Not the news these boys wanted: Christian rock band responds to former lead singer's sexual assault, drug abuse allegations

Yahoo07-06-2025
TENNESSEE (WHNT) — The Newsboys, a Christian rock band, released a statement Thursday following allegations made against its former lead singer, Michael Tait.
Tait joined the Newsboys in 2009 after the former lead singer, Peter Furler, decided to take a step back into a supporting role with the group. 'Peter will continue with the band and his trademark songwriting and production will remain as he focuses his professional career toward future Newsboys recordings,' the band said in a statement on March 9, 2009.
After a successful 15 years with the band, Tait made an announcement on social media on Jan. 16, 2025, stating that he was leaving the band. You can read the full statement below:
'Fifteen years ago, my life was forever changed when I received the invite to step into the role of lead singer for Newsboys. The years since have been some of the most fulfilling, faith-filled, and rewarding years of my life. I have been on an amazing journey all over the globe, performing and ministering to people of all ages, races, and backgrounds. Together we wrote and produced music that I am deeply proud of – from 'Born Again' and 'We Believe' to 'Worldwide Revival' and of course, 'God's Not Dead.'
While this may come as a surprise given I've been touring ever since college, I've made for me what is a monumental and heartfelt decision that it is time to step down from Newsboys. This decision does not come lightly and has been a shock to even myself, but amidst prayer and fasting, I have clarity that this is the right decision. As we are reminded in Matthew 6:33, 'But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.' I truly believe these words and although nervous about the future, I am excited about what it holds for both myself, and for Newsboys, as we all seek first His kingdom and His righteousness.'
Michael Tait
The band then announced that its 'Worldwide Revival Nights' tour would still be happening as planned, stating that 'the next chapter is just beginning!'
However, this time post-Tait was not easy. The band announced on May 24 that the Canada tour would be cancelled due to a promoter breach. 'It is with deep disappointment that we announce the cancellation of all upcoming Newsboys Canada 2025 tour dates, scheduled for May 31-June 16, 2025.'
The breaches, according to the band, include 'failure to provide required artist deposits and confirm payment to supporting acts, failure to coordinate technical production and logistics with venues, failure to maintain communication with venue staff, artist management and tour partners and admission of inability to refund ticket holders due to prior financial commitments.'
Following this, the band said, 'We urge all affected fans to contact the original ticketing outlet or host venue regarding refund inquiries. If you experience difficulty securing a refund, we recommend contacting the appropriate provincial consumer protection office or the Competition Bureau of Canada.'
This was just the start of statements the band would have to make, as on June 5, the band released a statement saying how their hearts were 'shattered' when they heard about allegations made against former frontman Tait.
You can read the full statement below:
'Last night our hearts were shattered when we read the news alleging drug abuse and inappropriate sexual actions by our former lead singer, Michael Tait. While Michael has not addressed these allegations, we are devastated even by the implications.
First and foremost, our hearts are with the victims who have bravely shared their stories. If you are a victim, we urge you to come forward. We absolutely do not condone any form of sexual assault.
The four of us are husbands and fathers. Between the four of us, we have fourteen children. Our wives and children have made many sacrifices while we have dedicated our lives to playing music together that glorifies God. We are horrified, heartbroken, and angry at this report and in many ways, we feel as if we and our families have been deceived for the last fifteen years.
When he left the band in January, Michael confessed to us and our management that he 'had been living a double-life' but we never imagined that it could be this bad.'
Jeff, Jody, Duncan and Adam
The Newsboys are a Christian rock band formed in Australia in 1985. The band consisted of Peter Furler, George Perdikis, John James, Sean Taylor and Corey Pryor at the start. The band moved to the United States in late 1987 after getting signed with Refuge Communications. They released the album Read All About It in 1988.
Tait's allegations come from The Roys Report, a 'Christian media outlet, reporting the unvarnished truth about what's happening in the Christian community so the church can be reformed and restored,' its website says. It was founded by 'investigative journalist Julie Roys, The Roys Report began as a personal blog where Julie published her commentaries and occasional investigative pieces while working as a national radio host on Moody Radio. However, in 2018, Julie published a series of articles on her website, exposing corruption and mission drift at the Moody Bible Institute. This led to the exit of three top officers at Moody. It also ended Julie's relationship with Moody and changed the focus of Julie's website—from a blog offering cultural commentary to an independent Christian media outlet exposing corruption, abuse, and what's been termed the 'evangelical industrial complex.'
The exclusive article on TRR says Tait is accused of sexual assault, grooming and substance abuse dating back to 2004.
TRR says after a two and a half year investigation and speaking with alleged victims, 'Three men spoke to TRR, alleging that Tait befriended them individually on Christian music tours in 2004, 2010, and 2014. They were all 22 years old at the time.' You can read the full article that lists the allegations made against Tait on TRR website here.

Anna Delvey Denies Abandoning Bunnies in Brooklyn

In today's animal news, Anna Delvey—also known as Anna Sorokin—is declaring that she has nothing to do with the bunnies from her photoshoot that were abandoned in NYC's Prospect Park. Confused? Allow me to explain. Earlier this month, Anna did a photoshoot with bunnies on the streets of NYC. She posed in front of a subway stop with two leashed rabbits at her feet, right in front of her electronic ankle monitor. Days later, a few bunnies were spotted abandoned in Prospect Park, and rescuers online quickly identified them as the same ones used in Anna's shoot. A total of three bunnies believed to have been part of the photoshoot have since been rescued from the area. It's unclear how, exactly, the rabbits got released in the park, though an assistant on the shoot named Christian Batty has taken responsibility. In a since deleted Facebook post, he wrote in part (as reported by People), 'I lied to you, Anna, and the rest of the team about the rabbits. The truth is, I did abandon them in the park. It was wrong, cruel, and inexcusable, and I take full responsibility for my actions.' Christian continued, saying he panicked after being left with the bunnies (which he assumed would be returned to their owners) and believed that there were rabbits in Prospect Park. 'At 19, with no experience caring for animals, no pet-friendly housing, and no knowledge of available resources, I felt overwhelmed and made the worst possible choice,' he explained. Anna has denied any involvement, claiming in her Instagram Story that Christian had obtained the rabbits through Facebook Marketplace and 'intended to release them into Prospect Park.' Anna continued, 'As talent, it's not my job to source or return animals, but as an animal lover, I can promise I will never work with them again without knowing exactly where they come from and how they're getting home.' Anna also shared text messages purported to be between herself and the original owner of the bunnies, who gave the animals to Christian for the shoot. In the texts, the owner confirms that they never agreed to take the bunnies back after the photoshoot was over. 'Christian Batty lied for days about returning the rabbits. Turns out his plan all along was to dump them,' Anna wrote. Anna further proclaimed her innocence in another Instagram Story, claiming that her GPS ankle monitor 'handily rules me out of the most absurd crimes the outraged rabbit mob is frothing over.' She also uploaded what appears to be a receipt for a $1,000 donation to All About Rabbits Rescue. What's more, Anna is claiming to have had no involvement in the concepts or logistics of the shoot, saying she was contacted by the photographer Jasper Egan Soloff. However, Jasper's lawyer, Gary Adelman, has pushed back against this narrative. Speaking to The New York Times, Gary insisted that 'this was not Jasper's photo shoot' and stated, 'Jasper had no knowledge or input as to how the bunnies were obtained or what happened to them after the photo shoot.' Once reports of bunnies abandoned in Prospect Park made the rounds, vegan influencer Terry Chao—who claims to have been approached by Christian prior to the shoot—recognized them and went to rescue the two bunnies with some friends. Per her Instagram, a third bunny was later rescued with help from Christian, and they all remain in her care. Despite Anna's insistence that she was not involved with the mishandling of the animals used in her photoshoot, she doesn't seem thrilled by their rescuers. After Terry shared an Instagram Story of herself doing interviews about the ordeal, Anna reposted it, calling Terry a 'self-righteous clown' and accusing her of 'using rabbits as props and riling up the masses to send me more death threats.' Terry does not appear to have responded, but she is currently accepting donations to help care for the bunnies.

Sha'Carri Richardson Speaks Out After Domestic Violence Arrest: 'I Refuse To Run Away'

Sha'Carri Richardson broke her silence after being arrested and accused of domestic violence. In a video message shared to her Instagram story on Monday night (Aug. 11), the 25-year-old explained her plans to hold herself 'accountable' following the public incident in which the athlete was taken into custody during an airport encounter with her boyfriend, track star Christian Coleman. 'Hey y'all, it's Shacarri. More than anything, definitely a lot of self-reflection, a lot of understanding of not only putting myself in a compromising situation with somebody that I have a deep care and appreciation for as well, is something that — holding myself accountable,' detailed the Olympic medalist in the 24-hour-timed upload viewed by VIBE. 'I see myself. I'm taking this time to not only see myself but get myself a certain level of help that overall is going to reflect who I truly am in my heart and in my spirit, and not allowing this moment, but accepting this moment to be more.' 'So my only thing is, I want to be more — not just only for myself, for my family, my fans. I overly appreciate y'all supporting me and showing up, and even holding me accountable to being my best self. So more than anything, I refuse to run away … but face everything that comes to me head-on because everything on the other side is greater, but you gotta go through in order to get there,' she continued. 'I'm Sha'Carri y'all. I appreciate y'all. One love. Much love. Y'all be blessed.' On Tuesday morning, she followed the video message with words directed to Coleman. 'I apologize to Christian,' she declared. 'He came into my life and gave me more than a relationship but a greater understanding of unconditional love from what I've experienced in my past. Due to my past trauma and pain. I was blind and blocked off to not only receive it but give it.' The message continued to read, 'I love him and to him I can't apologize enough. My apologize should be as loud as my actions, honestly louder. To Christian, I love you and I am so sorry.' After news broke of the arrest, Coleman immediately offered support for Richardson. As previously reported, he declined to press charges and informed police officers that he did not want to be considered a victim. 'For me personally, I feel like it was a sucky situation all around,' Coleman explained. 'I don't feel like she should have been arrested. I mean, people have discussions and emotions and stuff like that. She has things that she needs to work on for herself, of course. So do I, so do you, so does everybody. But I'm the type of guy who's in the business of extending grace, and mercy, and love.' 'I hate the narrative, too. It's so negative… She's a human being and a great person. We've been able to be really good teammates all year… She's to me, she's the best female athlete in the world. I see it every day.' In surveillance footage from the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Richardson is seen shoving Coleman near a TSA Checkpoint, which resulted in law enforcement intervening. Following the incident, she was taken into custody and held for nearly 19 hours at the SCORE South Correctional Facility in Des Moines, Washington. VIBE has reached out to Richardson's team for a statement. Anna Delvey Bunny Photoshoot Controversy Explained

Last week, Anna 'Delvey' Sorokin shared a series of now-viral photos from an outdoor shoot with live bunnies. Anna — who was found guilty in 2019 of multiple fraud charges, including second-degree grand larceny and theft of services, after pretending to be a wealthy German heiress — held the two rabbits on a leash as she posed around New York and flaunted her ankle monitor. This sparked a heap of backlash under Anna's post, with several internet users calling her out for using the animals as 'photo props' and allegedly 'dumping' them right afterwards. Now, Anna has addressed the uproar in a lengthy Instagram statement. 'As many of you are aware, I recently did a shoot with Jasper Soloff involving live rabbits. Christian Batty, a member of the hair team I briefly met during a fashion week event last year, responded that he knew someone who could lend us bunnies for a few hours,' she wrote. 'I later discovered that, instead of borrowing animals from a legitimate source like he claimed, he had obtained them via Facebook Marketplace and intended to release them into Prospect Park, a plan of which I had no knowledge. The idea that someone would compromise the well-being of innocent animals for personal networking opportunities is deeply disturbing to me,' Anna claimed. Anna later shared a series of alleged screenshots of texts between herself, Christian, Jasper, and publicist Kelly Cutrone. In the alleged messages, Jasper appeared to ask Christian if the rabbits they used were the same animals that were abandoned, to which Christian seemingly admitted that he had 'dumped' the bunnies. 'I was panicking with bunnies. That's the reason I dumped them,' he allegedly wrote after claiming that the original owners of the rabbits had 'blocked' him when he attempted to contact them to return them after the shoot. We'll keep you posted if anything else unfolds. Let us know what you think in the comments.
