79 arrested in West Rand during Operation Shanela
A total of 79 suspects were arrested in the West Rand during a high-impact crime crackdown led by Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, on Saturday evening, June 22.
The arrests formed part of Operation Shanela, a province-wide blitz conducted this past weekend, June 20-22, to tackle various criminal activities. Of the 79 arrests in the West Rand, more than 20 were for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Police also conducted raids and roadblocks in the area, targeting illegal liquor outlets and tracking down wanted suspects.

Authorities say these integrated operations aim to disrupt criminal networks, reduce illegal firearm circulation, and increase police visibility in communities.
Some of the arrested suspects have been released on fines for minor offences, while others are expected to appear in local magistrates' courts soon.

Help lay ‘beautiful soul' to rest
Friends of a man who was found deceased in the burned-down house in Van Wyk Louw Street are reaching out for donations to cremate him. Johannes Breedt died on June 17. According to his death certificate, he died of natural causes. Unieta Swanepoel, who knew Breedt described him as a beautiful soul who was snatched away by heroin. 'We loved and cared for him and always tried to get him off the streets. We would feed him; and allow him to have a hot shower and a warm bed. But it was always just for a day or two before he would disappear again,' Swanepoel said. She said he was sick and weak the Wednesday before his death when he visited her at home. 'I asked him if he used, and he replied he did not have money. When we found him, he had no blanket, just lying on boxes, frozen. I think he was so weak he couldn't get up to look for something warm and froze to death.' Although cremation is a more affordable option, it still carries a considerable cost. The cremation is estimated to cost R10 000. Swanepoel paid R1 000 and is pleading to the community to, in the shadow of drug addiction, show kindness and help her lay her friend to rest. More than 1k suspects nabbed in Gauteng during Operation Shanela over the weekend

Of those arrested, 78 were charged with drunk driving, while 786 were arrested by detectives tracing wanted suspects. READ: Over 200,000 Operation Shanela suspects have previous convictions The remaining arrests were made at roadblocks and during raids on illegal liquor outlets. Police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo, said the arrested suspects were expected to appear at various magistrates' courts around the province on Monday. "Provincial commissioner of the police in Gauteng, Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni led yet another successful integrated Operation Shanela in the West Rand. Parallel operations were conducted in Tshwane, Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Sedibeng districts, were 167 suspects were arrested."
