JOCKEY TO FOLLOW
Superstar apprentice JETT NEWMAN can rack up some points in the TAB Jockeys Challenge (before scratchings).
INSIDE MAIL - LISMORE
MISS UCHITEL (2) was born and raced at Gilgai Farm in Victoria. In fact. she has the same 'brand' as another Gilgai graduate in Black Caviar. To add to her value, Miss Uchitel is a daughter of the Tasmanian stakes-winner, Spinning Jenny. Ultra-consistent mare who shapes well here again. Stablemate OUR SILVER LININGS (1) really ate into the margin first-up at the Gold Coast. Has drawn well and gets 2kg off for superstar apprentice, Jett Newman. A NOTION (5) has done enough to be respected and considered.
Bet: Miss Uchitel to win

RACE 2: XXXX Gold Mdn Plate
BARRON (1) is a cleverly-named son of a mare called White House Lady. Granted, the equine Barron hasn't been able to trump his rivals in 33 starts no less but he has placed 13 times and occasionally in rather good maiden company. He'll get there sooner rather than later. HAYLEY'S ROCKET (6) had trialled well behind a good horse then came out and ran a slashing debut behind a handful of good horses in that 1106m Super Maiden on the South Grafton Cup undercard. Go well.
Bet: Barron each-way, quinella 1, 6
â– â– â– â– â–
TORQUE TI AMO (2) is a Matthew Dunn-trained filly by Castelvecchio which goes a long way to accounting for why she seems to have such a powerful finishing burst. We saw that in plain view when she resumed at Grafton in the Super Maiden where she was getting ever closer to the winner, namely her handy stablemate, Gaylord. SASKATOON BERRY (12) has gone 29 starts without a win but she has placed nine times. She deserves one but has run into a potentially above average horse.
Bet: Torque Ti Amo to win, exacta 2 to beat 12
â– â– â– â– â–
RACE 4: Lismore Floor Coverings Mdn Plate
NATIONAL GOAL (7) is trained by Peter Robl who will be in Darwin in 11 days' time striving for back-to-back Cups with last year's winner, Hadoukan. National Goal was in the market but never in the race first-up, taken back from a wide gate. Has trialled well since and cops a much more favourable gate today. LET'S DO IT AGAIN (4) hasn't fared as well in the barrier stakes but gets Ben Looker to assist and is a horse on an upward trajectory. BETTER BELIEVE IT (9), ANDROSS (1) and KEMAL (3) have claims.
Bet: National Goal each-way
â– â– â– â– â–
WRITTEN FAME (1) is part of the Darby Bloodstock string. They only paid $10,000 for him at the HTBA Yearling Sale and this Matthew Dunn-trained gelding has won $76,025 in 14 starts with the promise of more to come. Written Fame has the capacity to go on all surfaces and he is most effective circa this trip. Nice alley, has a 2kg claim too. WESTERLY (6) hasn't been seen since winning at Coffs Harbour on December 14 hence the market is the guide. RYLOV (3) is in the mix and by the way, look at his damline; Rhema, Mannington, Bint Marscay, Eau D'Etoile.
Bet: Written Fame to win
â– â– â– â– â–
GOT THE SMARTS (4) was bred at Gooree and hails from one of their most prized families of which they have had a few. Long story short, she is by Gooree's own Smart Missile, is also a half-sister to Tactical Advantage and from the same family as the iron horse, Desert War. Got The Smarts is a tidy little resume; super reliable and good enough to win better races. That said, MOFEED (1) is a genuine obstacle. He too has done by far more good than bad in his nine starts. DIZZY DEE (7) and NO RAGRETS (5) are players.
Bet: Got The Smarts to win
â– â– â– â– â–
SO YOU CAN TORQUE (3) was a $20,000 bargain at the 2022 HTBA Yearling Sale. What a pedigree. He is by 10-time Group 1 winner So You Think out of a half-sister to the Melbourne Cup winner, Vow And Declare. It stands to reason then that this Matthew Dunn-trained racehorse is only going to get better as time goes by and he's already done some good things. GAVIN (2) is a chance (if he comes). CHAMPONNET (1), another Dunn runner, has drawn wide but the form reads well. Ditto, in fact double that, for YOUCOMPLETEME (4).
Bet: So You Can Torque to win
â– â– â– â– â–
INSINUATE (2) was a $510,000 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling sale buy. Why? Well for starters, she is by the four-time Champion Sire Snitzel then there is the fact that her dam won the Wellington Boot. Not just any Boot winner, Sin Sin Sin, was her name and she is now known as the mother of Yes Yes Yes. Matthew Dunn has got this filly flying and box 2 with Jett Newman only seals the deal. HOTZINO (5) is a chance (if he comes). Outside of him, maybe the other Dunn runners; CALVARY (4) and LUCKY NEKO (9) are the 'threats' to Insinuate.
Bet: Insinuate to win
BEST BET

Castlevecchio filly who rattled home first-up in a Super Maiden. Extra trip suits.

Glamour couple Jordan De Goey, Aisha Jade McKinnon drop ‘surprise' life update

Collingwood forward Jordan De Goey and his former reality TV star girlfriend Aisha Jade McKinnon have announced the 'surprise' news they are expecting a baby girl. De Goey, 29, has been held to just five games for the Pies in an injury-plagued 2025 season, although he is in line for an AFL return this weekend. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Join now and get your first month for just $1. New Zealander McKinnon, who found fame as a contestant on Big Brother and is now a fashion designer and influencer, met the footy bad boy in early 2024 after linking up on Instagram. They went public with their romance at Collingwood's best and fairest awards last year and have since bought a farm together. McKinnon's Instagram bio says 'Fashion, Beauty and little Farm life' and the celebrity couple used that platform to announce their happy news. 'In the midst of our changing lives we were blessed with the greatest surprise of them all,' they captioned a joint post on Sunday. 'Baby girl coming soon.' The post featured an ultrasound, a sweet photo of De Goey holding McKinnon's stomach and a video that appears to show the footy star getting a gender reveal gift from his partner (see below). The announcement has received more than 35,000 likes and over 800 comments, including a number from De Goey's Collingwood teammates. 'Unreal! Congrats to both of you,' wrote Josh Daicos. Model and Daicos' partner Annalise Dalins added: 'The best news!! Congratulations you two! Sending (so much) love.' Oleg Markov and Isaac Quaynor both wrote: 'Congrats guys.' Musician Bec Wilcock gushed: 'This makes me so happy!!! Bring in the girl squad.' McKinnon told the Herald Sun last year the couple have similar interests and are loving working on their farm about an hour outside Melbourne. 'He's really lovely. We definitely value our privacy, we connected on that, and we both have unique jobs and support each other,'' she said. 'We were like pen pals until we met. We're getting our hands dirty at the farm transforming it and having fun.' De Goey has played 176 games for the Pies, including the 2023 premiership, but hasn't featured since round eight due to an Achilles injury. He was then concussed at training in a collision with Brayden Maynard, setting back his return further, but he turned out in the VFL last weekend and is in line for a senior recall. Pick No. 5 in the 2014 national draft, De Goey has had a series of alcohol and violence related issues in the past, including an arrest in New York in 2021 over an alleged nightclub assault.

Melbourne's Steven May fails at appeal to get rough conduct suspension for clash with Francis Evans overturned

Star defender Steven May will still miss Melbourne's next two games after the club's bid to overturn his rough conduct suspension was rejected by the AFL appeals board. May was initially handed a three-match ban by the tribunal for rough conduct over the high-speed collision in the Demons' July 19 loss to Carlton that left Blues forward Francis Evans with concussion, a broken nose and a missing tooth. The All Australian defender maintained the ball was always his focus. May, who missed the Demons' demoralising loss to St Kilda on Sunday with his own concussion, will be suspended for games against West Coast and the Western Bulldogs. He was not involved in Monday night's appeal hearing. The Demons appealed on the basis the tribunal made an error of law and that no tribunal acting reasonably could have come to the decision it did. Melbourne's case, which was presented over more than an hour, hinged on the contention that no reasonable tribunal would expect a player to anticipate the trajectory of the ball's bounce. Melbourne noted after a handball went over Evans' head, the ball bounced four times. The first three bounces went away from the Carlton player, before the fourth took the ball into his hands, when May made contact. Jack Rush, acting for the Demons, contended the tribunal had put a "sense of perfection on the reasonable player" in expecting May to anticipate the ball's trajectory. Melbourne also contended that the tribunal noting Evans had made a movement to avoid contact, while not taking into account May had extended his left leg in an attempt to also slow down, was "the height of procedural unfairness" and demonstrated "unreasonableness". AFL representative Nick Pane quickly contended the tribunal's finding was not unreasonable before the appeals board of Stephen Jurica, Wayne Henwood and chair Will Houghton deliberated for 14 minutes. In rejecting Melbourne's appeal, Houghton said the board was satisfied May understood the case being put forward against him and he had every opportunity to put forward his own case. He concluded there was no lack of procedural fairness and no unreasonableness in the tribunal's decision. Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin had said on Sunday that May was "devastated and shattered" by the tribunal's decision, having believed he had done the right thing in attacking the ball. Goodwin also predicted the case would shape the way players approach contests in future. He believed players would adapt with the more information they get from the AFL about how they are required to act in certain scenarios. AAP

West Coast Eagles confirm Harley Reid's season over after western derby ankle injury

Harley Reid's second AFL season has ended four games early, with the West Coast Eagles confirming their rising star will miss the final month with an ankle injury. Reid was helped off the field late in Saturday's 49-point loss to Fremantle after he injured his ankle in a tackle. He had kicked two goals. Coach Andrew McQualter said after the game the 20-year-old would be sent for scans. They have revealed he suffered a syndesmosis injury, often referred to as a "high ankle sprain". "Harley Reid got his foot caught up in a tackle and has a low-grade syndesmosis injury," Eagles fitness boss Mat Inness said. "Despite being quite a low-grade injury, due to the time of season, we have ruled him out for the season." The news comes amid intense speculation in AFL circles about the long-term playing future of the highly regarded Reid, who was the AFL's number one draft pick in 2023, and whether he will return home to his native Victoria. The loss of Reid is not the only bad news for West Coast, who are languishing at the bottom of the AFL ladder with just one win for the year. Scans have also confirmed their top draft pick last year, Bo Allan, has played his last game for 2025 as well. Allan, who played in a WAFL premiership with Peel Thunder last year, has also suffered a syndesmosis injury. "Like Harley, Bo Allan got his foot caught up in a tackle at training on Thursday and suffered a low-grade syndesmosis injury," Inness said. "Once again, due to the time of the year, this will rule him out for the season." Allan, 19, managed six appearances in his first season. There was better news for key defender Harry Edwards, who was withdrawn from the Fremantle game after experiencing hamstring tightness during the warm-up. Inness said the club was hopeful Edwards would be available for this weekend's game against Melbourne.
