More people, more business: Huntsville's event-filled weekend benefits local businesses
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Crowds from across the nation are making their way to the Rocket City to take part in a weekend full of events.
Some of those events include the Panoply Art Festival, Huntsville Comic & Pop Culture Expo, Broadway Theatre League's Peter Pan, Monster Jam and more.

Officials credit the city's busy schedule to its continuous growth.
'As we grow, more options pop up for people to enjoy,' Claire Aiello with the Huntsville Madison County Chamber of Commerce said. 'It just happens that this is gonna be a really busy one.'
Aiello said more events mean more people, and more people mean more business.
'You're going to see a lot of people, maybe eating dinner before or after, or eating lunch downtown, checking out the shops,' Aiello said. 'It's a great opportunity to bring in new eyes to your business.'
Madison County Commission reviews feasibility study for new courthouse
Caleb Shaw is the co-owner of One Man's Vintage, which has been open for the past three years in Downtown Huntsville. He said event weekends bring in the bucks.
'There's definitely a spike of sales, spike of people,' Shaw said. 'We get a lot of people from out of town, especially for these events. People that aren't used to coming to Huntsville usually.'
Shaw hopes this weekend is no different.
'I just hope to see more people,' Shaw said. 'Maybe a little spike in sales and people enjoying downtown and being, you know, coming to see us maybe for the first time.'
When asked if he agrees with Shaw about more revenue on event weekends, 'The Bottle' manager Colton Dixon said, '1,000%, absolutely.'
Dixon went on to add that he hopes people get their fill at the festivals, then get full at 'The Bottle'.
'I hope everybody goes out, has a great time, and then comes here for a great dinner,' Dixon said. 'I mean, obviously, we love the business, and I know Huntsville loves to have events and stuff like that to bring in.'
The City of Huntsville released a list of 'dos and don'ts' for parking, traffic and similar downtown activities for the weekend. That list can be found on News 19.

Not the news these boys wanted: Christian rock band responds to former lead singer's sexual assault, drug abuse allegations
TENNESSEE (WHNT) — The Newsboys, a Christian rock band, released a statement Thursday following allegations made against its former lead singer, Michael Tait. Tait joined the Newsboys in 2009 after the former lead singer, Peter Furler, decided to take a step back into a supporting role with the group. 'Peter will continue with the band and his trademark songwriting and production will remain as he focuses his professional career toward future Newsboys recordings,' the band said in a statement on March 9, 2009. After a successful 15 years with the band, Tait made an announcement on social media on Jan. 16, 2025, stating that he was leaving the band. You can read the full statement below: 'Fifteen years ago, my life was forever changed when I received the invite to step into the role of lead singer for Newsboys. The years since have been some of the most fulfilling, faith-filled, and rewarding years of my life. I have been on an amazing journey all over the globe, performing and ministering to people of all ages, races, and backgrounds. Together we wrote and produced music that I am deeply proud of – from 'Born Again' and 'We Believe' to 'Worldwide Revival' and of course, 'God's Not Dead.' While this may come as a surprise given I've been touring ever since college, I've made for me what is a monumental and heartfelt decision that it is time to step down from Newsboys. This decision does not come lightly and has been a shock to even myself, but amidst prayer and fasting, I have clarity that this is the right decision. As we are reminded in Matthew 6:33, 'But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.' I truly believe these words and although nervous about the future, I am excited about what it holds for both myself, and for Newsboys, as we all seek first His kingdom and His righteousness.' Michael Tait The band then announced that its 'Worldwide Revival Nights' tour would still be happening as planned, stating that 'the next chapter is just beginning!' However, this time post-Tait was not easy. The band announced on May 24 that the Canada tour would be cancelled due to a promoter breach. 'It is with deep disappointment that we announce the cancellation of all upcoming Newsboys Canada 2025 tour dates, scheduled for May 31-June 16, 2025.' The breaches, according to the band, include 'failure to provide required artist deposits and confirm payment to supporting acts, failure to coordinate technical production and logistics with venues, failure to maintain communication with venue staff, artist management and tour partners and admission of inability to refund ticket holders due to prior financial commitments.' Following this, the band said, 'We urge all affected fans to contact the original ticketing outlet or host venue regarding refund inquiries. If you experience difficulty securing a refund, we recommend contacting the appropriate provincial consumer protection office or the Competition Bureau of Canada.' This was just the start of statements the band would have to make, as on June 5, the band released a statement saying how their hearts were 'shattered' when they heard about allegations made against former frontman Tait. You can read the full statement below: 'Last night our hearts were shattered when we read the news alleging drug abuse and inappropriate sexual actions by our former lead singer, Michael Tait. While Michael has not addressed these allegations, we are devastated even by the implications. First and foremost, our hearts are with the victims who have bravely shared their stories. If you are a victim, we urge you to come forward. We absolutely do not condone any form of sexual assault. The four of us are husbands and fathers. Between the four of us, we have fourteen children. Our wives and children have made many sacrifices while we have dedicated our lives to playing music together that glorifies God. We are horrified, heartbroken, and angry at this report and in many ways, we feel as if we and our families have been deceived for the last fifteen years. When he left the band in January, Michael confessed to us and our management that he 'had been living a double-life' but we never imagined that it could be this bad.' Jeff, Jody, Duncan and Adam The Newsboys are a Christian rock band formed in Australia in 1985. The band consisted of Peter Furler, George Perdikis, John James, Sean Taylor and Corey Pryor at the start. The band moved to the United States in late 1987 after getting signed with Refuge Communications. They released the album Read All About It in 1988. Tait's allegations come from The Roys Report, a 'Christian media outlet, reporting the unvarnished truth about what's happening in the Christian community so the church can be reformed and restored,' its website says. It was founded by 'investigative journalist Julie Roys, The Roys Report began as a personal blog where Julie published her commentaries and occasional investigative pieces while working as a national radio host on Moody Radio. However, in 2018, Julie published a series of articles on her website, exposing corruption and mission drift at the Moody Bible Institute. This led to the exit of three top officers at Moody. It also ended Julie's relationship with Moody and changed the focus of Julie's website—from a blog offering cultural commentary to an independent Christian media outlet exposing corruption, abuse, and what's been termed the 'evangelical industrial complex.' The exclusive article on TRR says Tait is accused of sexual assault, grooming and substance abuse dating back to 2004. TRR says after a two and a half year investigation and speaking with alleged victims, 'Three men spoke to TRR, alleging that Tait befriended them individually on Christian music tours in 2004, 2010, and 2014. David Shaw and Tarriona ‘Tank' Ball Bring the Heat to New Orleans' Musicians on Musicians Event
Even with Bourbon Street bustling outside, nothing matched the buzzy energy of The Jazz Playhouse at The Royal Sonesta Hotel New Orleans as musicians David Shaw of the Revivalists and Tarriona 'Tank' Ball from Tank and the Bangas sat down with Rolling Stone senior music editor Joseph Hudak for the latest installment of the 'Musicians on Musicians' series in partnership with Sonesta International Hotels. Sitting on stage, closely surrounded by Sonesta Travel Pass guests and a lucky handful of their biggest fans, Shaw and Tank bonded over their unique artistry, friendship, and connections to New Orleans. 'The real focus is how place and location influence your creativity,' said Hudak, referring to the city's culture and how deeply entwined it is with both Shaw and Tank's music. 'I was a construction worker and also making music,' he said. Coming from what he described as 'cowshit and cornstalks,' New Orleans 'felt so different and foreign in such an amazing way…Immediately I could tell the city had a special feeling to it.' Still, he is careful to pay homage to the local musicians whose hard work and legacy have carved out the Crescent City as a premiere destination for great live music: 'Not being from here, it's really about respect and respecting the lineage.' As a spoken-word artist, Tank—who won her first Grammy in 2025 for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album with Tank and the Bangas' The Heart, The Mind, The Soul— got her start at local open mics. 'What made my open mic night really special is it was a poetry open mic and so I always felt so comfortable to be myself because the poets were so encouraging,' she recalled. It was this support and community that provided her with the space to create her signature combination of R&B and poetry. 'New Orleans is about authenticity,' Shaw added. 'Just be you and the wind will carry you.' Both artists have been fans of each other for a long time and recently played together at this year's Jazz and Heritage Festival. 'I love a good live show and I love a good live singer,' Tank gushed to Shaw. 'You're like a rock star to me!' Mentioning her influences (which range from poets Maya Angelou and Nicky to musicians like Queen and Tina Turner), she was also quick to add, 'The Revivalists are dope, too.' Asked what people get wrong about New Orleans music, Tank and Shaw encouraged visitors and locals alike to explore the city's culture beyond the big events like Mardi Gras. 'There's an underbelly of a different type of artistry that locals make come alive,' explained Tank. 'People in New Orleans entertain every day and half the time the music is free…They pour their life into it because it is a part of us.' Following the conversation, guests refreshed their cocktails, which included spicy palomas and local rye-based favorite the Vieux Carré, snacked on beignets, then settled in for intimate sets by both artists. Shaw, playing the acoustic guitar, kicked things off with 'Come Back Home' off his solo album Take a Look Inside. He then introduced a new song 'Lost and Found,' saying, 'It's probably my favorite song I've written in awhile…I'm a pretty shy guy, but—dammit—I'm proud of this one!' After more songs and stories, he reluctantly finished with 'When You Love Somebody,' telling the audience, 'Someone's gonna have to cut me off because I'm having too much fun.' Next, Tank took the stage with the Bangas, first playing the contagiously joyful 'Spaceships' from 2019's Green Balloon. The band's energy never flagged as they moved onto songs including 'Boxes and Squares' and a cover of fellow New Orleanian Louis Armstrong's 'What a Wonderful World,' with a special spoken word addition by Tank. Calling to the happy audience, she sang, 'If you love New Orleans, say it's a wonderful world!' Watch: Creatures escape in spaceship crash in 'Alien: Earth'
June 5 (UPI) -- FX and Hulu released the first full-length trailer for the eagerly awaited Alien: Earth series on Thursday. The sci-fi show is set to premiere on Aug. 12. Noah Hawley is its creator, executive producer and director. The Alien prequel will star Sydney Chandler, Timothy Olyphant, Alex Lawther, Samuel Blenkin, Babou Ceesay, Adrian Edmondson, David Rysdahl, Essie Davis, Lily Newmark, Erana James, Adarsh Gourav, Jonathan Ajayi, Kit Young, Diêm Camille, Moe Bar-El and Sandra Yi Sencindiver. "In the year 2120, the Earth is governed by five corporations: Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic and Threshold. In this Corporate Era, cyborgs (humans with both biological and artificial parts) and synthetics (humanoid robots with artificial intelligence) exist alongside humans," a synopsis released in May said. Thursday's 2-minute preview showed the residents of the futuristic Neverland Research Island facility on Earth trying to find and neutralize the predatory alien monsters who escaped in a space ship crash. Many of the characters share names with those that appear in the classic fairy tale Peter Pan, such as Wendy, Nibs, Tootles, Slightly and Smee.
