Fetakgomo Tubatse Exco donates to Bapedi Royal House
Mayor Cllr Eddie Maila, and his Executive Committees (EXCO) paid a courtesy visit to Bapedi Queen Mother Manyaku Thulare at Mošate Mogolo wa Bapedi in Mohlaletsi on August 11 to convey his gratitude on behalf of the municipality.
Maila expressed his appreciation for the Bapedi Royal House attendance of the State of the Local Municipality Address (Solma) held on August 7 at Motodi Sports Complex.
The mayor highlighted that the event was a great success and the presence of the Queen Mother was of immense significance.
'The attendance of Queen Mother and other tribal leaders around Fetakgomo-Tubatse symbolised the strong partnership and mutual respect that exists between the municipality and traditional leadership,' said Maila.
In her address, Queen Mother thanked Maila and his Exco for their continued collaboration with the Bapedi Royal House and the consistent support provided.
She also commended Maila for organising a successful event and acknowledged the overwhelming support from communities who attended in large numbers.
Queen Mother encouraged the mayor and his Exco to remain humble and lead the community with respect. She bestowed her blessings upon the leadership of the municipality and urged them to continue protecting traditional leaders.
As part of the visit, Maila donated two cows and groceries to feed community members who regularly visit the Bapedi Royal House.
In addition, 20 blankets and three laptops were handed over to assist with administrative work.

Court rules on dual marriages: A customary wife's fight for recognition
The Mpumalanga High Court took a closer look at the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act during a battle between two wives and ruled that if there is no divorce, there is no valid second marriage. Image: File Two wives and one husband were yet again the legal question the court had to grapple with, with the first wife, who was married to her now deceased husband in terms of customary law, wanting the court to declare her the true wife. The husband died in 2023 at the age of 43 in a car accident. In order to benefit from his estate, the applicant (first wife) turned to the Mpumalanga High Court to declare his second marriage invalid. In 2017, the deceased sent emissaries to her family to negotiate lobola. The negotiations were conducted in terms of Bapedi and Swati customs. Lobola for the applicant was finally agreed between the two families at R12,000 in cash and 13 cattle. The marriage was, however, not registered with the Department of Home Affairs until the death of the deceased. Two years later, the deceased met another woman and the two fell in love. 'Like a man who fell out of love, he moved out of the home he shared with his wife, the applicant, in order to stay with the first respondent, in her house. He never went back to his wife,' Deputy Judge President Takalani Ratshibvuma noted. In 2020, the deceased and the first respondent signed into a civil marriage that was solemnised at Home Affairs. He subsequently also paid lobola to her family, R20,000, being 10 cattle each valued at R2,000, which was paid right away. Thus, the deceased's second marriage was recognised as both a civil and customary union. The first wife never consented to the second marriage, and that marriage was also never dissolved through a divorce decree. Based on these, the applicant argues that the deceased's marriage to the first respondent is unlawful and should be declared void. Although the applicant attended the deceased's funeral, she played no role therein, watching from a distance as his family accorded the widow's status to the first respondent. The latter said the court should consider this as reason enough to recognise her as the only lawful wife of the deceased. She further argued that although she did not know of the deceased's marriage to the applicant, the court should consider it to have been irretrievably broken down. In the alternative, she submitted that the deceased's two marriages, one to her and the other to the applicant, should all be recognised as customary marriages entered in terms of the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act.

Magakala road and bridge project 100% complete
The Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM) continues to improve access and mobility in rural areas. The Magakala Access Road and Bridge Project will soon be handed to the communities. The FTLM's mayor, Eddie Maila, visited the site on May 29 for inspection before its official handover. This project in the FTLM's Ward 39 (Mohlaletsi) is 100% complete. Maila commended the community for working with the municipality and the contractors to ensure that the project is implemented without major hindrances. Before the construction of this road, it was difficult for the community to access essential services such as schools and clinics due to the harsh conditions of the gravel road. Access was especially limited during rainy season as there was no bridge to cross the river. Maila and his team took a walkabout on the four kilometre stretch of the road to assess its condition. He said the completed project will bring much relief to the Magakala community in terms of safer roads and accessibility. Nthabi Tladi, a community member, thanked the mayor and the municipality for implementing the road project, as it was difficult for the residents to conduct their daily business. She said the road is going to change their lives forever. After visiting the Magakala access road, Maila also conducted another inspection at Debeila-Mohlaletsi road. This inspection was done to give the mayor an insight on the challenges raised by the community and other stakeholders on the development of the road project. Maila indicated that the road's completion is long overdue and all the remaining issues must be addressed, so it could be handed over to the community.
