The
Delhi Development Authority
(DDA) initiated a demolition drive the national capital's Delhi
Ashok Vihar
and Wazirpur on Monday, with police security.
"A demolition drive is ongoing in Ashok Vihar. About 250 police officers are deployed there," stated DCP (Northwest) Bhisham Singh.
A Special Task Force (STF) unit was deployed at Ashok Vihar's Jailorwala Bagh area on Monday morning with excavators to conduct the clearance operation. More than 200 residences built on government property were scheduled to be demolished.
Furthermore, there was a parallel operation near Wazirpur's railway line to clear unauthorised structures.
"Two companies of paramilitary force, along with Delhi Police personnel, are present on the spot to ensure that law and order is not breached," confirmed a senior police officer.
Live Events
This operation marks the second clearance activity in the area this month.
Following the previous operation on June 2, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated, "If a railway line is encroached and there is an accident, who will be responsible?"
Demolition drives in Kalkaji, Madarsi Camp
Earlier this month, DDA undertook a demolition drive at Bhoomihin Camp, located in Kalkaji area following directions from the High Court on June 11.
The DDA had earlier issued an official notice to all residents of Bhoomihin Camp, directing them to vacate their premises in view of the demolition of illegal huts,.
Residents were given three days, June 8, 9 and 10 to vacate their huts. The notice stated that failure to comply will lead to demolition action by the authorities.
The operation was carried out to resolve the flooding issues caused by the narrowed drain, which obstructs water flow during heavy rains.
On June 1, a demolition drive at Madrasi camp in Jangpura, South East Delhi, was conducted by the authorities, on the orders of the Delhi High Court, to clear encroachments in the area along the Barapulla drain.
Stay on Batla House demolition drive
On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court granted an interim stay on the demolition of six properties in the Batla House area of Okhla in South East Delhi. Residents of these properties have challenged the notices issued by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) in May 2025.
Petitioners claimed that out of these six properties, some are outside Khasra Number 279, whiddle others are within this Khasra. Residents of these properties said that their properties are covered within the PM Uday Scheme.
In an order passed on Monday, Justice Tejas Karia ordered to maintain the status quo till the next date of hearing.
Meanwhile, the High Court has issued notice to the DDA and sought a response within four weeks. Petitions are to be heard on July 10 before roster bench.

BJP, Trinamool wage war of words over West Bengal's revised OBC list

The Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) engaged in a bitter war of words on Wednesday (June 18, 2025) over a new list of other backward class (OBC) communities in West Bengal. Also Read | More West Bengal migrants pushed into Bangladesh, repatriated after State's intervention This comes a day after the Calcutta High Court ordered an interim stay on the State government's notification of a new OBC list. In May 2024, the High Court had cancelled OBC reservations awarded to 77 categories, citing a lack of legislative policy within the 2012 scheme to classify any group as OBC. In June this year, the State government tabled a revised list. The Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, along with BJP MLAs, distributed sweets outside the State Legislative Assembly premises in Kolkata on Wednesday, chanting slogans such as: 'OBC bill atke gelo (OBC bill got stayed)', and 'Muslim-der OBC korte parlo na (They could not classify Muslims as OBCs)'. 'Snatching rights of Hindu OBCs' 'One of the reasons why [West Bengal Chief Minister] Mamata Banerjee looks so disturbed today is yesterday's stay order on the OBC list. She knows that 17% of Hindu OBCs have been left out. She tried to snatch their rights. On the other hand, she tried to fool nearly two crore Muslims. She thought she could give them OBC certificates like a 'lollipop' when she could not give them employment, education, and healthcare,' Mr. Adhikari said. He added that the Chief Minister has 'spelt doom' for the 'hard-working Muslims who had dreams of becoming doctors, engineers, or civil servants as general category applicants.' 'Cannot erase history' Later in the day, Ms. Banerjee accused the BJP and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) of not wanting the OBC Bill to pass. 'This is for poor people, for the socially and economically backward class. We want reservations to stay for the Scheduled Castes and tribal people. But how can we snatch the rights of the 33% of people who have been here since Partition? Do you not want to help build them as people? 60 castes in the list were non-Muslims. You people burn up when you see Muslims… How can we erase history?' Ms. Banerjee asked. List prepared by OBC Commission She added that the Calcutta High Court's order is an interim stay and not a judgment, and that the government's legal team is studying it. 'The government did not prepare the list; it was prepared by the OBC [Commission]. A former senior justice of the Calcutta High Court is part of that. We had done everything to adhere to the High Court's rules,' the Chief Minister claimed. The West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes was constituted in 1993 to 'examine requests for inclusion of any class of citizens as a backward class in the lists and hear complaints of over-inclusion or under-inclusion of any backward class in such lists,' according to its website.

Bengaluru: BMTC plans non-AC express bus service with fewer stops to cut commute time

In a bid to offer faster public transport options for long-distance commuters, the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is preparing to roll out a fleet of non-air-conditioned express buses that will make fewer stops and take advantage of city flyovers to shorten travel times, Moneycontrol reported. Unlike regular non-AC buses, the upcoming service, likely to be launched under a new brand, will come with slightly higher fares, the report further added. However, it will still accommodate women passengers under the state's Shakti scheme, which provides free bus travel to women across Karnataka. 'We are working on route plans for these express services. Take Chikkaballapur, for instance, we already operate buses on that route, but the journey takes longer due to too many halts. These new buses will skip low-ridership stops and stick to major points, using flyovers where possible,' a senior BMTC official was quoted as saying by Moneycontrol. Areas like Attibele, Harohalli, Devanahalli, and Nelamangala are also under consideration for these services, based on emerging demand and ongoing analysis of passenger data. (Also Read: Bengaluru civic body engineer caught red-handed taking ₹10 lakh bribe, arrested) The BMTC move comes after app-based bike taxi services came to a grinding halt across Karnataka on Monday after the state's transport department enforced a High Court directive suspending their operations. Major ride-hailing platforms like Ola, Uber, and Rapido removed the bike taxi option from their apps, following the latest legal setback. The move came after a division bench of the Karnataka High Court declined to stay a previous order that had suspended such services in the state. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy confirmed that aggregators are now bound to follow the court's ruling. 'Three months ago, the court ruled that bike taxis are illegal. It initially gave six weeks, and then another six weeks on request. Now that 12 weeks have passed, the aggregators must follow the High Court order,' he told PTI. The division bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice V Kameshwar Rao and Justice Sreenivas Harish Kumar, was hearing appeals filed by Uber India Systems Pvt Ltd, ANI Technologies Pvt Ltd (which runs Ola), and Roppen Transportation Services Pvt Ltd (which operates Rapido), among others. The bench refused to intervene, effectively putting a pause on all bike taxi services in the state. The crackdown has sparked concern among daily commuters and gig workers, many of whom relied on bike taxis as a faster, affordable mode of transport or source of livelihood. (With agency inputs)

Calcutta HC orders resumption of MGNREGA in Bengal from August 1 with special conditions

The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday ordered the Centre to resume the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme in West Bengal from August 1, 2025, after nearly three years of suspension. The division bench, led by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Chaitali Chatterjee (Das), allowed the Centre to impose special conditions, restrictions, and regulations—measures not applied in other states—to prevent any recurrence of irregularities during the scheme's rollout in West Bengal. The court acknowledged that the Centre had identified certain irregularities in the disbursement of wages under MGNREGA in the state. It noted that action had already been taken, recoveries made, and the funds secured in the state nodal agency's bank account. The bench emphasised that while investigations into past misconduct would continue, the primary focus now is on ensuring the scheme's effective and corruption-free implementation going forward. Chief Justice Sivagnanam remarked, 'At this juncture, the court is concerned about the implementation of the scheme in West Bengal prospectively.' He added, 'The scheme of the Act does not envisage a situation where the scheme would be put to cold storage for eternity.' The court further stated that the Centre holds sufficient powers to inquire into any irregularities or illegalities related to wage disbursement but stressed the importance of drawing a clear line between past actions and future execution. The bench concluded that the directive to restart MGNREGA in West Bengal is 'in public interest' and aligns with the purpose for which the central legislation was enacted. It also authorised the authorities overseeing the scheme to impose necessary safeguards to ensure that the irregularities which occurred three years ago do not recur. This ruling comes amid ongoing tensions between the West Bengal state government and the Centre, with accusations of fund withholding and corruption allegations having stalled the scheme's implementation since 2022. The High Court's order aims to restore the 100-day job guarantee programme, vital for rural employment and livelihood in the state.
