Justin Herbert to play in his first-ever preseason game as the Chargers face the Rams
Herbert will play one or two series in the game at SoFi Stadium, coach Jim Harbaugh said Thursday.
Entering his sixth season in the league, the 27-year-old quarterback has yet to throw a pass in a preseason game. When he was a rookie in 2020, the preseason was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. By 2021, Herbert was coming off a stellar rookie year and then-Chargers coach Brandon Staley didn't want to risk an injury during exhibition play. Staley maintained that approached in 2023, as did Harbaugh when he took over last season.
Trey Lance and Taylor Heinicke will play after Herbert. Lance threw for only 55 yards against the New Orleans Saints last weekend but he ran seven times for a team-high 48 yards, including a 5-yard TD run. Lance threw for two TDs in a win over the Detroit Lions in the Hall of Fame game.
Heinicke started against the Saints and was 1 of 5 for 8 yards.
Herbert and wide receiver Keenan Allen will be among the offensive starters who will play against the Rams. On defense, Khalil Mack and Derwin James Jr. won't play as Harbaugh indicated they don't need the reps.
'I know they're ready,' he said. 'I remember when K Mack got traded to the Bears and didn't practice at all and then pick-6 and a couple sacks. I know they're good and ready to go.'
The Chargers, who are 2-0 in the preseason, canceled their joint practice with the Rams on Wednesday, citing a rash of injuries, including the season-ending loss of Rashawn Slater.

This partnership between YouTube and the NFL marks the latest push by streamers to break into sports broadcasting. Last year, Netflix hosted its inaugural two-game NFL Christmas Gameday event, which saw the Chiefs take on the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens take on the Houston Texans. 'This broadcast is a landmark moment in our partnership with the NFL, where the worlds of football, music and creators will powerfully collide,' said Angela Courtin, VP of connected TV and creative studio marketing at YouTube, in a statement. Karol G is widely considered to be one of the most influential reggaeton and urban pop artists. In 2024, she made history as the first woman to win the Grammy for best música urbana, a moment that reflected changing perceptions of reggaetón and Latin hip-hop as exclusively 'men's music.' 'You know, I feel a lot of responsibility about that,' she told The Associated Press at the time. Brian Baldinger loved watching Willie Lampkin dominate the Cowboys: 'He destroyed them'
Baldinger had so much fun watching Lampkin serve up pancakes and 'destroy' the Cowboys Willie Lampkin put himself on the map as a promising young player last week in his preseason debut, standing out in the Los Angeles Rams' win over the Dallas Cowboys. He was the Rams' highest-graded player at PFF, dominating at center from the second he stepped on the field. NFL Network's Brian Baldinger highlighted Lampkin's performance on social media in one of his 'Baldy's Breakdowns' segments, raving about the way the rookie played in his debut. 'He just put the Cowboys in an octagon and he destroyed them all game long,' Baldinger said. 'He just takes the Cowboys and he just disses them the entire time. It didn't matter who was there. Like, pancakes are being served.' Part of the reason Lampkin generated so much buzz last week is that he's only 5-foot-10, 270 pounds – or at least that's what he weighed in at during the Senior Bowl. He's tiny by NFL standards, but he plays much bigger than that. He naturally has great leverage as a shorter player, similar to the way Aaron Donald did at defensive tackle. And with a wrestling background, he knows how to take guys to the ground and erase them from the play. 'It's one play after another,' Baldinger said. 'Give me Dana White right here because he's going to flat-back this rookie right here, he's got him on his back, then he's got the knee to the head. Is that legal in MMA? I'm not sure. Ask Dana.' Baldinger had a blast watching all the pancake blocks Lampkin had, planting defenders on their backs. 'It just kept going on and on and it was fun to watch. Down he goes. It's just a pancake and a finish. Throw some butter on it, whip it with syrup, serve it for breakfast, serve it for lunch, serve it for dinner. I'm not supposed to do this rookie lineman, but it was so much fun to watch, like, the Cowboys never want to see this guy again. He literally threw them all out of the octagon.' Lampkin is competing to make the Rams' 53-man roster as an undrafted rookie out of North Carolina. He still has work to do but he's off to a great start and looks like he could have the makings of a gem for Los Angeles.

Andre Johnson loses Hall of Fame ring to burglars
Current and former pro athletes continue to be targeted by thieves. Via Michael Shapiro of the Houston Chronicle, Hall of Fame receiver Andre Johnson recently was victimized by burglars. Among other things, his Hall of Fame ring was stolen. 'Andre Johnson is my brother,' rapper and Houston native Lil Keke said on Instagram. 'He's the first Houston Texan Hall of Famer. He dedicated his life here, his career here, and also he resides here as a Houstonian — that makes it much, much more important. Man, we family and this is a family message. Over the weekend somebody broke into my brother's home, took some items that represent his legacy, represent his dedication, his hard work, his family. We need to recover that and get that back.' The investigation is ongoing. Last year, a crime ring targeted multiple pro athletes, entering their residences when they were away for games. Eventually justice caught up with them. Whether justice catches up with those who stole Johnson's Hall of Fame ring remains to be seen. It would probably be better for police to get them first. If Johnson finds them, they may end up experiencing the Cortland Finnegan treatment.
