In Independence Day Eve Address, President's 'Buy Local' Call, Op Sindoor Praise
President Droupadi Murmu's address on the eve of Independence day mentioned two key talking points of the day -- buying local and ease of doing business. Both have been areas of concern in the aftermath of the imposition of 50 per cent tariff by the US on Indian goods.
The President's address -- traditionally an apolitical one that focusses on national aims and achievements -- traced 'buy local' to its origin in the Swadeshi movement and Mahatma Gandhi's advocacy of Khadi to its modern avatar "Make in India".
"Last week, on August 7, the country celebrated 'National Handloom Day' which honours our weavers and their products," President Murmu said.
"Since the year 2015, we have been celebrating this day to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement launched during our freedom struggle in the year 1905. The spirit of Swadeshi was strengthened by Mahatma Gandhi to promote the products made by the sweat and toil of Indian artisans and crafts-persons, and by their incomparable skills. The idea of Swadeshi has been inspiring our national endeavours like Make-in-India initiative and Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. Let us resolve to buy and use Indian products," she said.
The "ease of doing business", she said was as important as ease of living to improve the life of the common man.
"For betterment of the lives of the common people there is equal emphasis on improving the ease of doing business as well as on improving the ease of living," she said. "Moreover, we are increasing our self-reliance in every area possible. This has added to our self-confidence and increased the momentum of our journey towards becoming Viksit Bharat," President Murmu added.
"Radically improving the ease of doing business" as opposed to incremental reform had been part of the prescription from several analysts and industrialists including Anand Mahindra to make India a coveted destination for investors from across the world in face of spiralling US tariffs.
There has also been concern about artisans with jewellery, handicraft and textile industries set to take a hit from the US tariffs. Many in the BJP have now advocated self-reliance in terms of market.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a fresh push for 'Swadeshi', stressing that every individual must work to promote indigenous goods if "we want India to become the third-largest economy".
"Whatever we buy, we should ask ourselves - has an Indian toiled to make this? If it has been made by the sweat of our people, with their skills, that product is Swadeshi for us. We must adopt the mantra of 'Vocal for Local'."
Traders' groups have already pledged support for PM Modi's call to prioritise domestic goods to bolster economic self-reliance.
President Murmu also cited Operation Sindor, saying it was a "test case of the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission in the defence sector".
"The outcome has proved that we are on the right path. Our indigenous manufacturing has achieved the critical level that makes us self-sufficient in meeting many of our security requirements. These are landmark achievements in India's defence history since Independence," she said.
"I believe Operation Sindoor will go down in history as an example in humanity's fight against terrorism... The world has taken note of India's stance, that we will not be the aggressor, but we will not hesitate to retaliate in defence of our citizens," she added.

Sikh family attacked in MP's Bhind, protesters seek action against cops
A non-resident Indian (NRI) family from the United Kingdom was pelted with stones following a dispute with police in Bhind in Madhya Pradesh, leaving two children injured and their car damaged, an official said on Saturday. The incident took place on Thursday on the Station Road near Fatehpur village in Gohad tehsil, following which the Sikh community, to which the family belongs, held protests, including near the Gohad Chauraha police station, seeking stringent action against those involved. Local Congress MLA Keshav Desai joins the protest in Gohad, about 40 km from the district headquarters, says he will ensure the constable is booked and the SHO is transferred. The protesters, who wanted an FIR against constable Kuldeep Kushwaha and transfer of the station house officer, called off the stir after superintendent of police Asit Yadav assured them of strict action following a fair probe, local Sikh community leader Karan Singh said. Kushwaha was sent to police lines, SP Yadav said while denying that the constable was taken off field duty on Friday after the NRI family contacted embassy authorities in Delhi. 'The two children sustained only bruises. The constable was not directly involved in the incident. First, we will register an FIR against unidentified people who indulged in the act. Action will be taken on the basis of further investigation. This is a rash and negligent act. They threw stones to stop the vehicle, which resulted in its windows getting damaged, as well as injuries to those inside,' the SP said. 'The attackers are being identified. It was not an attack. It was a miscommunication between the two (NRI and policeman). Both had a heated argument. The two sides did not know each other. I have spoken to the NRI family,' the SP added. Local Congress MLA Keshav Desai, who joined the protest in Gohad, about 40 km from the district headquarters, said he would ensure the constable is booked and the SHO is transferred. 'Dr Vikramjeet Singh, his wife Rajveer Kaur, daughter Ravneet Kaur and son Rohanpreet Singh came to Fatehpur village on August 14. Fatehpur is Rajveer Kaur's native village. Kushwaha, dressed in civil clothes, argued with them while their car was parked on Station Road to buy fruits and sweets,' Desai said. 'Kushwaha recorded a video of the vehicle, to which Dr Singh objected. Kushwaha threatened Dr Singh, who, possibly out of fear, tried to speed away. His vehicle was stopped by unidentified persons and his family attacked with sticks and stones near a dhaba. The children were injured and the vehicles windows were damaged,' Desai added.

AAP MP Kang urges MEA to act on stranded Indians in Spain
AAP MP from Punjab, Malvinder Singh Kang, has written to external affairs minister S Jaishankar, seeking his urgent intervention to resolve the problems being faced by several Indian nationals stranded in Spain due to delays in passport renewal and re-issuance at the Indian Consulate there. These individuals were being deprived of their fundamental right to mobility and reunion with their families, the MP from Anandpur Sahib claimed. (HT) In the letter, Kang said routine matters such as damaged, lost or expired passports had escalated into a 'humanitarian emergency', leaving countless citizens, including many from Punjab, stranded in Spain for more than six months. These individuals, the MP from Anandpur Sahib claimed, were being deprived of their fundamental right to mobility and reunion with their families. 'Some of those affected face grave medical conditions requiring urgent treatment, while others are battling heart-wrenching family emergencies,' Kang wrote. The AAP MP cautioned that the persistent bottlenecks in passport processing not only inflicted unbearable hardships on citizens abroad, but also undermined India's reputation as a 'compassionate' and 'efficient' guardian of its global diaspora. He urged the MEA to direct the Consulate in Spain to overhaul its processes, prioritise pending cases and ensure swift passport services. 'Many face critical medical needs or family tragedies. A viral video captures their anguish. Swift and decisive clearance of all pending cases is essential to end their suffering, uphold their dignity, and reunite them with their families,' Kang said in a post on X. He also assured the ministry of full cooperation in bridging the connections with those impacted, and providing further details as and when needed. The AAP MP expressed confidence that swift action by the government would ease the burden of the affected individuals, reaffirm India's commitment to responsive governance, and safeguard the dignity and well-being of its citizens abroad.

It will be a deep-dive overhaul of the indirect tax framework that was rolled out eight years ago, officials said. The revamp will seek to bring an end to classification disputes duty inversions and procedural issues to provide stability and clarity to businesses, they exercise will also be accompanied by a push for greater alignment and coordination between the state and central tax authorities on assessment, audit and investigation to ensure that businesses do not face multiple actions for the same matter, the officials GST Council , the apex decision-making body on the levy, is likely to meet September 18-19 to take up the proposed changes, they said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had highlighted the coming changes in GST during his Independence Day address on Friday, calling it a 'Diwali gift' for the people of the country. GST 2.0 will also reduce the tax burden by having only two major slabs — 5% and 18%. 'Rate rationalisation is one part of the proposal, but it goes much beyond that… This is an opportunity for a wider reform of the structure,' one of the officials told decisions by various courts on the taxation of the same items had given rise to ambiguity, he said. Most of the items of daily consumption, those used in farming or related to health are expected to be in the 5% bracket. A special rate of 40% will be introduced for about half-adozen items that will include so-called sin goods and luxury cars.'We have examined each item and issues around it,' the second official said. 'The idea was to look ahead and not how it was done in the past, line by line… It was an intensive and rigorous exercise.'The proposal has already been sent to the group of ministers (GoM) that the GST Council had set up on rate rationalisation. The panel will deliberate on the Centre's proposal in the coming week. The GoM's recommendations will be placed before the GST Centre will hold discussions with the states on the proposal, which has the potential to perk up domestic consumption and bolster growth. Officials are hopeful that the timelines can be met to meet the festive season shopping date.
