Bandh over FM student death brings Odisha districts to standstill

Normal life came to a standstill across districts of Odisha on Thursday as the Congress and Left parties observed a 12-hour statewide bandh demanding justice for the 20-year-old girl student of FM Autonomous College in Balasore who died of self-immolation over alleged sexual harassment by a teacher.
Public transport services were suspended across the state with hundreds of buses staying off the roads. While the bandh caused inconvenience to the public, no major incidents of violence were reported.
In Balasore, the epicentre of the protest, shops, educational institutions, government offices, banks and fuel stations remained shut from 6 am to 6 pm. Congress workers picketed at FM Golei and Station Bazaar squares while blocking traffic on NH-16 at Remuna and other key points.
In Mayurbhanj, commuters remained stranded at Baripada bus terminal. Congress workers staged protests in Baripada, Karanjia, Udala and Rairangpur with Bhanja Sena also joining the agitation.
The bandh also affected coal production and dispatch at eight mines in Talcher. Though power and aluminum sectors operated in the first shift, the second shift witnessed a thin attendance. Major highways like NH-55 and NH-149 were blocked. About 10 platoons of police force were deployed to maintain law and order. No untoward incidents were reported during the bandh, said IG, north central range Satyabrata Bhoi.
Similarly, normal life came to a halt in Koraput's Jeypore, Semiliguda, Kotpad, Borrigumma, and Laxmipur. No vehicular movement was reported on NH-26 and NH-326. Congress and CPI workers picketed across the district. Jeypore MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati led a dharna near Jeypore bus stand, criticising the BJP-led government's failure to protect women.
Complete shutdown was observed in Bhawanipatna, Kesinga, Junagarh, Dharamgarh and other blocks of Kalahandi district. Streets wore a deserted look, government offices were non-functional, and highways were blocked.
In Jajpur, protesters blocked NH-16, NH-20, and NH-53 at multiple points including Sathipur, Panikoili and Chandikhole. In Malkangiri, district Congress president Govind Patra and CPM leader Braja Majhi led the protests. Though schools were open, most students stayed home. Malkangiri town wore a deserted look as vehicular movement was completely disrupted.
Rourkela and other parts of Sundargarh district also wore a deserted look during the bandh. Congress and Left parties picketed at key junctions and blocked NH-143 and SH-10. Mining activities were disrupted in Koida and Hemgir. In Sundargarh town, agitators garlanded commuters, asking for solidarity.

Sarvai Papanna Goud Remembered on his 375 birth Anniversary, MLA Yennam Srinivas Reddy paid rich tributes

Mahbubnagar: Mahbubnagar MLA Yennam Srinivas Reddy paid rich tributes to legendary Bahujan warrior Sardar Sarvai Papanna Goud on his 375th birth anniversary in Mahabubnagar on Monday. Garlanding Papanna's statue in the district, the MLA describied him as a true revolutionary who proved that when the oppressed and Bahujans unite, they can achieve political power. At a program held at Padmavati Colony, Green Belt in Mahbubnagar, the MLA garlanded Papanna's statue and recalled his remarkable contribution to social justice and people's empowerment nearly 350 years ago. Speaking on the occasion, the MLA said that Papanna was the first Bahujan king who, in the 17th century, raised his own army, fought against feudal lords and jagirdars, and established a Bahujan kingdom with Khilashapur as his capital. 'Papanna Goud dreamt of a society without caste, religious, or communal divisions and stood as a symbol of courage and social justice, much before Mahatma Jyotirao Phule,' he said. He narrated how Papanna united Bahujans, Dalits, and minorities, formed a guerrilla army, looted the wealth of landlords, and distributed it among the poor. In 1675, he established his rule with Sarvaipet as the center and expanded his territory by capturing several estates. After Aurangzeb's death, Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah recognized Papanna's authority and even offered him a treaty, making him ruler of Golconda Fort. 'For the first time, the Bahujan flag fluttered atop Golconda Fort,' the MLA added. However, unable to tolerate his rule, landlords and feudal chiefs conspired with the Mughal rulers to dethrone him. Though Papanna fought valiantly, he was severely injured, and his death remains shrouded in legend. 'Yet, he lives forever in the hearts of Telangana's people as a symbol of Bahujan pride and resistance,' said Srinivas Reddy. The MLA announced that the Telangana government, under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and PCC Chief Mahesh Kumar Goud, would officially organize Papanna's birth and death anniversaries. He also revealed plans to install a statue of Papanna at Tank Bund, Hyderabad, and to set up his statues in villages across Telangana so that future generations learn about his history. Highlighting the Congress government's commitment to social justice, he reminded that the Assembly had already passed a resolution providing 42% reservation for Backward Classes, though the BJP-led central government opposed it. 'We fought in Delhi to ensure Bahujan rights, and we will continue the struggle,' he asserted. The event was attended by Minority Finance Corporation Chairman Obaidullah Kotwal, District Collector Vijayendra Boi, TPCC General Secretary Mithun Reddy, District Library Chairman Mallu Narasimha Reddy, Market Committee Chairperson Bekkari Anita Madhusudan Reddy, former Municipal Chairman Anand Goud, and several other leaders and dignitaries.

Opposition protests against SIR in Parliament complex

NEW DELHI: Several opposition MPs of INDIA bloc parties held a protest in the Parliament House complex on Monday against the Election Commission's voter roll revision in Bihar. Led by Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, the MPs of INDIA bloc raised "vote chor, gaddi chhor" and "vote chori band karo" slogans. They also held a big banner that read "vote chori" and held posters demanding "stop SIR". Leaders of Congress, TMC, DMK, Left parties and RJD and Samajwadi Party were seen holding posters and banners right outside the Makar Dwar of Parliament. Amid speculation that the opposition is mulling an impeachment motion against CEC Gyanesh Kumar, Congress leader Naseer Hussain told reporters they would use every democratic method to ensure that the Chief Election Commissioner should be a person who is "unbiased". The opposition has been protesting in both Houses of Parliament against the SIR, alleging that the EC's exercise is aimed at "disenfranchising voters" in Bihar ahead of the assembly elections due later this year. They have been demanding a discussion on the issue in both Houses. Barring discussions on Operation Sindoor in the two Houses, Parliament has seen little business ever since the Monsoon session began on July 21 due to repeated adjournments, mostly over the SIR issue.

Air India cancels Zurich-Delhi flight citing technical issue

MUMBAI: Air India on Monday said it cancelled its Zurich-Delhi flight of August 17 due to a technical reason, days after the Tata Group-owned airline stated that it had carried out a detailed "inspection" of its Boeing 787 aircraft fleet and "no issues" were detected. However, a passenger on board said the flight aborted take-off at the last minute due to an engine issue. In the last two days, Air India has cancelled at least two flights, including one international, at the last moment, citing technical reasons. Air India operates its Boeing 787-8/9 aircraft fleet to cater to the European market. "Flight AI152 scheduled to operate from Zurich to Delhi on 17 August has been cancelled due to a technical reason, and subsequently due to night curfew in Zurich," Air India said in a statement. The airline said it has arranged alternative flights to the passengers' destination and is providing hotel accommodation, along with full refunds on cancellations or complimentary rescheduling options for the passengers. "Air India flight from Zurich to Delhi is cancelled: aborted moments before take-off, technical issue in engine cited," said the passenger in a post on X. A Delhi-bound Air India plane, carrying Lok Sabha Member and Congress leader Hibi Eden among others, aborted take-off at the Kochi airport on Sunday due to a technical issue, officials said. Earlier, the airline was forced to cancel its Milan-Delhi flight owing to a technical issue which was detected during pushback. The airline, which came under private hands in January 2022, has recently been delaying and cancelling some flights at the last minute due to technical and maintenance issues. This comes despite repeated assurances from Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson that the airline has carried out comprehensive checks on its Boeing 787 aircraft fleet. In a message to the customers recently, while listing out the various steps taken after the fatal crash of an AI-171 flight to London soon after take-off from the Ahmedabad airport, Wilson said detailed inspections of its Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft were done and "no issues were found during inspection".
