Born in Lubbock, Texas, in 1983, Harjes initially cultivated a passion for animals—especially horses—before pursuing acting in college and launching his stage career in the Dallas–Fort Worth theater scene. He later moved to New York City, immersing himself in off-Broadway productions and independent films before making his television debut.
Harjes' breakthrough came with his portrayal of boxing legend Jack Dempsey in two episodes of HBO's 'Boardwalk Empire' during its second season. He also appeared in a nine-episode arc as
