Bruised Alex Marquez sets course to top Jerez practise times
de la Frontera Alex Marquez climbed back on his bike yesterday to set a Jerez course record in a flag and fall filled final practice session for the Grand Prix of Spain.
The younger Marquez brother set a time of 1min 35.991sec on a Ducati Gresini, 0.103sec ahead of Italy's Francesco Bagnaia on a factory Ducati and 0.036 inside the course record the Italian set last year.
Italian Franco Morbidelli was third on a VR46 Ducati. Championship leader Marc Marquez was fourth on a factory Ducati.
Frenchman Fabio Quartararo, displaying the rediscovered competitiveness of his Yamaha, was fifth and the top non-Ducati.
The session had been halted after nine minutes when Alex Marquez slid out as high speed on turn five. His bike rocketed across the gravel and through an air fence, forcing stewards to wave red flags while the barrier was repaired. After picking himself up, Marquez was ferried back on a scooter nursing his right hand.
Alex Marquez had also crashed in the morning session but still set the fastest time. He repeated the trick in the afternoon.
He returned for the final minutes of the session and quickly jumped to third before catapulting to a new record, as stewards repeatedly waved yellow warning flags.
Quartararo, Jack Miller, Ai Ogura, Raul Fernandez and Joan Mir, were among riders who crashed during the session.
Fermin Aldeguer, on the second Gresini bike, Johann Zarco on a Honda, KTM's Pedro Acosta, Fabio Di Giannantonio on a VR46 and Joan Mir on a Honda completed the top 10 who advance directly to the 12-rider final qualifying session on Saturday.
That will determine the first four rows of the grid for the evening's 12-lap sprint and Sunday's 25-lap main race.
The other 13 riders must ride in an earlier session with two places in Q2 at stake.
Marc Marquez, the sixtime world champion, has dominated so far this season, taking all four poles, all four sprints and only missing out on a sweep when he fell while leading the Grand Prix of the Americas in Texas last month.
He appeared to complete the afternoon session on one set of tyres, conserving his options for later in the weekend.

Alcaraz claims Cincinnati title
Carlos Alcaraz won the ATP Cincinnati Open title on Monday after defending champion Jannik Sinner retired due to illness in the first set. Sinner lasted for just 22 minutes, calling for the doctor after losing the fifth game and shortly after going to shake hands with Alcaraz. Alcaraz eyes New York It was the second match in a row Alcaraz had won over an ailing opponent, following his win over Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals. Alcaraz won his 22nd career title as he claimed his 17th victory in a row at the Masters 1000 level. He now leads Sinner 9-5 and lost to the Italian in their last match, the Wimbledon final last month. 'Obviously it's not the way that I wanted to win the final,' the Spaniard said. 'First of all, I just want to wish Jan - nik a speedy recovery. Hopefully in a few days he's going to be okay to prepare and practice well to the US Open. 'For myself, I'm just really, really happy to be able to leave the with trophy, since I just lost that final in 2023 (to Novak Djokovic) I just wanted really, really badly this, this trophy, so I just really proud and happy to be able to lift it.' Former Open winner Alcaraz, who was upset in the second round a year ago, is looking forward to a more respectable showing in New York. 'I'm feeling a lot of confidence. New York is a place that I love is where I got my first Grand Slam. 'I appreciate the love and the support that I received there every every year... last year it was disappointing, the level that I played there. 'So this year, I really want to show my really good tennis, my best tennis, try to go as far as I can, enjoy as much as I can.'

Atletico beaten by Espanyol in La Liga opener
AFP | Madrid Espanyol staged a late comeback to grab a shock 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid on Sunday as Diego Simeone's men made a disappointing start to their La Liga campaign. Pere Milla scored a late winner as Atletico stumbled to defeat in Barcelona despite leading through Julian Alvarez's brilliant goal. PSG get Ligue 1 title defence off to winning start
AFP | Paris Paris Saint-Germain got their defence of the Ligue 1 title off to a winning start on Sunday as Vitinha's deflected strike proved enough to earn the European champions a 1-0 victory away to Nantes. The Portuguese midfielder's effort midway through the second half beat goalkeeper Anthony Lopes with the aid of a wicked deflection off Nantes defender Chidozie Awaziem to break the deadlock. PSG were made to work hard for their victory as coach Luis Enrique made seven changes to his starting line-up following the UEFA Super Cup win on penalties against Tottenham Hotspur in midweek. That was the first game of the new campaign for last season's Champions League winners, who only began pre-season training on August 6 having gone all the way to the Club World Cup final in the United States in mid-July. They did not play any friendly matches prior to that and are therefore likely to require several weeks before getting close to the level at which they performed last season. However, they still had enough against a hard-working but punchless Nantes side, playing a first competitive match under new Portuguese coach Luis Castro. 'I am very happy because the first objective in these matches is the victory and I think we deserved the three points,' Luis Enrique said. 'We were in control throughout, playing away from home. In the first half we didn't create much but that is normal because it is difficult against a team defending so deep.' Asked about his team's lack of preparation for the start of the new season, the Spanish coach added: 'Today we saw that our players are ready and wanted to show the level they can perform at.
