PM Modi calls Trinidad and Tobago PM ‘Bihar ki beti', says ‘our bonds go well beyond geography'
He expressed his honour in presenting a replica of the Ram Mandir and sacred water from the Sarayu River in Ayodhya, acknowledging the community's earlier gesture of sending stones and holy water for the temple's construction.
1. Addressing the event, PM Modi said, 'I am aware of your deep faith in Prabhu Shri Ram... Ram Leelas here are truly unique... Ramcharitmanas says that the Holy City of Prabhu Shri Ram is so beautiful that its glory is praised across the world. I am sure that all of you welcomed the return of Ram Lalla to Ayodhya after 500 years... You had sent Holy water and 'Shila' for building the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. I have also brought something here with a similar sense of devotion. It is my honour to bring a replica of Ram Mandir and some water from the Holy Sarayu…'
2. He also reflected on his previous visit to Trinidad and Tobago more than two decades ago. 'When I last visited 25 years ago... between then and now, our friendship has grown even stronger. Banaras, Patna, Kolkata, and Delhi may be cities in India, but there are also names of streets here. Navaratra, Mahashivratri, and Janmashtami are celebrated here with joy, spirit and pride. Chautal and Bhaitak gana continue to thrive here. I can see the warmth of many familiar faces here. I see curiosity in the bright eyes of the younger generation, keen to know and grow together. Our bonds go well beyond geography and generations…'
3. Praising the Indian community in Trinidad and Tobago, he said, 'They left Ganga and Yamuna behind but carried Ramayana in their heart. They left their soil but not their soul. They were not just migrants, they were messengers of a timeless civilisation. Their contribution has benefited this country culturally, economically and spiritually.'
4. He added, 'The journey of the Indian community in Trinidad and Tobago is about courage. The circumstances your ancestors faced could have broken even the strongest of spirits. But they faced hardships with hope. They met problems with persistence.'
5. Calling the Indian diaspora 'our pride,' PM Modi said, "As I have often said, each one of you is a Rashtradoot, an Ambassador of India's values, culture and heritage."
6. Referring to Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar's ancestral ties, PM Modi said, "Prime Minister Kamala ji's ancestors lived in Buxar, Bihar. Kamala ji herself has visited there. People consider her a 'Bihar ki Beti' (daughter of Bihar). Many people present here have ancestors who came from Bihar itself. Bihar's heritage is a matter of pride not only for India but for the entire world. Be it democracy, politics, diplomacy, or higher education, centuries ago, Bihar showed the world new directions in many such fields. I am confident that even for the 21st-century world, new inspirations and opportunities will emerge from the land of Bihar."
7. Welcoming PM Modi, Persad-Bissessar said, 'We are graced by a leader whose visit is not just a matter of protocol but a profound honour for us and so I'm deeply privileged to welcome one of the world's most respected, most admired visionary leader, the honourable Narendra Modi ji, Prime Minister of Republic of India.'
8. She praised his leadership and described him as a major force in global politics. 'Your presence is a great inspiration for all of us, particularly to Indo-Trinidadian community whose roots are planted in the same blessed Indian soil from which you emerge. We honour the revered cultural bonds between our people. These bonds transcend time and distance, uniting us in a shared history and shared future. PM Modi you are a transformational force who has refined governance of India and positioned your country as a prominent and dominant global power,' she added.
9. Trinidad & Tobago PM Kamala Persad Bissessar said, 'Under your leadership, India has extended its hand to the world — never more so than through your compassion and benevolence with the Vaccine Initiative four years ago.'
10. 'You, sir, ensured that vaccines and supplies reach even the smallest nations, including Trinidad and Tobago. Through your benevolence, you brought hope and calm where there was fear. This was more than diplomacy; this was an act of kinship, an act of shared humanity and an act of love. This is one of the many reasons that we are deeply proud to bestow upon you The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, our nation's highest honour,' said Bissessar.
Bihar's heritage is a matter of pride not only for India but for the entire world.
This is PM Modi's first visit to Trinidad and Tobago as Prime Minister and the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Caribbean nation since 1999. The visit is taking place at the invitation of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

Trinidad & Tobago extends full support to India for UNSC permanent membership
India and Trinidad and Tobago have inked six agreements to boost cooperation in several sectors, including infrastructure and pharmaceuticals, following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his counterpart from the Caribbean nation, Kamla Persad-Bissessar. In the meeting held on Friday, Prime Minister Modi announced a decision by India to issue Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards up to the sixth generation of the Indian diaspora of Trinidad and Tobago, where over 40 per cent of the population is of Indian origin. It is the first bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister to this Caribbean island nation since 1999. In their talks, Modi and Bissessar also explored potential collaboration in areas of defence, agriculture, healthcare and digital transformation, unified payments interface (UPI) and capacity building. Significantly, Trinidad and Tobago reaffirmed its full support to India for a permanent membership of an expanded United Nations Security Council, according to a joint statement released on Saturday. The six MoUs will provide for deeper cooperation between India and Trinidad and Tobago in the fields of pharmacopoeia, quick-impact projects, culture, sports and diplomatic training, among others. The pact on sports is aimed at fostering training, talent exchange, infrastructure development, and joint capacity building. PM Modi also reiterated his offer to train aspiring young women cricketers from Trinidad and Tobago in India. Delving into pressing global issues, Modi and Bissessar reaffirmed the need for comprehensive reforms in the United Nations, including expansion of the UN Security Council, to better reflect current realities. 'While recognising the rising geopolitical tensions and global conflicts, both leaders called for dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward,' the joint statement said. It was also agreed that India would support Trinidad and Tobago's candidature for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the period 2027-28, and the island nation would support New Delhi's bid for the period 2028-29. 'The landmark visit of the prime minister to Trinidad and Tobago has given a boost to the special ties between the countries,' the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. In her remarks during the delegation-level talks, Bissesar noted that PM Modi's 'landmark visit' to Trinidad and Tobago will reinvigorate the deep-rooted bilateral ties between the two countries. On his part, PM Modi expressed appreciation for Trinidad and Tobago's strong support and solidarity to the people of India in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack. 'The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fight terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,' the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. PM Modi also met Christine Carla Kangaloo, the president of Trinidad and Tobago. In a social media post, Modi said a new momentum was added to the friendship between India and Trinidad and Tobago. 'Thank you, Trinidad & Tobago. The moments here will never be forgotten. We've added new momentum to the India-Trinidad & Tobago friendship. My gratitude to President Christine Carla Kangaloo, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the government and people of this wonderful nation,' he said. Several announcements to foster bilateral ties, including the offer of an OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) card to the sixth generation of the people of Indian origin in the Caribbean nation, were made. The MEA said Modi and Bissesar agreed to work together for greater solidarity among the countries of the Global South and to strengthen India-CARICOM partnership. The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is an intergovernmental organisation of 15 member states in the Caribbean region, having the primary objective to promote economic integration and cooperation among the members. 'Both leaders also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. They called upon greater cooperation to deal with contemporary challenges such as climate change, disaster management, and cybersecurity,' the MEA said. On PM Modi's meeting with President Kangaloo, the MEA said it was marked by warmth and a reaffirmation of the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations. 'The prime minister congratulated President Kangaloo on receiving the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award this year and expressed deep appreciation for her distinguished public service,' it said. 'The two leaders reflected on the enduring bonds shared by the two countries, anchored by strong people-to-people ties,' it added. The MEA said PM Modi invited Bissessar to visit India, which she accepted. Earlier on Friday, PM Modi addressed the parliament of the Caribbean nation and spoke about the cricket connection between the two countries. 'There is a natural warmth in the connection between our two countries. I must say, Indians are among the most passionate fans of the West Indies cricket team! We cheer for them with all our heart, except when they are playing against India,' he said. Modi also lauded the contribution of Indian-origin people to Trinidad and Tobago's development journey. 'From politics to poetry, cricket to commerce, calypso to chutney, they contribute to every field. They are an integral part of the vibrant diversity that you all respect.' 'Together, you have built a nation that lives its motto: 'Together we aspire, together we achieve',' Modi said.

Representative image (Picture credit: AP) As Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarks on his visit to Brazil for the 17th Brics Summit, Indian business leaders and the Brics Business Council are pushing for deeper economic integration and seamless trade within the bloc. Onkar Kanwar, chairman of the Brics Business Council, underlined that the grouping's central aim is to remove trade barriers, strengthen multilateralism, and promote local currency trade among members. 'We are trying to remove all the trade barriers… We can exchange businesses within our own countries, let's say from Russia to India. We can use local currencies… and that will go a long way,' Kanwar said on the sidelines of the summit, as quoted by news agency ANI. He praised India's leadership in championing inclusive digital transformation and called for sharing India's successful digital platforms across Brics nations. India's rapid digitalisation, according to Kanwar, is a model for emerging economies. 'Even if you've got the smallest person… if you go to any shop, he will have that digital platform. We should share that with other countries,' he noted, adding that Digital India's success could guide tech-led development across the bloc, as per ANI. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The Brics Business Council's recent meetings have reportedly focused on youth employment, digital collaboration, and industrial cooperation.
