Like most of TCL's models, it's also built on Google TV, netting you access to all the best streaming apps, and comes equipped with a range of gaming features that make it stand out. VRR is the big ticket item, but the QM8K can also play games up to 288Hz when playing in 1080p. Price check: Best Buy @ $1,599
We were stunned with the results for the TCL QM8K, especially against the competition. It's one of TCL's most advanced Mini-LED TVs to date, exemplified by its incredible color performance, motion processing, and higher brightness specs. In our review of the TCL QM8K, we gave it a recommended score at four stars, highlighting these advancements in tandem with its exceptional gaming prowess.
One thing that allows the QM8K to stand out is its leveraging of Google TV. That means it comes equipped with some of the best streaming services and, most importantly, tons of free content. Google's always adding new shows and channels to its lineup, and TCL itself just added a more free content with a partnership with AMC.
What excited me most about the QM8K was its gaming features. While it might skimp out on the coveted 165Hz refresh rate that other rivals are taking up in an effort to wrangle more gamers, including LG and Hisense, it does have a neat feature that allows it to hit 288Hz in 1080p. It does this via VRR, and it's a sick feature if you're a PC gamer, but don't expect to hit those highs on a Nintendo Switch 2.
Even with our enthusiasm, the TCL QM8K isn't without some mishaps. It's biggest blunder is its rather middling audio, which is to be expected with most TVs these days and why we always recommend pairing them up with one of the best soundbars. The neat thing is the QM8K does have Dolby Atmos support and offers an ATSC 3.0 tuner, netting you access to Nextgen TV.
But if the QM8K isn't quite what you're looking for in a new display and want something a little on the cheaper side, might I recommend this Panasonic Mini-LED TV from 2024. It's also a four-star-recommend from us and is loaded with tons of features at just $500!

Amazon introduces a more affordable color screen Kindle
Amazon is making its color screen Kindle more affordable. Following the launch of the Kindle Colorsoft last year, the retailer on Thursday introduced a lower-cost version of the normally $279.99 device. The new device offers a $30 discount for 16GB of storage instead of 32GB, bringing the cost down to $249.99. A kids edition is also now available. The original 7-inch Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition was designed to bring a more engaging visual experience to the popular Kindle e-reader, ideal for digitally browsing comics and other graphic novels or highlighting in different colors. The device offered an adjustable, glare-free display with up to eight weeks of battery life, and it even allows users to invert the black text and white background of pages for those who prefer a dark mode-like experience. The new 16GB model also features the high-contrast Colorsoft display of the original, the adjustable warm light, battery life, fast page turns, and more. Plus, it includes three months of Kindle Unlimited, the subscription offering access to over 4 million e-books. However, it won't include the auto-adjusting front light, wireless charging, or the larger storage space of the Signature Edition. The Kindle Colorsoft Kids ships with an illustrated cover, a two-year guarantee, and a year of the Amazon Kids+ subscription offering access to books, games, videos, apps, and more. Amazon launches a cheaper color Kindle and its first model for kids
TL;DR Amazon has launched a cheaper Kindle Colorsoft 16GB and a new Kindle Colorsoft Kids model. The Kids version includes a year of Amazon Kids Plus, a colorful case, and parental controls. Both devices use the same color screen as last year's model, which we didn't love. Amazon is still betting on color E-Ink, even if it had a somewhat rocky start last year. The company just added two more devices to its Kindle Colorsoft lineup: a cheaper 16GB version and a new Kindle Colorsoft Kids. Both are available starting today. As outlined in Amazon's press release, the 16GB Colorsoft costs $249.99, shaving $30 off the Signature Edition from last year by dropping the wireless charging and cutting the storage in half. Otherwise, it's the same device, complete with the same color screen, adjustable warm light, and ability to highlight text in different colors. The new Kids version is the first color Kindle aimed at younger readers. It's priced at $269.99 and includes a year of Amazon Kids Plus, a colorful protective case, and Amazon's usual suite of parental controls. Amazon says kids who read comics and graphic novels on Kindle spend nearly 50% more time reading than average, so this move makes sense. Both models use the same Colorsoft display that debuted last year. At the time, Amazon's first color Kindle was met with some skepticism from us. We found the display resolution frustrating, which drops to 150ppi in color mode, as well as the lack of any real note-taking features. Some buyers also reported screen tint issues that led to delays and a promised software fix. Amazon hasn't changed the hardware here, but it's clearly hoping these new additions will broaden the appeal, either to those who didn't want to spend $280 for the Signature Edition or to families looking for a kid-friendly option.
