
Arikchely, Dazeree win ultra marathon

By: GL Oh Text Size: The top five finishers in the men's open 50km categories with N8 Nutrition representative Henry Kudther Gungkat (in white). Kota Kinabalu: Local runners Arikchely Ariyl Arikah and Dazeree Joan Joannes emerged champions in the Sulaman Ultra Marathon 2025 held in Tuaran last Sunday. Arikchely, who hails from Kiulu, captured the men's 50km open title with his time of 4 hours, 11 minutes and six seconds, while Dazeree from Tamparuli crossed the finishing line in five hours, 37 minutes and took the women's title.
Advertisement Second to fifth places went to Awang Amirul Yazid Awang Azmi (04:46:26), Mohd Yusof (04:47:59), Mohd Taufiq Rasdi (04:48:26) and Kasman Dali (04:59:50) in the men's category, and Jessica Suip (05:53:43), Melvi Ehen (06:22:20), Elvina Jimin (06:31:14) and Adeline Mustal (06:35:01) for the women. In the veteran 50km event, the men's title went to Osman Bujang (04:46:25) and in second place was Ong Choon Keat (05:26:22) with Ronnie Francis (05:31:03) in third. The women's title was won by Margretta Walther (05:52:58) followed by Maria Joycelyn Tugna (06:22:24) and Lusia Jail (07:06:56). In the 25km race, Rozzain Abby (01:56:22) took the men's open title ahead of Nursahirul Kadir (02:01:27) and Ahirunnashrah Ahmad (02:06:34), while the women's title went to Sofia Raidin (02:39:59) followed by Casandra Severinus (02:48:53) and Fredda Evanna Jemie (03:01:06). Davey Liew (01:56:28) was the winner in the men's veteran category. Second place went to Jasuel Lukim (02:00:59) with Dainis Odong (02:11:20) in third, while the top three winners in the women's category were Iene Goh (02:16:46), Moinis Vitalis (03:23:49) and Louise Chan Fui Sen (03:30:44). More than 500 runners including some from outside the state took part in the annual event organised by MHZ Technology Corporation and the race director was Halna Mohd Jain. It was fully supported by Tourism Malaysia and the Malaysia Ultra Running Association as well as receiving sponsorship from local and international brands including N8 Nutrition, Quaser, JK Bal Sport Sdn. Ewon urges Sabah youth to embrace sports

PENAMPANG: Young people have been urged to embrace sports to adopt a healthier lifestyle, foster unity and open doors to entrepreneurship. Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Ewon Benedick emphasised that the value of organising sports competitions not only unearths new talents but also plays a crucial role in fostering unity, teamwork and friendship among the people. Officiating the 2025 National Boxing Championship at the Sabah Cultural Centre in Penampang, Ewon highlighted how sports provide a platform to promote healthy competition, enhance understanding, build camaraderie and strengthen national unity. Advertisement 'My presence here signifies support for sports as a platform for unity, friendship and togetherness among the people, while also nurturing national boxing athletes, particularly from Sabah,' he stated. During the event, organised by the Malaysian Boxing Federation, Ewon who was also representing the Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh, presented a mock cheque for an RM170,000 allocation from the Ministry of Youth and Sports as a grant for the championship. Ewon further detailed how his Ministry supports young entrepreneurs in the sports industry through various funding facilities. 'Among the options available is the Sports Industry Financing Scheme under Bank Rakyat. Additionally, Tekun Nasional provides funding for small entrepreneurs in the gymnasium and sports equipment businesses,' he explained. He added that youth cooperatives engaged in business can also apply for grants from the Malaysia Co-operative Societies Commission (SKM), provided they are properly registered and conducting legitimate cooperative business activities. Simem sailors to take part in Merdeka Day Open Regatta

Kota Kinabalu: The Simem sailing teams from the Taiwan Tainan Municipal Simem Elementary School are set to take part in the 30th Merdeka Day Open Regatta at the Kinabalu Yacht Club (KYC) in Tanjung Aru on August 1. Club manager Tony Lai said the team members who will arrive on July 27 are also here for another training stint with KYC as base until August 6. Advertisement According to him, it will be the school's second trip this year following the earlier group consisting of 16 students, who were here from June 27-July 14. Club commodore Albert Shim in his speech at the farewell dinner for the first group hosted by the general committee on July 12 said the club is proud to be chosen by the school as their training venue for the past three years. 'We are very honoured that you have appointed our club as your training base and it has been three years in a row. 'We are hoping you will continue to come back to pay us a visit in years to come,' he said. Meanwhile, a representative from the school expressed his gratitude to KYC for the support and hospitality. 'We are very happy to be here for the fifth time. KYC is truly an excellent place for sailing as they offer great support and facilities.
