NEW DELHI: Dr PK Mishra, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said that India's rising geopolitical influence, strategic partnerships, global diaspora, and soft power are key factors which amplify its international presence.
Addressing the graduating Scientific Officers today at the 68th Graduation Function in the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) Training School, marking a milestone for the institution and the next generation of India's scientific community, Dr Mishra outlined India's advancements in every field.
He remarked on the legacy of BARC and the vision of Dr Homi Jehangir Bhabha, praising the institution for its training excellence and contributions to India's development. He highlighted India's global rise driven by internal transformation and shifting international dynamics, noting strengths such as youth demographics, infrastructure expansion, and technological achievements.
Highlighting the Prime Minister's vision for Vikshit Bharat in 2047, he underscored the importance of 'reform, perform, and transform' in transforming the country into a developed nation. Dr Mishra cited multiple national achievements such as India's position as the third-largest startup ecosystem with over 100 unicorns. He also added that the scale of digital infrastructure, including UPI processing over 185 billion transactions in 2024–25 and bold climate commitments including 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and initiatives like the National Green Hydrogen Mission, have helped the country move forward.
Noting the successful opening of the space sector, Mishra remarked that similar initiatives are envisaged for atomic energy, essential for clean energy and national security. He also highlighted key budget announcements from the Budget 2024–25 like R&D support for Bharat Small Modular Reactors and advanced nuclear technologies and a targeted expansion to 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047, with proposed amendments to relevant legislation enabling private sector participation.

Stocks to buy for the short term: The Indian stock market benchmark, Nifty 50, experienced high volatility on August 7, after US President Trump announced an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports to the US. The index, however, ended with mild gains, snapping its two-day losing run. Ajit Mishra, SVP of research at Religare Broking, underscored that although tariff-related concerns triggered fresh volatility, the Nifty managed to hold above the 24,450 mark on a closing basis. This reaffirms the significance of this level as a strong support — the lower band of the previous consolidation range that had earlier led to a rally. Mishra believes a decisive move above the 24,800 could pave the way for a further rebound towards the 25,000 mark. "Amid the prevailing uncertainty, we continue to advise a cautious approach and prefer maintaining hedged positions," said Mishra. After a prolonged consolidation phase in the form of a rectangle pattern, Indian Bank shares broke out above the upper resistance band, signalling the start of a fresh up move. However, following the breakout, it underwent a time-wise correction, forming a new base above the pattern's neckline. This base-on-base formation reflects a healthy base-building process and resilience amid the broader market correction. The formation of a buying pivot, along with sustained closes above the 20-week EMA, confirms the resumption of the primary uptrend. Indian Bank technical chart Jindal Steel has recently signalled the end of its corrective phase by breaking out above the descending trendline. This was accompanied by a breakout from a tight rectangular consolidation pattern, supported by rising volumes—further reinforcing the bullish outlook. Jindal Steel is now trading above its 20-week EMA, adding to the positive bias. Moreover, the successful retest and rebound from the support zone suggest strong upside momentum following this period of sideways consolidation. Jindal Steel technical chart TVS Motor stands out as one of the top performers within the auto pack and is currently trading at all-time high levels, reflecting a sustained bullish structure. The price action continues to form a higher high–higher low pattern, confirming a strong uptrend, supported by key short- to medium-term moving averages. TVS Motor registered a breakout from a cup and handle pattern, accompanied by a notable rise in volumes—further validating the bullish continuation signal. Given the robust chart setup and a favourable sectoral backdrop, we expect the prevailing strength to persist and the positive momentum to extend further. How India's nuclear vision supports a sustainable tomorrow

— Renuka For over a century, fossil fuels have powered progress. However, this progress has come at the cost of climate change. Our dependence on coal, oil and gas has unleashed a sobering reality of crisis related to rising sea levels, erratic weather patterns, and heat waves. In this background, energy independence has become a question of survival for us. Energy independence means making our development and economic growth free from fossil fuels. India's renewable energy sector has made significant strides in recent years. Its renewable energy capacity crossed the 200 GW milestone as of October 2024, representing a 13.5 per cent year-on-year increase. This includes 92 GW of solar power, 52 GW of Hydro power, 48 GW of wind energy and 11 GW of bio-energy. This achievement aligns with India's broader climate and energy security goals. However, it is also increasingly evident that solar and wind energy alone may not suffice to meet India's ever-increasing energy needs. These sources are inherently intermittent and seasonal and have spatial restrictions. In this context, nuclear energy emerges as a critical complement to renewable energy in ensuring long-term energy security. Nuclear power provides high-capacity, base-load electricity with minimal carbon emissions, operating independently of weather and seasonal fluctuation. India has set an ambitious target to increase nuclear capacity to 22,800 MW by 2031-32 and 100 GW by 2047. A diversified energy portfolio is a strategic necessity for India's development and energy independence. The nuclear journey of India began with a vision of self-reliance and peaceful use of nuclear technology. The foundation of nuclear research and development was laid with the establishment of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in 1945, and of the Department of Atomic Energy and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in 1954. In the 1960s, India's nuclear power stations began operations in Tarapur and Rajasthan with the help of the US and Canada. However, the 1962 Sino-Indian War, followed by China's testing of its first atomic bomb in 1964, served as a wake-up call for India, prompting a shift in its nuclear policy. In 1968, India refused to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) on the grounds that it was discriminatory to countries except the P-5. India's first nuclear test in 1974, Pokhran I, was a turning point. It drew significant criticism from many countries, and led to the formation of the 48-nation Nuclear Supplier Group (NSG) to restrict nuclear trade. India, being outside the NPT, was denied access to nuclear technology for decades. However, India continued to develop its indigenous nuclear technology and maintained a consistent policy of nuclear responsibility. In 1996, India refused to sign the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) on the grounds that its being largely focused on horizontal non-proliferation rather than on disarmament. The Pokhran II nuclear test in 1998, alongside its refusal to sign the CTBT, isolated India. But to meet its growing energy demand, it needed to increase its nuclear capacity. After Pokhran II, India declared its 'No-First-Use' policy along with Non-Use against Non-Nuclear Weapons States and Minimum Nuclear Deterrence. India also established the Nuclear Command Authority and the Strategic Forces Command, which institutionalised nuclear control in India. This helped India to build trust in its nuclear policy and diplomacy. A major turning point came with the India-US Civil Nuclear agreement (123 Agreement) in 2005. It is a bilateral accord on civil nuclear co-operation between India and the US under Section 123 of the Atomic Energy Act, 1954 of the US. This acknowledged India's non-proliferation record, and following this NSG granted India a waiver in 2008 allowing it to engage in civil nuclear trade without signing the NPT. To meet the NSG waiver conditions, India voluntarily separated its civilian and military nuclear programmes and signed an agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to place its civilian reactors (those using imported uranium for civilian purposes) under international safeguards. The agreement allows the agency to inspect and verify the peaceful use of nuclear material in designated facilities. Following this, India has joined three major export control regimes- the Missile Technology Control Regime, the Australia Group and the Wassenaar Arrangement. However, its bid for NSG membership remains inconclusive, with countries like China insisting that only NPT signatories should be considered for NSG membership. India currently has 24 nuclear reactors in operation, most of which use the pressurised Heavy Water reactor (PHWR) design, with a total generation of around 8180 megawatts of electricity. These reactors are largely run by the government-owned Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL). In the union budget of 2025-2026, the government launched 'Nuclear Energy Mission (NEM) for Viksit Bharat' with a target of achieving 100 GW nuclear capacity by 2047. It has been envisioned with the purpose of achieving energy independence, and helping India to meet its climate targets by developing indigenous capabilities, public-private partnership, and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). A budget of Rs 20,000 crores has been allocated to develop SMRs. Moreover, a combination of indigenous pressurised heavy water reactors, fast breeder reactors, and the exploration of SMR nuclear energy would help India bridge the gap left by renewables and support its transition to a stable, low-carbon economy. Currently, India's nuclear aspirations face challenges, both global and domestic. One of the most crucial challenges is the membership of the NSG, limiting its access to advanced nuclear technology. Domestically, the nuclear sector continues to attract very limited private and foreign investment. The foremost reason has been the regulatory and legal bar under India's nuclear laws. The Atomic Energy Act, 1962, grants the Indian government exclusive power over nuclear power generation and control, leaving no room for private or foreign players. Apart from this, the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, 2010, imposed supplier liability in case of a nuclear accident, diverging from global norms. This has deterred major foreign suppliers and investors who view the risk exposures as too high. To overcome this, the Government has expressed its intention to amend the nuclear law and relax the regulations. Incorporating nuclear energy into India's clean energy mix not only supports decarbonisation goals but also reduces dependence on imported fossil fuels. This is particularly significant in view of the country's growing industrial and urban energy needs. With required reforms and technological advancement, nuclear energy is emerging as a reliable, low-carbon pillar of India's energy security. If managed wisely, it will not only support the vision of Viksit Bharat but also position India as a global leader in sustainable nuclear technology, steering the country towards a cleaner, self-reliant future. SAT grants relief to Arshad Warsi in Sadhna Broadcast stock manipulation case

The Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) has stayed the markets regulator's disgorgement and debarment order against Bollywood actor Arshad Warsi in the Sadhna Broadcast Ltd (SBL) stock manipulation case, pending the outcome of his appeal. The tribunal clarified that Warsi and the co-appellants, including his wife Maria Goretti and brother Iqbal Warsi, need to deposit a total of ₹ 60 lakh in an escrow account, pending the final outcome, said the 31 July verdict. The SAT bench, led by presiding officer Justice P.S. Dinesh Kumar, noted that ₹ 40,66,760 had already been deposited in compliance with its March 2023 interim order. So, Warsi must deposit ₹ 19,33,240 more to meet the tribunal's condition. The case will next be heard on 15 September 2025, together with a related appeal. Warsi, Goretti, and Iqbal Warsi were named among 64 parties in the Securities and Exchange Board of India's (Sebi) 29 May order. The regulator imposed a ₹ 5 lakh penalty on the Bollywood actor and barred him from trading in the securities market for one year. The order followed Sebi's March 2023 interim directive, barring him and his wife from the market. However, on appeal, the SAT partially set aside the ban that same month. The tribunal restricted the trading ban to the SBL scrip during the investigation and directed the Warsis to deposit 50% of their alleged unlawful gains of over ₹ 60 lakh in an escrow account. For the remaining amount, they were required to provide an undertaking to deposit it within 30 days of the final order. Sebi's show cause notice categorized Warsi as a 'connected entity' to YouTube content creators Manish Mishra and Ahuti Mistry. However, the evidence the regulator primarily relied upon, a screenshot of WhatsApp chats between Warsi and Ahuti Mistry, was called into question. Mishra, a financial influencer, and Mistry are both co-accused in the Sebi case. Warsi's counsel, Akshay Petkar, argued that the chats, at best, established a professional or contractual relationship between the parties and did not prove that Warsi facilitated market manipulation or actively aided Mishra in a pump-and-dump operation. Notably, the referenced chats with Mishra involved an entirely different scrip, VCU Data Management Co. Ltd, not SBL, which is at the heart of this proceeding. He also argued the actor had only a professional engagement with Laddu Gopal Ventures and Mishra for the film project Jeevan Bima Yojana, and never received ₹ 25 lakh from Mishra, contrary to what's inferred from the chats. Furthermore, Petkar claimed that the profits earned by the appellants from the SBL trading were fully reinvested and have remained invested to date. Petkar also criticized Sebi's latest order, asserting that it failed to address prior SAT directions or the appellants' written submissions, and simply concluded, 'on surmises and conjectures', that Warsi played a facilitative role in market manipulation. Sebi stated in its 29 May order, the SBL scheme allegedly operated from March to November 2022 and was based on a digital promotional blitz via YouTube channels—The Advisor, Moneywise, and Profit Yatra—allegedly orchestrated by Mishra. These channels misrepresented SBL's prospects, fueling investor frenzy and enabling insiders to offload shares worth over ₹ 33 crore as the stock's public shareholding jumped from under 1,000 to over 70,000 in months. On 13 July 2022, Sebi alleged that Warsi and his wife bought substantial SBL shares and liquidated them the next day for profits exceeding ₹ 1.7 crore jointly. While Warsi denies wrongdoing, claiming he traded on a friend's tip and was unaware of any fraud, Sebi has maintained that trading patterns and chat evidence suggest deeper involvement.
