Sergio Garcia's Fireballs GC wins second straight at LIV Golf Hong Kong

HONG KONG – Sergio Garcia and his red-hot Fireballs GC team captured both trophies Sunday at LIV Golf Hong Kong, while HyFlyers GC Captain Phil Mickelson appears to have recaptured his Hall of Fame form.

Led by their captain, Garcia, the Fireballs have now won back-to-back tournaments, having claimed LIV Golf Adelaide last month. They will head to next week's LIV Golf Singapore seeking to become the first LIV Golf team to win three consecutive tournaments since the league expanded to a full 14-tournament schedule in 2023.
Garcia shot a bogey-free 7-under 63 to finish at 18 under and claim the individual title by three shots over hard-charging Dean Burmester, whose 62 was the low round of the day. Garcia, who finished third in the season-long Individual Championship race last season, moved atop the points standings after the first three events in 2025.
The 45-year-old Garcia played the final hole Sunday with a comfortable individual lead but needed to make par to avoid dropping into a team playoff with Burmester's Stinger GC. Facing a lengthy birdie putt, he rolled it to within tap-in range to seal the Fireballs' sixth LIV Golf team title in club history. They climbed atop the season-long team standings by 10 points over Legion XIII.
"It was nice to see not only that I was doing well and leading the tournament, but my teammates were playing great," said Garcia, who follows teammate Abraham Ancer as individual champions in Hong Kong. "They were keeping us there with a chance to win. Obviously, when you can pull the double, it's a lot sweeter than if it's just one of them. Very proud of them."
The Fireballs and Stingers appeared headed for a playoff until Luis Masaveu, the 22-year-old Spaniard signed by Garcia in the offseason, birdied his final hole, the short par-4 10th. "It feels incredible," said Masaveu. "Very happy for the team to be able to hole that putt and help them."
Masaveu shot an even-par 70, with Ancer shooting 65 and David Puig a bogey-free 67 for a three-day team total of 37 under. The South African Stingers shot 17 under as a team on Sunday to finish one shot back. Mickelson's HyFlyers GC tied for third at 34 under with Cameron Smith's Ripper GC, the reigning Team Champions. It was the HyFlyers' third podium result in team history.
Individually, Mickelson finished solo third after his 64 left him at 14 under. It's the first podium finish for the 54-year-old Mickelson since joining LIV Golf as an original member in 2022, and it couldn't have come at a better time with golf's first major just a month away at the Masters.
"The fact is, I'm hitting a lot of good shots," said Mickelson, who has won three of his six majors at Augusta National. "I'm playing some good golf. This is a building week as I continue to build into LIV and my goal of accomplishing a win in LIV as well as winning another major or getting ready for Augusta."

Garcia is also a past Masters champion, and his form has been superb for more than a year. Since the start of the 2024 LIV Golf season, he has two wins, three other runner-up finishes, and 13 top 20s in the last 16 LIV Golf regular season events, including 10 straight after Hong Kong.
He entered Sunday's final round with a share of the lead but made an early statement by holing a lengthy eagle putt at the par-5 third after finding the green in two with a 6-iron. That gave him a two-shot lead, which he never relinquished.
"It really got me in a good mood," Garcia said of the eagle. "I was very focused on what I wanted to do. But obviously, when that happens, it gets you going even more."
Always one of golf's best ball-strikers, Garcia's putting was dialed in at Hong Kong Golf Club, as he ranked third in the field in the fewest putts during the week after switching to one of his old putters.
"I played with him yesterday," Masaveu said. "He's a machine."
Asked if Garcia with a hot putter is as good as it gets in professional golf, Ancer offered a one-word response.
"Yes."

Paula Martin Sampedro fires Sunday 68 to win low amateur honors at Women's British Open

Stanford's Paula Martin Sampedro put an exclamation point on her week in Wales with a back-nine 30 that included five consecutive birdies. The Spaniard, who played alongside two-time Smyth Salver winner Lydia Ko, closed with a 4-under 68 to zoom up the board and currently holds a share of eighth at 4 under. Her 30 on the inward nine is the lowest of the week by two strokes. "Honestly, even in the front nine the couple the bogeys she made, she got some really nasty lip-outs," said Ko. "At that point if a couple of those dropped it would've been an unbelievable round. Was still an unbelievable round, and it was fun to play alongside her today." Martin Sampedro wraps up the coveted Smyth Salver for low amateur honors as Carla Bernat struggled with a 78 on Sunday to finish at 9 over for the championship, while Jeneath Wong shot 82 to finish at 17 over. Martin Sampedro becomes the fourth Spanish player to win the award, joining Marta Figueras-Dotti (1982), Elisa Serramia (2003) and Luna Sobron (2015). Her coach and caddie for the week, Alejandro Larrazabal, won the British Amateur at Royal Porthcawl in 2002. "My first three, four holes were really rough," said Martin Sampedro. "There was no way I was getting two on 1, it's a par 4. Then the first four holes, with perfect conditions are already so hard, so I knew it was going to be a tough beginning. "And then just managed to keep calm and just hole a couple putts, and then I started to see the lines better ... it was definitely a good birdie stretch on the back nine." The list of recent Smyth Salver winners is packed with stars. The award, given to the low amateur at the AIG Women's British Open, has served as a strong indicator of future success, with names like Danielle Kang, Georgia Hall, Leona Maguire, Jeeno Thitikul, Ko, and most recently, Lottie Woad, receiving the honor. It's been a massive summer for Martin Sampedro, who won both the British Women's Amateur and European Ladies' Amateur Championship in Germany. The British Amateur victory exempts her into next year's championship. Martin Sampedro currently ranks third in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Red Sox' Shocking Offer Revealed For Twins' Joe Ryan At Trade Deadline

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. After a disappointing -- to say the least -- trade deadline day, the Boston Red Sox and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow took a beating from fans and the media. One top MLB insider, Ken Rosenthal, on his Fair Territory podcast, slammed Boston's efforts as an "epic fail." The Red Sox sought on Thursday to acquire the Minnesota Twins' 29-year-old righty ace Joe Ryan, but ultimately Breslow's attempt fell flat. Rosenthal then piled on, deriding the Red Sox executive's efforts to deal for Ryan as "feeble." MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - JUNE 22: Joe Ryan #41 of the Minnesota Twins celebrates recording a complete game shutout against the Boston Red Sox after the game at Target Field on June 22, 2023 in Minneapolis,... MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - JUNE 22: Joe Ryan #41 of the Minnesota Twins celebrates recording a complete game shutout against the Boston Red Sox after the game at Target Field on June 22, 2023 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Twins defeated the Red Sox 6-0. MoreBut were they? Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reported that the Red Sox were not willing to offer "an enticing enough package of their top-tier prospects" to Minnesota. A new report by a longtime Red Sox insider, Rob Bradford of Boston radio station WEEI and his own Baseball Isn't Boring podcast, would appear to directly contradict the previous reporting. "There was also the rare willingness to include anybody and everybody from the Sox's minor league system in the deals," Bradford wrote, in a Saturday report for "Payton Tolle. Jhostynxon Garcia. Franklin Arias. Two of the three, in different combinations, were offered up together as part of packages that also included members of the Sox's Top 10 prospect list." Who are Tolle, Garcia, and Arias? Only the top three prospects in the Red Sox system — a system that Bleacher Report ranked seventh in the big leagues prior to the trade deadline (though it dropped to No. 10 after Thursday). More MLB: Red Sox Whiff on Trade For 36-Year-Old Righty Who Was Drafted 3 Times In addition to ranking Arias first, Garcia second and Tolle third in the Boston farm system, MLB Pipeline also ranks all three in the top 100 prospects league-wide. Arias, a 19-year-old shortstop signed in 2023 out of Venezuela, is the No. 33 prospect in baseball, according to the Pipeline. Garcia, who comes with the amusing nickname "The Password" in honor of his confusingly spelled given name, ranks No. 88. A power-hitting outfielder with 13 home runs and a .928 OPS in 205 at-bats for Triple-A Worcester, Garcia was a 2019 signing, also out of Venezuela. Tolle just cracked the MLB Pipeline top 100 on July 19, at No. 100. But in two weeks, the 22-year-old left-handed power pitcher has moved up to No. 92. Drafted in the second round, 50th overall, in 2024, the imposing Tolle who stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 250 pounds, has already struck out 31 in 23 innings after his promotion to the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs. The former two-way player at Wichita State, who focused solely on pitching after a transfer to Texas Christian, dominated the High-A ranks to start the season, fanning 79 in just 44 2/3 innings for the Greenville Drive. "In order to add impact players, particularly impact starting pitching, we had to take the position that we'd be willing to talk about anybody in our system, and we were," Breslow said Saturday, as quoted by Conor Roche of Breslow said that he would "strongly disagree" with Rosenthal's description of his efforts to get Ryan as "feeble," and if Bradford's report that he was willing to part with two of the Red Sox' best prospects — as well as others from the organization's top 10 — is accurate, it is understandable why he would feel that way. Red Sox Open Intriguing New Path For Fan-Favorite Prospect To Reach MLB

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Red Sox have so many good young position players that it's become difficult for the next wave of prospects to carve a path to the big leagues. This season, the "Big Three" of Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, and Kristian Campbell all debuted, while rookie catcher Carlos Narváez has won the starting job behind the plate. Last year, it was Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu getting their first extended looks, and both have become instrumental pieces of the outfield. That leaves the outfield picture overcrowded, as many Red Sox fans are keenly aware. And it leaves little room for top prospect Jhostynxon Garcia, a fan-favorite minor league outfielder nicknamed "The Password," to make his big-league impact. FORT MYERS, FLORIDA - MARCH 14: Jhostynxon Garcia #91 of the Boston Red Sox walks into the dugout before an exhibition game against the Minnesota Twins at JetBlue Park at Fenway South on March 14, 2025 in Fort Myers, Florida. More Maddie Malhotra/BostonGarcia, the No. 88 prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline, has raked in Double-A and Triple-A this season, but he's primarily played center field. It was somewhat surprising he wasn't traded at Thursday's deadline, but perhaps the Red Sox see a new path forward for him to arrive in Boston. According to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, the Red Sox intend to get Garcia some reps at first base at some point this season. McCaffrey initially reported that tidbit on Tuesday, but it picked up traction when she wrote a separate post about it on Friday. "Red Sox farm director Brian Abraham ... said getting Garcia reps at first is something they've discussed. Still, since Kristian Campbell was optioned to Worcester and has seen increased time at first, alongside Vaughn Grissom, there's been less playing time available to introduce Garcia to the spot," wrote McCaffrey. "He suggested they'd try to get Garcia reps at first base at some point later this season." First base has been the most unstable position for the Red Sox all season, with Triston Casas' injury, Rafael Devers' refusal to play the position, Campbell learning in the minors, and Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez continuing their platoon for the last three months. If Garcia, who has a .921 OPS in 52 games at Triple-A, can learn the position, perhaps he has a long-term future in Boston after all. And though he's played adequate defense in center this year, he does have more of a first baseman's build. By no means has Garcia yet secured his long-term spot in the Boston lineup, but this could be a key step in that direction.
