an incredibly challenging year and many honest conversations with my team and producers, I'll be stepping away from the next season.' 'Right now, my focus needs to be on my sobriety, my mental health, and coparenting. Taking this time is necessary for me to become the best version of myself — especially for our son, Cruz,' he added. On last week's episode of The Valley, Cartwright accused her ex of drinking just days after he got out of rehab following a month-long stint in the facility. A source close to production told that Jax and Bravo had 'mutual discussions' and the network 'respects and supports his decision.' During the most recent episode, Taylor visited Cartwright at her rental property for a discussion about establishing 'boundaries' while co-parenting their son Cruz. However, their cordial sit-down quickly turned hostile as the estranged couple got into a shouting match. Amid their custody battle, which has quickly turned bitter, Cartwright admitted she was having doubts about his sobriety in a confessional. Taylor stunned viewers with a horrific insult directed at his estranged wife when he made a blunt confession about their crumbling marriage. 'I think after Jax got out of the facility, it took him less than five days to go back to the bars and start partying again,' Cartwright claimed. 'It's just so disappointing, like, he did not take anything seriously,' she added.
