A five-pound Pomeranian in Canada has become an unlikely viral hero after chasing a black bear out of its owner's home.
The video, first shared by TikTok user kaylakleine and later reshared by journalist Colin Rugg on X, shows the small dog, named Scout, running after the bear as it retreats from the house and off the property.
The bear had reportedly wandered into the Vancouver home unnoticed. 'I had music playing (and) didn't hear the bear come in. It wandered around then ate Scout's food in the kitchen," the owner said.
But Scout quickly took charge. 'Scout heard and chased the bear out of the house and off the property," the owner recalled. Describing the tiny dog's fearless attitude, they added, 'He just likes to assert his dominance, or like we'll call him the alpha dog."
The short clip shows Scout barking and advancing toward the much larger animal until it leaves through the same door it entered.
Black bears are relatively common in parts of British Columbia, particularly in suburban areas where homes border forested land. They are generally shy but can be drawn toward residential areas by the smell of food. While bear sightings are not unusual in Vancouver and surrounding towns, finding one inside a home is rare — and having it chased out by a dog this small is rarer still.
This is not the first time a household pet has stood its ground against a bear. In 2014, a California family cat named Tara made headlines after it darted at a dog that was attacking a young boy in their driveway. While not a bear encounter, Tara's instinctive bravery was celebrated worldwide and she was even honoured in local ceremonies. In Canada, there have also been occasional reports of cats and small dogs confronting black bears, often with surprising success in startling the much larger animals into retreat.
