Meet Disney Legend Bob Gurr at the Premiere of His New Movie

Yahoo23-04-2025

Untold millions have had the times of their lives onboard Bob Gurr's ride vehicles at Disneyland, cowering from his King Kong at Universal Studios or marveling at the sinking pirate ship he built on the Las Vegas Strip. He created a flying saucer that flew above the Coliseum at the close of the 1984 Olympics, the most-viewed event in TV history. The 93-year-old designer is the subject of a new documentary premiering April 26 at the Alex Theatre in Glendale. Bob Gurr: Living By Design showcases the Disney legend who is also a pilot, a sailor and a Burning Man enthusiast, with boundless energy and a curiosity that has inspired him since he was a kid.
The L.A. native is excited for a red-carpet premiere at the 100-year-old movie house he frequented before becoming one of the first Disney Imagineers. 'I had all of Glendale to go snooping around,' Gurr says. 'My father gave me money to go see movies and I saw The Wizard of Oz when it first came out.' He's also notoriously picky about movies. 'I would say it takes me longer to select a movie for the evening than it takes to actually watch it,' he says. 'I like to see really good work. Really good work the way Walt Disney used to do stuff. I'm sorry but I'm spoiled. I don't see a movie to kill time. I'm busy all the time.'
Gurr is considered one of the most influential designers in theme park history. As Disneyland approaches its 70th anniversary this summer, ride vehicles he designed for the park in the 1950s and 60s are still popular favorites.
'I'm busy every day,' he says. 'I just love being interested in everything.' Walt Disney himself recruited Gurr soon after he graduated from ArtCenter College of Design to design a car for his new theme park in Anaheim and Gurr's Autopia, Monorail and submarines have been transporting us into lands of fantasy ever since. 'I have 124,000 followers on Instagram,' he says. 'That would fill a stadium someplace!'

‘Ballerina' Losing Opening Weekend Box Office Match To ‘Lilo & Stitch'

Ana de Armas in "From the World of John Wick: Ballerina." Ana de Armas and Keanu Reeves' From the World of John Wick: Ballerina is falling short in its quest to take the No. 1 spot from Lilo & Stitch at the weekend box office. Lilo & Stitch, of course, had a blockbuster opening over the four-day Memorial Day weekend box office from May 23-26 and fended off Karate Kid: Legends to hold on to its box office crown in its second-weekend frame from May 30-June 1. This weekend, Disney's live-action adaptation of the 2002 animated classic is continuing its domestic box office dominance against Ballerina, which is a prequel movie set during the events of 2019's John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Deadline is projecting that Lilo & Stitch is on track to earn $32 million to $34 million from 4,185 theaters through Sunday, while forecasting a $26 million to $30 million No. 2 debut for Ballerina, which is opening in 3,409 venues. Deadline's estimate for Ballerina falls within the range of a mid-week projection by Variety, which pegged a $28 million to $30 million opening frame, but comes up short of Box Office Pro's opening weekend forecast of $32 million to $40 million. Ballerina had a $90 million production budget with a prints and advertising budget of $45 million, Deadline reported. Although the character of John Wick is part of the film's formal title, Keanu Reeves plays a supporting role in Ballerina, in which Ian McShane, Anjelica Huston and the late Lance Reddick all reprise their roles from the John Wick franchise. Rated R, Ballerina also stars Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno and Norman Reedus. Ana de Armas and Keanu Reeves in "From the World of John Wick: Ballerina." While Ballerina is falling short of pre-release forecasts, its projected take of $26 million to $30 million is enough to create a healthy separation from Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Tom Cruise's latest— and potentially last — mission as Ethan Hunt is projected by Deadline to earn $14 million from 3,496 North American theaters through Sunday for a No. 3 finish this weekend after spending two weekends at No. 2. The Hollywood trade publication also projects a $9 million take for Karate Kid: Legends from 3,859 theaters domestically for the No. 4 spot and a $5.7 million take for The Phoenician Scheme from 1,678 venues for a fifth place finish. The latest comedy from director Wes Anderson, The Phoenician Scheme staged its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in the South of France in May and opened in limited release in six theaters on May 30. Note: This box office report will be updated throughout the weekend as new domestic and international numbers become available. The final numbers for this weekend's box office will come out on Monday.

The Baltimore Ravens' All-Pro running back received a special surprise from his favorite actor. The bet is on.

The Baltimore Ravens' All-Pro running back received a special surprise from his favorite actor. The bet is on. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Derrick Henry now has all the motivation he needs for the 2025 season. Advertisement Earlier this week, the Baltimore Ravens running back appeared on the Dan Patrick Show where he finished the interview saying he was a huge fan of actor Adam Sandler, who is a friend of Patrick's. The Hall of Fame radio voice offered Henry a bet - if he could surpass 2,000 rushing yards this season, he'll shoot Sandler a message and try to get Henry a role in his next movie. Patrick has followed up with his side of the agreement. And now so has Sandler. A video posted by his show's social media account shows Patrick make the initial call to "Sand-Man", receive a video response as requested, and Henry's reaction when he saw it for the first time on the practice field. "I love ya, congrats on everything baby," Sandler said. "2,000 yards plus this year gets you not only in the movie, but we have a nice dinner together ..." Advertisement Henry said with an ear-to-ear smile: "That's my dog!" He then thanked Patrick for - potentially - helping fulfill a dream of working with his favorite actor. The Ravens star was just 79 yards short of eclipsing the momentous 2,000 mark last season - something he has already done once in his career (2,027 yards in 2020 with the Tennessee Titans). Including Henry, only nine players have ever rushed for 2,000 yards in a season. But nobody has ever done it twice. "Say no more. Remember that now. The bet is on. No pressure at all," Henry said after Patrick's first mention of the proposal. Now it's official. Advertisement Lights, camera, action.
