Kangana's Emergency faces legal row over alleged fact distortion by book's author

India Today23-04-2025
Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut's recent film 'Emergency' is facing legal scrutiny after senior journalist and author Coomi Kapoor accused the filmmakers of misusing her work and distorting facts.Kapoor has alleged that Manikarnika Films Private Limited, owned by Ranaut, along with Netflix, has 'intentionally and maliciously distorted facts' and exploited her name by claiming that the film is based on her 2015 book 'The Emergency: A Personal History', published by Penguin.advertisementShe stated that a tripartite agreement between herself, Penguin and Manikarnika Films regarding the adaptation rights of the book had been 'blatantly breached'.
Kapoor further accused the filmmakers of 'multiple factual inaccuracies and misleading portrayals of historical events'.'My daughter is a lawyer, so on her advice, I included two clauses. While the producers had full artistic freedom to create the film, nothing should be altered that contradicts historical facts that are publicly available,' Kapoor explained.'The contract also stated that the author's name and book could not be used for promoting or exploiting the film without prior written consent. I was in Goa and had not seen the film at the time, believing that they would honour the contract. But they are still claiming that the film is based on the book,' she added, noting that she has already sent two legal notices but has not received a response.advertisementKapoor also referenced an August 2023 WhatsApp exchange with Kangana Ranaut's brother, Aksht Ranaut of Manikarnika Films, where she stressed that the contract terms must be followed and that while referencing her book in the sources was acceptable, describing the film as 'based on her book' was not. Baaghi 4 Teaser: Tiger Shroff, Sanjay Dutt, And Harnaaz Sandhu Collide In Gritty Sequel

Mumbai: The much-awaited official teaser for Tiger Shroff's 'Baaghi 4' has been unveiled. Days after teasing fans with a bloodied poster, the actor confirmed the release date on Saturday, only to add to the growing buzz. The teaser opens on a sombre note with Tiger's voiceover in the background. As the character recalls the tragic loss of a loved one, the teaser continues with violent visuals, actions, and a lot of drama. Tiger Shroff makes a fierce entry as Ronny, this time taking over as both the "hero and the villain" of his story. He appears fuelled by vengeance, armed, and driven by a rage that leaves no enemy breathing. "Har Aashiq Ek Villain Hain... No escape. No mercy. Brace yourself -- a Bloody, Violent Love Story begins. #Baaghi4Teaser Out Now," Tiger wrote in the caption. Actor Sanjay Dutt is seen as a menacing killer antagonist, setting the stage for the "bloody and violent" story. "This is Dutt like you've never seen him before completely unleashed," the makers said about his role. The teaser also includes glimpses of the lead actresses, Sonam Bajwa and debutant Harnaaz Sandhu, who also ace the action scenes. Earlier this March, the makers released an intense new poster of the film on Tiger's 35th birthday. He was seen in a fierce and darker look, exuding a powerful aura. In the poster, Tiger's face was partially visible with blood dripping from his forehead while he held a cigarette between his lips. "This time he is not the same," read the tagline in the poster. Sharing the same on his Instagram handle, Tiger expressed gratitude towards the franchise that helped him become an "action hero." "The franchise that gave me an identity and allowed me to express my eagerness to prove myself as an action now the franchise that is changing my identity. He's definitely not the same this time, but I hope you guys accept him the way you did 8 years ago," the actor wrote in the post. Tiger completed the shooting of 'Baaghi 4' in July this year and shared the update with his fans. With pictures of himself from the sets, he wrote, "And finally it comes to an end ... thank you for all your love and allowing this franchise to reach so far. Don't think I've ever bled as much for any film. This one's for you. #4 coming soon." A fourth instalment in the beloved 'Baaghi' franchise, the film is directed by A. Harsha and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. 'Baaghi 4' will be released on September 5, 2025.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi linked the INDIA bloc leaders march to Election Commission as a "fight to save the Constitution" and a demanded a "pure" voters list while Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi accused the BJP-led Union governmnt of being "scared". Delhi police on Monday detained Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi and a host of other INDIA bloc leaders as the police foiled their march to Election Commmission to protest over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar and allegations of "vote chori" (vote theft) in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Rahul Gandhi told reporters while being detained, "The reality is that they cannot talk. The truth is in front of the country. This fight is not political. This fight is to save the Constitution. This fight is for One Man, One Vote. We want a clean, pure voters list." Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra told ANI, "Dare hue hai. Sarkaar kaayar hai" (They are scared. The Government is a coward). The other leaders who were detained were Shive Sena Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, and TMC MP Sagarika Ghose. The detained MPs were coralled into a bus to be taken to the Parliament Street police station. Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav was seen jumping over barricades as Delhi Police stopped the INDIA bloc MPs from marching to the Election Commission's office The Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister could be seen climbing over the barricades, installed by the police to block the protesting MPs. Akhilesh Yadav jumped to the other side to continue the protest. "They are using the police to stop us," Akhilesh Yadav shouted after crossing the barricades. "We are protesting peacefully. We consider Mahatma Gandhi as our ideal..." Supriya Sule said. Senior INDIA bloc leaders- Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, NCP SCP chief Sharad Pawar also joined the protest. The protest march began from the Makar Dwar of the Parliament under the leadership of Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The MPs began their march to urge the EC to address their concerns on the alleged "voter theft" The MPs were raising slogans of "vote chor" as they marched towards the office of the poll body at Nirvachan Sadan, before being halted by Police. The Delhi Police said that the MPs did not take permission for the march. BJP leader and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has accused the Congress of misleading the public. "The country can see if there is anyone who is working against the Constitution, it is led by Rahul Gandhi. SIR is not happening for the first time in the country. Congress lies about EVMs, raises the issue of Maharashtra elections, Haryana elections and creates a mountain of lies. It is their well-thought-out strategy to create a state of anarchy I appeal to the Opposition and the Congress party to raise all issues in discussion on Operation Sindoor in Parliament, the Opposition and Congress had no agenda.
