Tesla China starts taking orders for longer-range Model 3 EV, with 14% price bump

Tesla has begun offering its longer-range Model 3 variant to Chinese customers as it fights to regain market share from local rivals amid intense competition in the country's premium electric vehicle (EV) segment. The US company announced on Tuesday that the new car, which has a range of 830km, would be priced at 269,500 yuan (US$37,492) on the mainland, 14 per cent higher than the basic edition, which has a 634km range. 'The new variant has a longer driving range, and it is better in performance and efficiency,' Tesla China said, adding that customers could place orders from Tuesday, with deliveries slated to begin next month. The car represents part of Tesla's effort to cater to rich mainland consumers' demand for longer-range and more spacious vehicles in the face of mounting challenges from home-grown rivals like Li Auto and Xiaomi The EV features a high-performance battery from LG Energy Solution and a single motor with higher peak power than the existing Model 3. Once the runaway leader in China's premium EV segment, Tesla's deliveries on the mainland dropped in July amid escalating competition. The company's Gigafactory in Shanghai handed 67,886 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles to customers in China and abroad last month, down 8.4 per cent from a year earlier, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). Deliveries fell 5.2 per cent from June.

Musk says xAI to take legal action against Apple over App Store rankings

Billionaire Elon Musk said on Monday his artificial intelligence start-up xAI would take legal action against Apple , accusing the iPhone maker of breaching antitrust regulations in managing the App Store rankings. 'Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation,' Musk said in a post on his social media platform X. 'xAI will take immediate legal action.' Musk did not provide evidence to support his claim. Apple, OpenAI and xAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment. OpenAI's ChatGPT currently holds the top spot in the App Store's 'Top Free Apps' section for iPhones in the US, while xAI's Grok ranks fifth and Google's Gemini chatbot sits at 57th. ChatGPT also leads the rankings on the Google Play Store, according to Sensor Tower data. Apple has a partnership with OpenAI that integrates ChatGPT into iPhones, iPads and Macs.

'Firms eye mainland, Asia-Pacific markets via HK'

'Firms eye mainland, Asia-Pacific markets via HK' Florian Lang, centre, says Hong Kong is unrivalled as an international financial hub. Photo: RTHK Two overseas firms that have already established their presence in Hong Kong said they see the SAR as a gateway for the mainland and Asia-Pacific markets. French fintech start-up Libertify, a company utilising artificial intelligence to generate videos for creative storytelling, opened an office here after winning the InvestHK's Global FastTrack Award in 2023. Founder CEO APAC of Libertify, Florian Lang, said it is a 'milestone' for the company to set up its Asia hub in Hong Kong as it tries to penetrate the China and other Asia-Pacific markets. "Hong Kong is the financial hub that has no equivalent in the region, even in the world," he said, adding that the company is well-connected in the city. "Market is also integrating latest policies, latest trends... much faster than the other ones. We are targeting to expand all across APAC, also in mainland China, and we think that Hong Kong is the true first step to go on both of those markets." Libertify has about 10 clients in Hong Kong at the moment and Lang sees strong potential growth moving forward. "In 2024, AI was quite new. So most of our clients were looking at it but they didn't know where to fit it, to integrate it in their system," he said. "Now, we see a massive change because everybody needs it. They know where it can fit, so there is a huge acceleration and we are very optimistic for 2025 as the traction and the trends are going strongly in our direction." Meanwhile, Italian food importer and distributor Bright View Trading said operating in Hong Kong is crucial for the company's development, as the SAR is an important hub for the catering market. "It's important to be here because it's representative of all the best cuisine and restaurants in the world. For us, it's a gateway also to China and the Asian market," said general manager Michele Bernacchia. Bright View already has a presence on the mainland and is looking to expand in the Greater Bay Area. Bernacchia added that the firm is adapting to the changing market by adjusting its costs and enhancing its competitiveness. InvestHK's senior vice president of fintech digital market, Brain Cook, said the investment body will continue to host promotions and global competitions to attract enterprises with potential. He said InvestHK will also offer support for these companies after they set up shop in the SAR.
