UAE: First rose water made from Mohammadi and Taifi roses unveiled in Sharjah

Khaleej Times19-06-2025
The first successful local production of rose water in Sharjah has been unveiled, extracted from Mohammadi and Taifi roses, both known for their quality and scent.
The product appeared on social media as part of the exhibits at the Sharjah Products Exhibition held at Al Dhaid University, where it drew attention for its locally sourced ingredients.
Mohammadi roses originate from Oman and are currently cultivated in the UAE. Along with Taifi roses, they are used to extract rose water, which is commonly known for its cosmetic, therapeutic, and culinary uses.
This effort reflects the emirate's direction toward local agricultural production. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, President of Al Dhaid University, visited the exhibition and reviewed a wide range of products, including those from Jabal Al Deem such as Mohammadi and Taifi roses, honey, olives and their derivatives, apples, thyme, and rosemary.
He also visited the stand of the Sharjah Agricultural and Livestock Production Corporation (Ektifa), and reviewed the latest products of Grasse, including vegetables, fruits, and derivatives such as jam and sauces.

He also viewed Saba' Sanabel baked goods and Maliha dairy and yogurt products, as well as Fili poultry. As reported previously by Khaleej Times, the successful first grape harvest from the Ghammam Project in Sharjah, recorded at an altitude of 850 meters above sea level in Jabal Al Deem, marked an agricultural achievement for the region.
5 million seeds
According to the official website of Sheikh Dr Sultan, during the meeting of the Board of Trustees of Al Dhaid University, he explained that his efforts in collecting and classifying seeds began in 1973.
He currently maintains a seed bank containing approximately 5 million of them. The seed bank will be moved to Al Dhaid University to support scientific research and training for students in the agriculture program.
The Sharjah ruler concluded his tour with a visit to the Sharjah Products Exhibition at the university. He expressed interest in the quality of the items on display, which align with the emirate's approach to food security through scientific education and agricultural development.
Following the meeting, Sheikh Dr Sultan hosted a lunch for members of the Board of Trustees. The meal featured local products from Sharjah, including beef from the Maliha cattle farm, cheese from the goat farm, poultry from Fili farm, produce from the Al Dhaid greenhouses, and bread and grains from the wheat farms.

Abu Dhabi property owner ordered to pay over Dh332,990 to contractor after dispute

The Court of Cassation in Abu Dhabi has ordered a property owner to pay over Dh332,990 to a contractor after a dispute emerged between the two parties, court documents revealed. The court issued its final ruling in the case on Thursday, August 7, rejecting an appeal filed by the property owner against a previous judgment that ordered him to pay this amount of money to the contractor. The appeal was dismissed on procedural grounds related to the legal threshold required for appeals before the Court of Cassation, which is no less than Dh500,000, making the payment enforceable by final judgment. Case background After a disagreement between the property owner and the contractor concerning construction work at the property, the former filed a civil commercial lawsuit, which ended with ordering the contractor to pay him Dh250,000. The court said then that the ruling was based on the contractor's failure to implement the agreed-upon contracting work. The contractor later filed a separate lawsuit against the property owner, requesting that the latter be ordered to pay Dh332,990 as reimbursement for some construction work that had already been completed. The contractor also sought payment of a delay interest at an annual rate of 12% from the date the case was filed until full payment is made. The court ruled in favour of the contractor, but the owner appealed. Final ruling The Court of Cassation rejected the owner's appeal, though, on the ground that the claim amount (Dh332,990) falls below the minimum threshold of Dh500,000 required for cassation appeals, as stated in Article 175(1) of Federal Law No. 42 of 2022 on Civil Procedure. A technical expert report also confirmed that a significant portion of the contracted work—estimated at 89% completion—had already been carried out. As a result, the court ruled that the appellant (the property owner) is obliged to pay the contractor: Dh332,990 – the principal amount awarded for completed contracting works. 5% annual interest – from the date of the lawsuit until full payment. Dh1,000 – for the contractor's legal (attorney's) fees due to the cassation appeal being dismissed. Court fees and expenses – though not quantified in the judgment, they are also the responsibility of the losing party (the property owner).

Etihad Rail will open up new real estate hubs, says expert

The Etihad Rail network will transform the UAE's economic landscape by boosting connectivity, reducing travel times, and driving genuine demand in emerging markets, says a UAE property expert. Etihad Rail benefits will extend far beyond real estate, creating new corridors for living, trade, and investment across the Emirates, said Firas Al Msaddi, CEO of fäm Properties. 'When we saw Sheikh Mohammed riding the Etihad Rail from Dubai to Fujairah, that wasn't just a symbolic moment - that was the announcement of a new real estate era in the UAE,' said Al Msaddi. 'It represented a once-in-a-generation infrastructure shift that will redefine how value is created, captured, and capitalised across the Emirates," he said. 'We're not just talking about transportation. We're talking about speed, interconnectivity, and productivity, and how all of that compresses space and time. And when you compress space and time, you reduce opportunity cost. That's where the real value is unlocked. 'Etihad Rail isn't just a train, it's a full-scale economic reset for the UAE. It will shift demand patterns, eliminate bottlenecks, and open up new corridors for living, trade, and investment.' Added Msaddi: 'Each emirate has always had something unique to offer. But until now, the opportunity cost of movement, whether for people, goods, or capital, has been too high. 'Etihad Rail changes that. When you cut travel time from 2 hours to 50 minutes between cities, you don't just save time, you reshape where people choose to live, work, and invest. 'What used to be too far is suddenly next door. Fujairah is no longer the end of the UAE, it's the Eastern gateway. Al Ain becomes a realistic base for remote professionals who can now be in the capital or the coast in under an hour. This creates a complete re-pricing of land value, not based on geography, but based on accessibility.' Al Msaddi cites the example of Japan's bullet train between Tokyo and Osaka, which transformed cities like Nagoya in just five years. 'Commercial land values rose over 40%, and housing demand surged more than 60%,' he said. 'It wasn't about the train itself, but the economic flow unlocked by faster travel. 'The UAE is applying that same model, but with one major advantage: it's building the world's most advanced, tech-enabled rail system from the ground up, with no legacy constraints.' Pointing to the impact on logistics, B2B supply chains, and the decentralisation of corporate ecosystems, Al Msaddi says the equation most investors overlook is that faster travel means more meetings and more transactions. 'A salesperson based in Sharjah can now close deals in Abu Dhabi and Dubai without losing six hours to traffic,' he says. 'That boosts output. Multiply that across the commercial class, and you start seeing real GDP impact.' Al Msaddi says Etihad Rail's impact will see land prices rise in tier-2 cities like Fujairah, Al Dhaid, and Ruwais, because better connectivity will drive real demand. 'Transit-oriented hubs will rise near stations like Sharjah's University City and Sakamkam in Fujairah, with walkable, mixed-use clusters,' he says. 'Second-home markets will shift too. For families in Dubai, weekend beach units in Fujairah become practical when they're under an hour away. 'Those who still price real estate based on maps instead of travel-time analytics will lose money. Those who study station locations the way they used to study masterplans will build generational wealth,' he said.
