Proton kicks off 2H2025 with second-best monthly sales of the year
PROTON Holdings Bhd posted its second-best monthly sales performance in 2025 in July, as the Malaysian automotive market rebounded from a slow June. The national carmaker sold 13,518 units in July, up 22.1% month-on-month, bringing year-to-date (YTD) sales to 85,674 units and maintaining its position as the second-best-selling brand nationwide. This gave Proton a 19.2% market share for the month, and a YTD share of 19.3% — up from 18.7% in 2024. The surge was supported by the launch of the all-new Proton X50 on July 24, which sold 2,068 units in July despite having only a week on the market. Proton projects total production of 5,000 units by end-August, with bookings nearing five digits. The Proton Saga also posted its best monthly sales of the year at 6,638 units, following its 40th anniversary celebrations in early July. Meanwhile, the Proton X70 registered 617 units, marking a 51.7% YTD sales growth despite heightened competition. Proton's export sales rose 44.1% YTD to 2,258 units, led by the X50, followed by the Saga and 7. The 7, Malaysia's top-selling EV, recorded YTD sales of 4,959 units, including 270 exports. 'The introduction of the all-new Proton X50 has given the entire range an attention boost and Proton intends to keep the upward momentum going with more new model introductions and a technology showcase at the Global Automotive and Technology Expo (GATE) 2025,' said Proton Edar deputy CEO Zhang Qiang. Zhang added that the 7's success 'proves the product and strategy are right for Malaysian EV buyers' and that the upcoming 5 will further grow the company's electric vehicle and export contributions. — TMR
