Top Gun: Maverick 2 Update: Tom Cruise To Return For 'One Last Ride', Confirms Director

Joseph Kosinski teased there was 'still more story to tell' about Cruise's character.
Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski has teased that the sequel will be 'much bigger" than the 2022 movie. The 51-year-old filmmaker is set to return for the upcoming action blockbuster in what will be the next instalment in the story of Tom Cruise's Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell, and Kosinski has now revealed the Top Gun: Maverick follow-up will see the titular fighter pilot in a 'really existential crisis".
Speaking with GQ, the F1 director said: 'I think we've found a way to do it, not only in the scale of what we're proposing, but the idea itself of the story we're telling. We're thinking much bigger than … It's a really existential crisis that Maverick has in this, and it's much bigger than himself. It actually … I'm trying to describe it without giving anything away. It's an existential question that Maverick has to deal with, that would make Maverick feel small, I think, as a movie, compared to what we're talking about."
By the end of Top Gun: Maverick, the naval captain passes the torch to the next generation of pilots like Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw (Miles Teller), Jake 'Hangman' Seresin (Glen Powell) and Robert 'Bob' Floyd (Lewis Pullman), though Kosinski teased there was 'still more story to tell" about Cruise's character.
The director said: 'Yeah, there's still more story to tell for him. There's one last ride. So we're working on it now. Ehren Kruger, who wrote F1, is writing the script. Like all things, it takes a while to work things out, and we'll only do it if we feel like we've got a strong enough story."
Top Gun: Maverick – which is the legacy sequel to 1986's Top Gun and also stars Jennifer Connelly and the late Val Kilmer – follows Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell (Cruise) as he trains the next generation of TOPGUN pilots while they prepare to carry out a dangerous mission.
Producer Christopher McQuarrie recently said the plot for the Top Gun: Maverick sequel was 'already in the bag".
During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning director said: 'It wasn't hard. I thought it would be, and that's a good place to go from is you walk into the room going, 'Come on, what are we going to do?' and Ehren Kruger pitched something, and I went, 'Mhm actually.' And we had one conversation about it and the framework is there. So, no, it's not hard to crack. The truth of the matter is, none of these are hard to crack."
While Top Gun: Maverick and its 1986 predecessor were praised for their outstanding action and impressive visuals, McQuarrie insisted 'emotion" was the key to making a successful film.
He explained: 'It's as you start to execute it, and as you start to interrogate it, as you start [to think] why these movies are made the way they are. It's not the action, it's not even the level of or intensity of or the scope and scale of the action [or] the engineering around the action, it's none of those things — it's the emotion."

Box Office: Superman crosses Jurassic World Rebirth domestically; Dinosaur film wins global contest with a USD 200 million margin

Superman and Jurassic World: Rebirth are among Summer 2025's biggest blockbusters globally. Both the movies have comfortably broken even theatrically and the big chunk of non-theatrical revenue, along with the recurring revenue through syndication shall act as their profit. The two movies engaged in a close battle at the domestic box office but Superman has finally taken the lead in its fourth week and that will remain constant till both movies end their run. Superman Wins The Domestic Battle Against An Able Rival Like Jurassic World: Rebirth The superhero movie released a week after Jurassic World: Rebirth, but it has still managed to go past the dinosaur movie, courtesy strong word of mouth. The total domestic collections of Superman have crossed USD 320 million at the time of this article, and the lifetime collections are likely to be in the USD 370 million range. On the other hand, Jurassic World: Rebirth is likely to end its run with collections of around USD 340 million. Jurassic World: Rebirth Takes The Global Win The story is different at the global box office as the Scarlett Johansson movie is comfortably ahead of the David Corenswet film. Jurassic World: Rebirth stands at slightly under USD 800 million, compared to the little under USD 600 million global gross of Superman. Both movies will add USD 60-80 million from here and this means that the difference between the two movies will be around USD 200 million, in favour of the Jurassic movie. Lilo And Stitch Is Summer 2025's Biggest Winner The biggest global summer hit of 2025 is Lilo And Stitch. The movie, despite mixed word of mouth, and a clash with Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, hit a billion dollars globally. This Disney movie's reception reiterates that audiences have not had enough of family-comedies yet. Key Takeaways From Summer 2025 There are a few key takeaways from Summer 2025. Asia is no longer the major contributor it once used to be for Hollywood films. Yes, old-school films like Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, F1 and Jurassic World: Rebirth are still getting the audiences but they are not operating at all time high levels or even close. Films like Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which are big blockbusters domestically, need to find a way to engage the international audiences just as much. Although not disappointing, the overseas reception of both these movies is not up to the mark.

India's PVR Inox loss more than halves as 'F1', other hits draw moviegoers

India's PVR Inox reported a sharply narrower quarterly loss on Wednesday as a strong box office slate, including Hollywood hit ' F1: The Movie ', drew more audiences to theatres and boosted ticket and food sales. India's largest multiplex operator, formed through the merger of PVR and Inox, reported a consolidated loss of 540 million rupees ($6.2 million) in the April-June quarter, compared with a loss of 1.79 billion rupees a year earlier. Analysts, on an average, had expected a loss of 659.1 million rupees. Footfalls in cinema halls have been pressured by weak urban consumption , an uneven slate of film releases and growing competition from streaming platforms . To bring audiences back, PVR has been offering discounted weekday tickets and relaunching older movie hits. These measures, along with the strong box office performance of Bollywood and Hollywood films such as 'Sitaare Zameen Par' and 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning' helped lift quarterly footfalls by 12% on-year. Average ticket prices rose 8% to 254 rupees, while per head spending on food and beverages increased 10% to a record 148 rupees. Executive Director Sanjeev Bijli told Reuters he expects spending in these segments to grow at a similar pace in the coming quarters. "I do see a visibility of great films all the way down to December, the end of third-quarter, and that's what's going to drive consumption for admissions, ticket prices, advertisement revenues and also F&B spends," Bijli said. He added that the company's new cinema halls will experiment with gaming centers, co-working spaces and cafeterias inside the premises to "enhance the stickiness of the consumer". Revenue from operations rose 23% to 14.69 billion rupees for the quarter, topping analysts' estimate of 14.24 billion rupees. The results come amid growing signs of recovery in urban consumption. Consumer goods firms such as Hindustan Unilever and Britannia are signalling improving urban demand after several quarters of sluggish growth.

THIS Actor Lost Titanic To Leonardo DiCaprio, But Still Charmed Kate Winslet

The actor refused to take James Cameron's direction during the audition. Matthew McConaughey is said to have lost the role of Jack Dawson in Titanic after refusing to take direction during his audition with director James Cameron. The 55-year-old actor, known for his Texan drawl and easy charm, auditioned opposite Kate Winslet during early casting sessions for the 1997 blockbuster, and the claim he botched his try-out for the hit movie comes from producer Jon Landau's posthumous memoir, The Bigger Picture, which was excerpted in journalist Matthew Belloni's newsletter What I'm Hearing. Jon is said to have written: 'We brought (Matthew) in to do a scene with Kat (Winslet, for Titanic). You want to check for chemistry, not just how people look on film, but how they interact. Kate was taken with Matthew, his presence and charm. Matthew did the scene with the (Southern) drawl." According to Jon, after Matthew's initial reading, filmmaker James, now 70, asked him to perform the scene again without the Southern accent. The actor is said to have declined. 'That was pretty good. Thanks," Matthew apparently said, ending the audition without doing a second take. Jack Dawson, the character eventually portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio, was written as a working-class orphan from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, travelling back to America aboard the ill-fated RMS Titanic. While Matthew was rejected for the role, Leonardo, now 50, also initially caused friction during the audition process. In a 2022 interview with GQ, James recalled asking Leonardo to read lines in a test shoot alongside Winslet. The actor reportedly told him: 'Oh, I don't read." James replied that if he didn't read, he wouldn't get the part. Leonardo then agreed and delivered a strong performance. 'Kate just lit up … dark clouds had opened up and a ray of sun came down and lit up Jack," James said – adding: 'I'm like, 'Alright, he's the guy.'" Titanic, released in December 1997, became one of the most commercially and critically successful films of all time. Directed by James and starring Leonardo and Kate, the film tells the story of the actors' characters Jack and Rose – two young lovers from different social backgrounds who meet aboard the doomed ship. The film had a production budget of around $200 million and earned more than $2.2 billion globally. It became the highest-grossing film of all time at the time of its release, holding that title until James Cameron's Avatar overtook it in 2009. Titanic received 14 Academy Award nominations and won 11, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Song and Best Cinematography. It also catapulted both Leonardo and Kate – then aged 22 and 21 respectively – to international stardom. Despite narrowly missing the opportunity, Matthew went on to enjoy major success in Hollywood with roles in Dallas Buyers Club, Interstellar, and True Detective, earning an Academy Award in 2014.
