Hyderabad: The race for a ticket to contest the bypoll to the Jubilee Hills constituency has intensified, with even a sitting MLA expressing keen interest in entering the fray. According to sources, turncoat MLA from Khairatabad, Danam Nagender , has sent feelers to the Congress leadership, indicating that if he is fielded for the bypoll, he can ensure party's victory not only in Jubilee Hills but also in Khairatabad constituency. Danam won the Khairatabad seat on a BRS ticket in 2023 and later joined the Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. A senior Congress leader stated that there is a high demand for the Jubilee Hills bypoll ticket. "Almost everyone in the Congress is of the opinion that whoever wins the bypoll will be given a cabinet berth. This is because there is currently no minister in the cabinet from Greater Hyderabad. The Congress failed to win any of the 24 seats in Greater Hyderabad during the 2023 assembly election. Though the Congress won the Secunderabad Cantonment seat in a bypoll held along with the Lok Sabha polls, Sri Ganesh is a first-time MLA and was not considered for a cabinet berth. While all of them are still BRS MLAs in the official records of the state assembly, Danam contested the Secunderabad Lok Sabha seat on a Congress ticket, without officially resigning from the BRS. There is a speculation within the ruling party that Danam could be the first among the turncoats to face disqualification if the speaker takes a decision on the legislators. "Contesting from Jubilee Hills will provide a safe alternative to Danam. Also, if he gets the ticket and wins the byelection, he will have the highest scope of making it to the cabinet. He served as a minister in the YS Rajasekhar Reddy govt in the undivided state. But the AICC will finalise the candidate for the bypoll. The bypoll is also prestigious for the BJP, as it will be the first major election for a seat in the assembly under the leadership of the BJP's new state president, Ramchander Rao. Also, the Jubilee Hills seat is part of the Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency represented by Union minister G Kishan Reddy.

Two men transporting cattle tied up, made to squat, 2 held: Bengal Police
TWO MEN were beaten, tied up and made to squat allegedly by members of a Hindu outfit, accompanied by some BJP workers, in Durgapur on Friday after they were spotted transporting cattle – including cows – police said. Two persons were arrested in connection with the incident, they added. Citing local residents, police sources said that the two men, who belong to another community, claimed that they were returning from Barjora of Bankura district after 'purchasing cows for agricultural purposes.' However, the BJP claimed that the men were asked to show proper documents regarding the purchase of cows but could not do so. Some BJP workers staged a protest over the incident. TMC MLA from Pandabeswar, Narendranath Chakraborty, said, 'This can't be allowed in Bengal. We have approached the police and demanded stern action against those who did this.' In a post on X later in the day, the West Bengal Police wrote, 'Two persons belonging to a minority community, while carrying cattle for farming purposes, were detained and severely beaten up in Durgapur by some hooligans… A case has been registered over the incident and two of the miscreants have been arrested. Raids are on to apprehend all those involved…' The police added, 'Nothing and no one will be allowed to dent our state's tradition of inclusivity and harmony. Amit Shah's promise on bail for nuns was not kept: Archbishop
Thalassery Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplani on Friday said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah's assurance that the Malayali nuns arrested in Chhattisgarh would be granted bail had not materialised. Addressing the media in Kannur on the sidelines of the protest led by the Thalassery, Kottayam and Kannur dioceses, Archbishop Pamplani said that although Amit Shah had promised that the Chattisgarh government would not oppose the bail plea, the government's lawyer argued in court that the nuns had committed a non-bailable offence. He noted that while the country at large acknowledged that the nuns had not done anything wrong, they remained in custody. Citing Central government data, he said forced conversions had not taken place in the country and termed the Prohibition of Forced Conversion Act as a tool to harass individuals like the detained nuns.
