Sheriff rules death of John Elway's longtime agent Jeff Sperbeck a ‘tragic accident'; no charges filed
Three months after NFL agent Jeff Sperbeck died in a golf cart fall, California authorities have officially closed their investigation, confirming no criminal charges will be filed against John Elway, who had been driving the cart.
The tragic incident, which occurred on April 26 in La Quinta, involved no foul play, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Office.
Investigation confirms no fault, tragic accident
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco confirmed the case is now closed after interviews with all involved and a full review of the scene. 'It's over,' Bianco told 9NEWS. 'We've talked to everyone involved and we found nothing new. There was nothing criminal… this was a tragic accident.'
Sperbeck, 62, fell off the back of a moving golf cart at The Madison Club and suffered blunt force head trauma. He died a few days later on April 30. Officials say there was no sign of intoxication, impairment, or mechanical issues involved in the incident. While initial news of Elway's involvement drew headlines, investigators found no evidence of negligence or intent. The death has now been officially ruled accidental by the Riverside County Coroner.

Elway mourned loss of trusted friend and partner
Following the tragic incident, Elway released a heartfelt public statement honoring his longtime agent and close friend. 'I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck,' Elway said.
'There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me. My heart and deepest sympathies go out to Jeff's wife, Cori; his children Carly, Sam and Jackson; and everyone who knew and loved him.'
The two shared a professional bond dating back to 1990, when Sperbeck began managing Elway's career. Over the years, their relationship grew into a friendship rooted in trust, loyalty and business vision.
Sperbeck's impact stretched far beyond football
Sperbeck was a pioneer in NFL player representation, managing the careers of over 100
NFL
players and coaches. He co-founded Sullivan & Sperbeck, then led Octagon's football division before launching The NOVO Agency in 2009.
The firm later merged with Rep1 Sports in 2018.

Day 1: Pvt Buses Face 12 FIRs, 15 Challans Till 7Pm
1 2 Nagpur: On first day of rollout of the private bus parking ban, traffic police on Wednesday cracked down on vehicles parked illegally on roads, causing traffic jams. However, buses dropping off or picking passengers were spared. Cops registered 12 FIRs against bus operators for violating the recent order issued by DCP (Traffic) Lohit Matani and for causing danger by obstruction. Till evening, the cops dealt with the bus operators with velvet gloves. Instead of taking strict action, they asked bus operators to leave, and some even complied, fearing police action. Such was the impact of the city police action that by 9pm, Chhatrapati Square, which usually witnesses long lines of private buses, and traffic chaos because of it, was completely devoid of buses. The traffic department had on August 12 issued a notification banning the pick-up and drop service of private bus operators inside the Inner Ring Road boundary. Police also gave seven days to the operators to find locations, with the deadline of August 20. "The drive will continue, and after some days, we will even intensify the action to clear the city roads," said the DCP, adding that many vehicles were parked on roads for more than 45 minutes. Police deployed 21 officers and 70 personnel for the drive. Till 7pm, cops had registered 12 FIRs and also seized vehicles, which were later sent to the respective police station. The FIRs were registered under section 223 and 285 of Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita. Cops also imposed a 5,000 fine on 15 vehicles under the Motor Vehicle Act for illegal parking. TOI on Wednesday also visited many spots in the city where private buses pick-up and drop passengers. Interestingly, during afternoon hours, at locations like Chhatrapati Square, Bole Petrol Pump, Ravi Nagar, Rahate Colony, and Central Avenue, the private operators were picking up and dropping passengers like usual. However, by evening, the police went into action and started cracking down heavily. However, police also started removing the buses rather than only issuing challans. "On Wednesday, we focused mainly on Chhatrapati Square and Central Avenue, where the menace of private buses is higher," said DCP Matani. Meanwhile, the process of identifying locations for private buses for pay and park is also underway inside city limits.
