Mumbai court grants bail to doctor accused of aiding teacher in teen's sexual assault
The doctor, arrested on July 18 and remanded to judicial custody on July 23, was booked for allegedly prescribing anti-anxiety pills to the teenage boy that allegedly allowed the teacher to coerce him into submission and prolonged sexual relationship, though the teacher has denied the charges.
Special judge Sabina A Malik, while allowing the bail plea, noted that the doctor was 'not the main accused' and that custodial interrogation was complete. 'There is nothing more to be recovered or discovered at the hands of this applicant,' the court observed, adding that 'the trial will take time to commence, and in the meantime, nothing fruitful would be gained by keeping this applicant behind bars.'
The prosecution, as well as the minor survivor, opposed the bail plea. In a written submission, the boy said he feared manipulation or harm if the doctor were released, and that her freedom would leave him in a state of 'perpetual fear.'
Granting bail on a personal bond of ₹50,000 with solvent sureties, the court imposed strict conditions: the doctor must not contact the survivor, tamper with evidence, or leave Mumbai without prior permission. 'Breach of any condition will amount to cancellation of bail forthwith,' the order stated.
This development comes weeks after the court also granted bail to the boy's former teacher, who had been arrested under provisions of the POCSO Act, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and the Juvenile Justice Act. The teacher, who allegedly exploited the student over more than a year, was accused of luring him to five-star hotels, intoxicating him with alcohol and pills, and engaging in repeated sexual acts between January 2024 and February 2025.
In her defence, the teacher argued that the FIR was 'motivated' and filed at the behest of the boy's mother. She claimed the relationship was consensual after the boy turned 16, and cited affectionate messages, handwritten notes, and a tattoo of her name on his body to support her claims.
While granting her bail last month, the court observed that her resignation from the school in April 2024 had altered the 'student–teacher dynamic' and noted her responsibilities as a single mother of twins, one of whom is medically vulnerable.
Both the doctor and the teacher remain accused under serious charges, including sections of the POCSO Act, BNS, and the Juvenile Justice Act. The court has warned that any violation of bail terms by either party will lead to immediate cancellation of relief.

BENGALURU: The High Court of Karnataka on Wednesday stayed further proceedings against energy minister KJ George, Bescom MD Mahantesh Bilagi and another official in the case pertaining to a special court directing the Lokayukta police to submit a report on a private complaint filed by three BJP MLAs over the alleged irregularities in inviting tenders for supply of smart meters. Justice MI Arun passed the interim order staying the proceedings till August 20 and issued notice to the complainants after hearing the petitions filed by George, Bilagi and another Bescom official questioning the legality of the order passed by the special court. Their counsel argued that the order passed by the special court is against the law as no prior sanction was obtained from the competent authority to prosecute the petitioners, who are public servants, as mandated under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The complainants, MLAs Ashwath Narayan CN, SR Vishwanath and Dheeraj Muniraj, approached the Lokayukta police on April 21. Before the Lokayukta police initiated action, the complainants filed a private complaint before the special court, which registered it for offences under the provisions of BNS and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

KOCHI: In an odd move, the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate Court has directed the Kochi city police to register a case against Malayalam actor Swetha Menon on charges of 'transmitting sexually explicit content' and 'indecent representation' of women through her roles in certain films, some of them widely acclaimed ones. The case, filed on Wednesday by the Ernakulam central police, stems from a complaint filed by activist Martin Menacherry, who claims Swetha earned money from obscene films. The charges, under the Information Technology Act for transmitting sexually explicit content and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, cite her roles in films like Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathira Kolapathakathinte Katha, Rathinirvedam, Kalimannu (which included her real-life childbirth), and a condom brand advertisement, alleging clips from these have appeared on social media and pornographic websites. Responding to the controversy, Kalimannu director Blessy suspects the move is planned. 'Even before the release of Kalimannu in 2012, there were controversies and protests against the film and the artists. But once the film was released with a CBFC certificate, those creating issues went silent since there was no obscene content. Now, after 12 years, some people are filing complaints. I suspect a conspiracy behind this,' Blessy told TNIE. Initially, the police reportedly took no action on the complaint. However, Menachery approached the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, which subsequently directed the police to register a case. Ernakulam central SHO Anish Joy expressed confusion over the court's decision to assign the case to their jurisdiction. He added that the police are proceeding with an investigation, including summoning the complainant for a statement. Commenting on the case, Advocate Vimala Binu of the Kerala High Court stated that the charges are unlikely to stand legally. 'Swetha has performed in films as part of her professional freedom. These are certified films, not banned in India. There is no legal violation in acting in such films,' she said. She further noted that Swetha has the option to approach the HC to quash the FIR and seek a stay on the probe.

The case stems from a private complaint filed by BJP leaders CN Ashwath Narayan, SR Vishwanath and Dheeraj Muniraj. Earlier, on July 23, the Special Court had ordered the registration of a private complaint against George, former BESCOM managing director Mahantesh Bilgi and engineer Ramesh HJ. The complaint alleges irregularities in the awarding of the smart meter contract, alleging that the minister colluded with BESCOM officials to favour a particular company— Rajashree Electricals—by diluting eligibility norms and undervaluing the contract. The complaint pertains to a tender floated by BESCOM on September 26, 2024, for smart meter services. The BJP leaders allege that the contract was awarded to Rajashree Electricals, a company described in the petition as a shell entity based in Davangere, in violation of the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (KTPP) Act, 2000, and the rules of the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC). The petitioners claim that instead of issuing separate tenders for each power supply company across regions, the entire contract was routed through BESCOM, bypassing norms meant to ensure competition and transparency. Appearing for George, senior advocate Shathabish Shivanna contended that the prosecution lacked mandatory sanction. 'Our client is a sitting legislator. Under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, prior sanction from the competent authority is required to prosecute a public servant. In this case, no such sanction was obtained before initiating proceedings. This makes the entire process legally untenable,' he argued. The court took cognisance of the argument and stayed proceedings before the Special Court. George's legal team further asserted that the complaint lacked substance and was politically driven. 'A plain reading of the allegations shows that our client had no direct or indirect role. The complaint is vague, politically motivated, and part of a larger pattern of harassment by BJP legislators,' they said. Advocates Samruddh Sura Hegde and Leela P appeared for the BESCOM officers named in the case. The interim stay drew sharp reactions from politicians on both sides of the political spectrum. 'It is an open secret that minister KJ George through BESCOM looted public money on the pretext of smart meters,' said BJP state media convener K Karunakar. 'A smart meter costs ₹10,000 here while same meter cost is just ₹2,000 in neighbouring states. This is a clear case of corruption and the court will punish him,' he added. The Congress rejected the allegations, with KPCC general secretary Manjunath Bhandari saying, 'This is not a scam. The government is doing all tender proceedings transparently and all the suppliers of meters were allowed to participate in the process.' He added, 'KJ George will come out clean after the probe.'
