The initiative, part of the RM6 million allocation by the Sabah State Government, targets around 20,000 Bumiputera students enrolled in local institutions. State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun, who officiated the event at UiTM's Dewan Al-Bukhari, said the aid reflects the government's commitment to human capital development. 'Education is the foundation for shaping a knowledgeable, capable, and ethical future generation. The State Government is serious about ensuring no Sabahan is left behind,' he said. Masidi added that Sentosa is one of 13 education-related programmes introduced this year under a RM75.5 million allocation, which also includes school upgrades, student excellence awards, and flight ticket subsidies. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Pepper grower now harvests 600kg; 10 staff
Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 Text Size: A site visit to Maswan's farm. Inset: Maswan. KUNAK: A local pepper entrepreneur has turned his small-scale farming venture into a thriving business, creating jobs and boosting the community's economy through the Sejati Madani grant he received last December. With determination and drive to improve himself, 36-year-old Maswan Sulad began planting peppers on a modest plot but now operates a farm capable of producing up to 600 kilogrammes. 'I am very grateful to have been selected for the Sejati Madani programme as it has allowed me to expand the business and provide job opportunities for the community,' he said during the Kunak-level Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) 2025 programme at the District's Youth Arena. Initially assisted only by family members, Maswan now employs 10 workers who help produce his signature product, Sambal Barakunak. The entire process – from harvesting fresh chillies to processing and packaging – is handled by his team. He also supplies fresh peppers to local markets and the Tawau Central Market, where weekly demand is high. With the grant, Maswan has expanded his pepper farm, boosting yields to between 70 and 80 kilogrammes at a time. A fan of spicy food himself, he said peppers are a popular ingredient but can be challenging to grow due to pests, diseases and unpredictable weather. To overcome these issues, he adopted fertigation technology, which automates the delivery of water and fertiliser, with guidance from the State Agriculture Department and local farmers. He has also taken the initiative to learn both physical and online marketing to secure a place for his products in the market. Maswan also urged young people to step out of their comfort zones. 'If we do not try today, then when?' he said. Meanwhile, as the Madani Community Leader for Kampung Lormalong, he said residents have been actively decorating their village for the National Month, with thousands of flags lining the roads. 'This is the time for us to raise the flag and replace old ones as a sign of love for our country,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? He said the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government had laid out a clear development roadmap for the state, including Kinabatangan, through the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) direction. The plan covers all aspects of growth, from strengthening the economy and education to improving community wellbeing, supported by achievements in industry, tourism and agriculture. Hajiji highlighted various state initiatives, including monthly aid of RM300 for a year to more than 10,000 low-income residents, and an increase in Rumah Mesra SMJ units to 40 for each state constituency, including Lamag and Sukau. He said the state government has also distributed 100 dialysis machines to government hospitals and clinics to provide free treatment for kidney patients. Axis-REIT completes first RM300mil senior sukuk issuance
KUALA LUMPUR: Axis Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) Managers Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of RHB Trustees Bhd, has completed its first issuance of RM300 million senior Islamic medium term notes (senior sukuk) under its RM3 billion Islamic notes issuance programme. The company said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia today that the senior sukuk is rated AA2(s) by RAM Rating Services Bhd and has a tenure of 10 years with a fixed profit rate of 4.0 per cent per annum, payable semi-annually in arrears. With this senior sukuk issuance, Axis-REIT's fixed rate financing will be expected to increase from 48 per cent to 65 per cent. "Proceeds raised from the senior sukuk will be utilised to finance capital expenditure including development expenditure, working capital requirements, general corporate purposes and refinancing of existing Islamic financings or future Islamic financing of Axis-REIT," the company said. Commenting on the milestone, Axis REIT chief executive officer and executive director Leong Kit May said this issuance marks a significant step in diversifying its funding sources and supporting its growth ambitions. "The proceeds will serve as a war chest for us to seize strategic opportunities, acquire income-accretive assets and further strengthen our balance sheet for long-term sustainability," she said.
