Orlando Pirates legend questions the boss
Orlando Pirates supporters' big question has finally been answered. Abdeslam Ouaddou has replaced Jose Riviero as the head coach.
The 46-year-old Moroccan caught the eye while coaching Marumo Gallants late last season. He saved the club's top-flight status in 12 games.
Following his shock appointment to coach Orlando Pirates, the club's former midfielder, Benedict Vilakazi, does not agree with the call.

'To be honest, I'm not entirely convinced that he's the coach who can elevate Pirates to the next level,' said Vilakazi, speaking exclusively to the Siya crew.

'I'm not questioning his credentials or ability, he's clearly shown promise, and we've seen some of his work during his time at Marumo Gallants. But this is Orlando Pirates, and the pressure here is completely different. This is a club with massive expectations, where every decision is scrutinised, and the demand for results is constant,' he said.
The Soweto-born legend concluded that he will support Ouaddou and hope for the best.
That said, we have to give him a fair chance, just like other coaches who came before him. We can only judge his impact over time. For now, all we can do is support him.
'Coaching a club of Orlando Pirates' stature is no child's play – it takes more than just tactics. It requires full support from management, the players, and especially the supporters. I truly wish him all the best because he will need all the backing he can get,' Vilakazi concluded.

Spirited Sundowns slip out of Club World Cup
A goalless draw with Fluminense leaves Sundowns just short of making the last 16. Despite the best efforts of Lucas Ribeiro (left) Mamelodi Sundowns could not find a way past Fluminense. Picture: Hector Vivas – FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images Mamelodi Sundowns bowed out of the Fifa Club World Cup on Wednesday, a goalless Group F draw with Fluminense not enough to see Miguel Cardoso's side into the last 16. ALSO READ: Orbit fly past City to seal Betway Premiership spot Masandawana paid in the end for not making the most of an energetic start at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Sundowns can be proud, but… The Tshwane giants can leave the USA with their heads held high, as well as several million dollars richer. There will also, however, be a feeling of what might have been after the way Miguel Cardoso's side dazzled at times in defeat to Borussia Dortmund, and here. Sundowns came flying out of the blocks in a hot Miami, testing Fluminense 'keeper Flavio three times in the opening ten minutes. Lucas Ribeiro produced some dancing feet to create some space for himself, and fired in a shot that was on target but easy for Fabio to gather. Ribeiro then provided a sublime through ball for Tashreeq Matthews, who had only Fabio to beat, but the onrushing 'keeper made the block. Masandawana push Fabio also repelled Divine Lunga's near post effort, as Sundowns piled on the pressure. Fluminense defender Juan Freytes courted disaster in the 15th minute as his attempted clearance from inside his own penalty area was blocked by Themba Zwane. The ball could have gone anywhere but it looped into the air and the danger was cleared. The Brazilian side grew into the game as the half wore on and Matheus Martinelli's fine pass found Fluminense captain Jhon Arias. He smashed his shot across Williams but also just wide of the far post. Cardoso made a sensible decision to take off Teboho Mokoena at half time. The Sundowns midfielder was booked early on by English referee Anthony Taylor for a poor tackle. Taylor chose not to book Mokoena for another late challenge closer to the break, but he did look at risk of a red card. Jayden Adams came on in Mokoena's place. Hard to break down Sundowns kept the ball well and were patient but battled to find a way through a Fluminense side that looked better-organised defensively in the second half. And it was Fluminense who came close to scoring in the 57th minute. German Cano raced into the box to meet Arias' cross and slammed his shot against the post. More questions on new Orlando Pirates coach
Orlando Pirates have made a surprise decision. Abdeslam Ouaddou will oversee the Buccaneers in the 2025/2026 Betway Premiership season. The Moroccan coach needed 12 games with Marumo Gallants to win over the Sea Robbers boss, Dr Irvin Khoza. According to the former Orlando Pirates midfielder, James Mothibi, Ouaddou is probably qualified on paper, but the pressure of coaching the Sea Robbers is different gravy. New Orlando Pirates star tipped for Europe The Buccaneers' new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou with his predecessor Jose Riveiro. Image: Sowetan Benedict Vilakazi questions the Khoza 'I think he is a good coach, the only challenge is how he is going to continue where Jose (Riveiro) left off and I'm worried about him handling the pressure that comes with managing big teams like Orlando Pirates,' Mothibi said via Soccer Laduma . 'Will he be able to handle that pressure? Does he have what it takes to handle the pressure? Pirates have a different pressure and heavy pressure but let's hope he can handle that. 'I really don't know him that much. I have no idea of his coaching philosophy,' Mothibi continued. 'I just saw him at Marumo Gallants but good luck to the brother. I wish him all the best to help the team achieve more from next season,' he concluded. Orbit College graduate to Premiership and relegate Cape Town City
Orbit College will play in the Betway Premiership next season football after securing promotion with their 1-0 playoffs win over Cape Town City at Olympia Park in Rustenburg on Wednesday. In the process, the Citizens were relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC), unable to retain their status in the promotion-relegation playoffs after finishing 15th in the 2024-25 Premiership. There were tears of joy after the final whistle for Orbit as they joined Durban City as the two teams from the MFC to be promoted to the Premiership to play top-flight football. Letsie Koapeng netted the only goal of the match two minutes after the break. Orbit finished the playoff mini-league with eight points after two wins and two draws. Olympia Park erupts 🥳🎉 Letsie Koapeng puts Orbit College within touching distance of #BetwayPrem promotion 👀 📺 Stream on DStv: — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) June 25, 2025 Orbit came into the fixture leading both City and Casric Stars by three points after their 1-0 win against Casric in Mbombela last week and knew a win would be enough to seal promotion. Orbit coach Pogiso Makhoye was full of praise for his players and said they knew this was their moment this season after they went toe-to-toe with Durban City in the MFC. 'It was difficult, I didn't prepare the team for the first two games as I was sick,' Makhoye told SuperSport TV after the game. 'I would like to thank Mpumi and Nkosana [PSL chair and Orlando Pirates owner Irvin Khoza's children] for guiding me. Those are my mentors and congratulations to them, and I'm very proud of myself because they believed in me to say, 'One day you will make history'. Tshepo 'Jomo' Matsemela is back in the big time 🤩🙌 Look at what promotion means to the Orbit College players 👇 #SSDiski | #BetwayPrem — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) June 25, 2025 'We deserve to be here because we were the second-best team in the MFC. We took Durban City toe-to-toe to the last day and we knew that this was our moment we needed to promote this team. 'And thanks to the people of Bokone Bophirima [the North West] — they were starving for [Premiership] football. 'I wanted to create a legacy even when I started with this club. It was a college team and I said one day I needed to promote it to MFC and then take it to the Premiership. And I'm happy I have delivered that to the North West people.' City interim coach Diogo Peral was disappointed with the result. 'What can we do? We had a lot of chances to put them away and we didn't do it,' he said.
