Nigerians would need to pay more for Netflix despite diminishing purchasing power
The Basic plan now costs ₦4,000, up from ₦3,500, and the Mobile plan is now ₦2,500, up from ₦2,200. This new adjustment comes after previous increases in July 2024, further pinching customers in a country dealing with economic contraction and rising inflation. In July 2024, the Premium plan increased by 40% to ₦7,000 ($4.40), the Standard plan by 37.5% to ₦5,500 ($3.46), the Basic plan by 21% to ₦3,500 ($2.20), and the Mobile plan from ₦1,600 ($1.01) to ₦2,200 ($1.38). Earlier in April of the same year, the streaming service announced a price increase for its Premium Plan, raising it from N4,400 to N5,000. At the same time, the Standard Plan increased from N3,600 to N4,000, while the Basic Plan stayed at N2,900. The Nigerian economy has suffered significantly in recent years, with the country's currency, the naira, depreciating and consumer purchasing power plummeting. With the country's inflation continuing to increase, the cost of basic goods and services has risen, making discretionary spending, such as video streaming, more difficult to justify for many Nigerians. Streaming subscriptions are more expensive in industrialized countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom, but customers often earn much more, making such services reasonably affordable. For example, although Americans pay $15.49 (approximately ₦24,000 at current exchange rates) for Netflix's Standard plan, the average U.S. worker makes more than $60,000 per year. Nigeria's minimum monthly salary remains at ₦70,000, with many earning significantly less in the informal economy. This is more complex when you consider that Nigeria's current minimum wage of ₦70,000 is merely $43, compared to its minimum wage of ₦30,000 as of 2022, which was $70 when exchanged at the average rate of ₦423.7 at the end of the year. This dip highlights Nigeria's declining purchasing power in the face of one of its worst economic periods in the country's history. This disparity in purchasing power parity (PPP) also demonstrates the increasing difficulties of developing global subscription models in poor nations. As streaming platforms pursue profitability, they risk losing customers in price-sensitive areas such as Nigeria. Unless updated price structures or regional considerations are applied, subscription-based services may see decreased popularity in places where economic hardship makes digital entertainment increasingly costly.

Why Dollar Tree Stock Is Sinking Today
Dollar Tree published its fiscal Q1 results after the market closed yesterday and beat sales and earnings expectations. Despite Dollar Tree topping Wall Street's sales and earnings targets for Q1, its forward guidance is disappointing investors. Earnings will get a boost from stock buybacks, but the company's sales target for this year is prompting sell-offs for the stock. 10 stocks we like better than Dollar Tree › Dollar Tree (NASDAQ: DLTR) stock is losing ground in Wednesday's trading following the company's recent quarterly report. The discount retailer's share price was down 8.5% as of 3 p.m. ET. After the market closed yesterday, Dollar Tree published results for the first quarter of its current fiscal year -- which ended May 3. The company posted sales and earnings for the period that beat Wall Street's expectations, but management's forward guidance suggested that tariff impacts will likely be a significant headwind. Dollar Tree reported non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings per share from continuing operations of $1.26 on sales of $4.64 billion in the first quarter. The performance came in significantly ahead of the average Wall Street analyst estimate, which had called for adjusted earnings per share of $1.21 on sales of $4.53 billion. Dollar Tree's revenue was up 11.3% year over year in the period, with same-store sales increasing 5.4% annually. The growth for same-store sales was driven by a 2.5% increase in customer traffic and a 2.8% increase for average ticket size. But even though the company delivered sales and earnings beats in Q1, investors aren't happy with the forward outlook. Dollar Tree reiterated its full-year guidance for sales to be between $18.5 billion and $19.1 billion. With the average analyst estimate calling for full-year sales of $18.95 billion, management's sales forecast disappointed investors. Dollar Tree did guide for adjusted full-year earnings to be between $5.15 per share and $5.65 per share, a prediction that came in ahead of the average Wall Street forecast's call for adjusted earnings of $5.21 per share for the year. On the other hand, the new earnings guidance reflects the impact of significant stock buybacks. Walser Wealth Management CEO breaks down how to play Apple and other tech names
Rebecca Walser, CEO of Walser Wealth Management, joined CNBC's "Power Lunch" on Wednesday to discuss Apple following a notable downgrade, as well as Netflix and Snowflake . Here's what she had to say about each technology name during the " Three-Stock Lunch " segment. Apple Walser said she agreed with Needham analyst Laura Martin, who downgraded shares of the personal technology giant to hold from buy on Wednesday. Martin said the company is facing relatively high valuation and growth competition. Walser said concerns over President Donald Trump's tariffs have weighed on the iPhone maker, with investors wondering what's next following the expiration of many of the president's delayed levies on July 9. Apple is known for its high proportion of international manufacturing. "It's not really Apple's fault," Walser said. "It's all the tariff talk and all the fact that, they have very heavily relied on supply chains to be in Asia." "This is a direct trade war between the United States and China, and it expires July 9," she added. "It's really concerning to us that we haven't seen headway." Despite the Needham downgrade, most analysts have a buy rating, according to LSEG. The average price target implies shares can rally more than 13% over the next year. That would mark a turn for Apple shares, which have fallen about 19% in 2025. Netflix Walser called Netflix "very expensive." The stock climbed to a 52-week high in Wednesday's session and has soared nearly 40% in 2025. "I would say right now, we are going to be a hold on this, potentially even a sell if we don't see that … subscriber growth and see the actual growth that they're projecting in the next quarter," Walser said. Netflix stopped reporting its quarterly subscriber figures in the first quarter of 2025, and Walser said she is concerned that she doesn't see the data going into those counts. The majority of analysts have a buy rating on the stock, according to LSEG. However, the typical price target suggests shares can slide more than 6% over the next year. Snowflake Walser also deemed data storage play Snowflake an expensive stock and said it could be a risk if the multi-year data investment cycle doesn't pan out as hoped for. Shares also hit a 52-week high on Wednesday and are now up 35% on the year. SNOW NFLX YTD mountain Snowflake and Netflix in 2025 "It's an expensive stock," she said. "And if that deal doesn't materialize, or it doesn't materialize to the extent necessary, then there is going to be a pullback, and you're going to have some unhappy people." Most analysts surveyed by LSEG have a buy rating on the stock. The average analyst foresees more than 6% in upside.
