Television broadcasting and production company AMC Networks (NASDAQ:AMCX) fell short of the market's revenue expectations in Q1 CY2025, with sales falling 6.9% year on year to $555.2 million. Its non-GAAP profit of $0.52 per share was 35.5% below analysts' consensus estimates.

Chief Executive Officer Kristin Dolan said: "We continue to execute on our core strengths as we navigate the changing world of media. During the first quarter we delivered high-quality premium programming to our audiences, launched ad-supported AMC+ on Charter and generated $94 million of free cash flow.(1) We remain nimble and opportunistic in broadly distributing our sought-after content across all available platforms to build value for our partners, viewers and shareholders."
Originally the joint-venture of four cable television companies, AMC Networks (NASDAQ:AMCX) is a broadcaster producing a diverse range of television shows and movies.
A company's long-term sales performance is one signal of its overall quality. Any business can put up a good quarter or two, but many enduring ones grow for years. AMC Networks's demand was weak over the last five years as its sales fell at a 4.6% annual rate. This wasn't a great result and suggests it's a low quality business.
Long-term growth is the most important, but within consumer discretionary, product cycles are short and revenue can be hit-driven due to rapidly changing trends and consumer preferences. AMC Networks's recent performance shows its demand remained suppressed as its revenue has declined by 12.4% annually over the last two years.
AMC Networks also breaks out the revenue for its most important segments, Affiliate and Advertising, which are 28.1% and 21.4% of revenue. Over the last two years, AMC Networks's Affiliate revenue (retransmission and licensing fees) averaged 13.2% year-on-year declines while its Advertising revenue (marketing services) averaged 14.9% declines.
This quarter, AMC Networks missed Wall Street's estimates and reported a rather uninspiring 6.9% year-on-year revenue decline, generating $555.2 million of revenue.
Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to decline by 3.8% over the next 12 months. While this projection is better than its two-year trend, it's tough to feel optimistic about a company facing demand difficulties.

Operating margin is a key measure of profitability. Think of it as net income - the bottom line - excluding the impact of taxes and interest on debt, which are less connected to business fundamentals.
AMC Networks's operating margin has been trending down over the last 12 months and averaged 4.8% over the last two years. The company's profitability was mediocre for a consumer discretionary business and shows it couldn't pass its higher operating expenses onto its customers.
In Q1, AMC Networks generated an operating profit margin of 11.6%, down 6.9 percentage points year on year. This contraction shows it was less efficient because its expenses increased relative to its revenue.
We track the long-term change in earnings per share (EPS) for the same reason as long-term revenue growth. Compared to revenue, however, EPS highlights whether a company's growth is profitable.
Sadly for AMC Networks, its EPS declined by 15.3% annually over the last five years, more than its revenue. This tells us the company struggled because its fixed cost base made it difficult to adjust to shrinking demand.
In Q1, AMC Networks reported EPS at $0.52, down from $1.16 in the same quarter last year. This print missed analysts' estimates. Over the next 12 months, Wall Street expects AMC Networks's full-year EPS of $3.54 to shrink by 13.3%.
We struggled to find many positives in these results as its revenue, EPS, and EBITDA fell short of Wall Street's estimates. Overall, this quarter could have been better. The stock remained flat at $6.19 immediately after reporting.

The two sides are still hammering out terms of the complex aircraft sale, including the types and volume of jet models and delivery timetables, according to one of the people, who asked not to be identified discussing confidential matters. Chinese officials have already started consulting domestic airlines about how many Boeing aircraft they'll need, the people said. The transaction taking shape is similar in scope to the order for as many as 500 jets that China's central planners have struck with Airbus SE, but haven't yet announced, they added. The Boeing order is expected to be the centerpiece of a trade agreement that would benefit both Trump and China's President Xi Jinping, the culmination of long-running and sometimes contentious negotiations. The nation's leaders were close to a similar announcement in 2023, but then-President Joe Biden and Xi left a San Francisco summit without consummating an aircraft sale. Complicating matters for Boeing is a leadership void in China. Alvin Liu, its top executive in China and a fluent Mandarin-speaker with extensive government contacts, left the company in recent weeks. Carol Shen has been named interim president of Boeing China, said people familiar with the matter. Boeing declined to comment on any potential deal or management changes. Shares of the US planemaker advanced less than 1% in New York on Thursday following Bloomberg's report, as most members of the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined. The stock had risen 27% this year amid a turnaround under Chief Executive Officer Kelly Ortberg. Aircraft orders for Boeing have figured large in US diplomacy since Trump returned to the White House in January, with nations touting new, tentative and existing deals for airplanes, which are as expensive as skyscrapers, to narrow trade imbalances with the US. The US and China have engaged in several rounds of talks since de-escalating tit-for-tat tariffs that soared to as high as 145%, but have yet to reach a final trade deal. Earlier in the summer, Xi, in a phone call, invited Trump to China at an unspecified date. One opportunity for the pair to meet is in late October, ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in South Korea. For China, the deal would secure aircraft delivery slots that are hard to come by at both Boeing and Airbus, which are largely sold out into the 2030s. The world's second largest aviation market is expected to more than double its commercial fleet to 9,755 airplanes over the next 20 years, by Boeing's estimation, far more than China's homegrown planemaker Comac could manufacture. While Boeing slots are scarce, the company likely has some flexibility in its delivery schedule to accommodate strategic customers, Jefferies analyst Sheila Kahyaoglu said in a research note. The country's top economic planning agency, the National Development and Reform Commission, recently sought input from Chinese carriers about how many jets they want, one of the people said. Talks centered on the 737 Max series of aircraft, Boeing's popular single-aisle jet, in a sign Beijing is laying the groundwork for a major order. Boeing's last Chinese deal was unveiled in November 2017 during Trump's first state visit to China. The deal amounted to orders and commitments for 300 single-aisle and twin-aisle planes valued at $37 billion at the time. The next year, Boeing's China deliveries peaked, when a quarter of its jets ended up in the mainland. Airbus has dominated sales and deliveries to China since 2019, when the nation's regulators were the first to ground the 737 Max after two fatal accidents. Boeing has notched only 30 orders with Chinese carriers and leasing companies since the start of 2019, according to the company's website. In an interview with Bloomberg in January, CEO Ortberg was optimistic that years of talks with Beijing would finally pay off. Walmart raises guidance despite EPS miss, tariffs weighing

Walmart still managed to sprint past nearly everyone else despite profits falling this quarter and a rare miss on earnings-per-share, snapping a 12-quarter winning streak. But revenue rose, guidance climbed, and the retail giant once again reminded Wall Street that it's better at surviving storms than celebrating streaks. Adjusted earnings came in at 68 cents, short of the 73 cents analysts expected, sending the stock down about 3% in premarket trading. But revenue jumped nearly 5% to $177.4 billion, U.S. comparable sales rose 4.6%, and Walmart raised its full-year forecast for both sales and profit. The picture was less a stumble than a reminder of what makes the company hard to knock over: When profit is pressured by tariffs, labor costs, or insurance claims, Walmart has multiple levers to pull — and it's not shy about using them. CEO Doug McMillon acknowledged that tariffs are steadily increasing costs and that the cumulative effect of higher costs is beginning to impact shopping patterns. He said, 'As we replenish inventory at post-tariff price levels, we've continued to see our costs increase each week, which we expect will continue into the third and fourth quarters.' But if tariffs were the headwind, Walmart's answer was the same tailwind it has relied on for decades: everyday low prices. 'With regard to our U.S. pricing decisions, given tariff-related cost pressures, we're doing what we said we would do,' McMillon told investors. 'We're keeping our prices as low as we can for as long as we can.' This quarter, his answer — and the company's — was to lean into the brand's oldest promise: low prices. In practice, that meant 7,400 'Rollback' discounts during the quarter, a not-so-subtle reminder to shoppers that Walmart intends to be the last place inflation shows up. 'Shoppers for the past few years have spent somewhat cautiously, leaning toward needs over wants, but tariff-related price increases have caused middle- and low-income shoppers to rein in their spending even more,' McMillon told analysts. The pattern is clear: smaller baskets, sharper focus on value, and a consumer leaning harder into Walmart's core strengths. Most retailers would see that as a warning flare. Walmart is treating it as a competitive weapon. Its scale allows it to swallow some of the added costs and still plaster those 'Rollback' tags across aisles, daring rivals to keep up. Groceries, memberships, and ads buffer margins, letting Walmart absorb blows others can't. Ahead of the earnings report, Jefferies' Corey Tarlowe described those share gains as 'durable momentum,' pointing out that tariffs may nick profits but also accelerate the company's ability to pull traffic away from mid-tier competitors. But those rollbacks weren't a magic trick. Groceries and health products carried the quarter, providing steady traffic while more discretionary categories lagged. Membership income climbed more than 5%, helping pad recurring revenue. E-commerce surged 26% in the U.S. and 25% globally, with store-fulfilled delivery now accounting for nearly half of the company's growth. Advertising revenue — the kind of high-margin side hustle that most retailers dream about — jumped 46% worldwide. Chief financial officer John Rainey described the quarter as one of quiet share gains. 'We have seen growth across all income cohorts in the quarter,' he said, stressing that inventory levels remain healthy enough to keep the company nimble in a shifting economy. Analysts largely sided with management's framing. JPMorgan said the report doesn't fundamentally change its positive outlook on the stock. Wall Street wants to know how long Walmart can keep absorbing costs before it feels the pinch, yet the stock largely remains rated a 'Buy.' With analysts calling out its pricing power, Walmart has turned tariffs into both a moat and a marketing message; higher costs may be a storm, but it's one the company seems built to weather better than anyone else. The quarter may have ended Walmart's EPS streak, but it didn't change the story. The contrast with rivals only sharpens that point. Target, once seen as Walmart's trendier twin, has been struggling with slower foot traffic and tariff exposure in apparel and home goods. Home Depot and Lowe's are contending with stalled home-improvement spending . Even Costco, whose membership model is its shield, has seen sales growth flatten as households stretch their budgets. What ties the sector together is a pivot to more resilient revenue streams: loyalty programs, advertising, and delivery services. But where others are experimenting, Walmart is scaling. With more than 90% of U.S. households shopping at its stores each year, the company has a platform that can turn side bets into profit engines. Its ad business now looks less like a pilot project and more like a media arm. Its e-commerce growth suggests it's no longer just chasing Amazon but carving out a different model, with stores doubling as fulfillment hubs and groceries anchoring digital loyalty. That's why the market's fixation on the earnings miss may seem out of step with the substance of the quarter. Profits slipped. But sales rose, forecasts climbed, customers kept coming, and Walmart kept widening the gap with peers. For most retailers, a 3% dip in premarket trading would sting. For Walmart, it was almost comic relief — a reminder that even when it trips, it keeps outpacing the field. While he liked the idea, he had reservations. 'He didn't agree with the valuation of the company,' stated insurance and finance expert at Melanie Musson. 'He saw the possibility of negatives, like pushback from the taxi industry, instead of the complete disruption that Uber would cause.' Today, Uber is valued at roughly $187 billion. 'When you're trying to disrupt, just bust through the doors and deal with regulatory issues later,' Cuban has since said. In other words, it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. Cuban learned it's better to take a risk on a good idea rather than getting bogged down by all the potential obstacles. Misusing Credit Cards Back in the day, Cuban played fast and loose with credit cards. He wasn't paying off his cards on time, and interest was accruing out of control. This cost him a ton of money. In fact, Radio Shack once turned down his attempt to buy a computer on credit because his credit score was so bad. Cuban has frequently stated, 'cut up your credit cards […] if you use credit cards, you don't want to get rich.' Paying 15% to 20% interest is rarely a smart move — especially when you consider the S&P 500 only has an average return of 10% per year. Nowadays, Cuban advises that, instead of investing, just pay down your credit cards and then burn them. He learned an important lesson familiar to young people: Don't become too heavily dependent on debt to get ahead — especially if you have no immediate path to pay it off.
