McKaigue remembers playing Division 4 football in 2019 but their revival raised the bar.
He said: 'Expectation is a wonderful thing and it's often created by a world outside the bubble itself.
'There has been a narrative created that Derry's senior footballers had the worst season ever last year.
"I can accurately remember many poorer years for Derry in the Championship but last year was sort of built up into this catastrophe of a year.

'It was more so we didn't meet expectations. I'm not saying that everyone follows that narrative, but I felt Mickey Harte last year got a lot of scrutiny that was a wee bit over the top at times.'
Still, the 2022 All-Star believes Tally can take them all the way for the first time since 1993.

He added: 'I still feel that Derry are a contender for Sam Maguire.
'Maybe not this year in the same capacity as last year but do I feel this Derry squad will have the potential to be a contender for Sam Maguire in the next number of years.
'Derry have a fair bit of talent and probably a nice enough age profile in that squad too that would suggest that they're still going to be knocking there or thereabouts the next number of years.
'I feel that the underage in Derry is really strong and you'll probably be yet to see a couple of the players that I'd be really excited about.
'From a Derry perspective, that's really pleasing because for a long number of years as we know, we weren't anywhere near that level.'

Diogo Jota's heartbroken family wipe away tears after tribute to late star

The wife and parents of tragic Diogo Jota were moved to tears at Molineux on Saturday evening as Wolves honoured their former star with a stunning tifo before their Premier League opener against Manchester City. The magnificent tribute in the south bank featured a colossal image of Jota celebrating a goal during his spell as a Wolves player - when he spearheaded their Championship triumph and promotion, followed by consecutive seventh-place Premier League campaigns. Adjacent to the tifo, a banner was displayed on the pitch bearing the message: "We'll remember you when you walk in fields of gold." Jota's wife, Rute Cardoso, attended the fixture alongside Ruben Neves, Jota's former Wolves and Portugal teammate and one of his dearest friends, who also served as a pallbearer at his funeral following his heartbreaking death last month. The parents of Jota and Andre Silva, who died alongside his brother in the car crash in Spain, were also in attendance for the match. Like Jota's wife, Isabel and Joaquim Silva were visibly emotional. When the clock reached the 18-minute mark during the encounter, fans throughout the stadium rose and applauded for 60 seconds in tribute to Jota, who wore the No. 18 jersey for Wolves during his time in the Black Country, reports the Mirror. Manchester City (Image: 2025 Getty Images) Jota transferred to Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, spending five years at Anfield, and Liverpool's Premier League curtain-raiser against Bournemouth on Friday also included numerous tributes to Jota. Liverpool boss Arne Slot confessed after the match that he desperately wished he could have turned to Jota from the bench whilst his team hunted for a winner. "Normally at 2-2 everyone knows which player I look to at that moment in time," Slot revealed. "I would have loved to bring in Diogo Jota, but I could not for terrible reasons. But tonight the fans and the players did what he did for us many times in the past." Wolves paid tribute to Diogo Jota (Image: 2025 Catherine Ivill - AMA) Match hero Federico Chiesa, who netted Liverpool's decisive strike to seal a 3-2 triumph, also honoured Jota during his post-match chat, declaring: "[The goal] was a great moment for me, but my thoughts go to Diogo. "I think for what we have seen it was his day. The feeling that the fans gave me, chanting his song all the way through the match. It was very emotional, very emotional for me. I have to say that after the goal my thoughts went to his family, his brother Andre. That's the only thing I could say. "At the end of the day we have to focus on the football. We wanted to win today. It was a difficult match, we went 2-0 up and then they came back, but we showed why we are champions. "Of course Diogo would have helped us a lot but unfortunately he was somewhere else and he helped us in another way."

Luke Dennison the hero as Drogheda beat Derry on penalties to advance in FAI Cup

Luke Dennison proved the hero for Drogheda in an emphatic penalty shootout victory over 10 man Derry City at Brandywell as the FAI Cup holders progressed to the quarter finals. The American goalkeeper saved twice from Jamie Stott and Danny Mullen while Adam Frizzell fired over the bar as the Boynesiders won 3-0 on penalties with Owen Lambe dispatching the winning spot kick. It's one win in the last six games in all competitions for Derry with Tiernan Lynch's first season in charge threatening to fizzle out. Six times winners Derry, who were out to avenge last year's FAI Cup final defeat to the Co. Louth men, found themselves behind after two minutes. Andrew Quinn, who scored the first goal in that 2-0 cup final victory at the Aviva Stadium last November, broke the deadlock for the Boynesiders after just two minutes. Swansea City loanee Josh Thomas did brilliantly to cut the ball back into the defender's path after a quickly worked free-kick and Quinn side footed it into the net at the near post. It was a disastrous start for Derry and it could've been a lot worse but for Brian Maher's heroics when producing a stunning save to deny Ryan Brennan's close range effort on the hour mark. Five minutes later Michael Duffy produced a moment of magic to send the game into extra-time with his ninth FAI Cup goal for his hometown club and his ninth of the season. Luke Dennison denied Ronan Boyce's point blank header with an instinctive save during stoppage time in the first half of extra-time. Derry skipper Mark Connolly had the ball in the back of the Drogheda net late on but referee Rob Harvery ruled his header out for a foul on Conor Keeley in the build-up. Ben Doherty was shown a straight red card in stoppage time at the end of extra time for dissent after Duffy felt he should've had a penalty kick. The match was to be decided on penalties and Dennison saved twice before Lambe fired home the winner emphatically to send the holders through.
