Beaten up at police station in Ghaziabad, says man; cops claim drunk driving
A subsequent medical examination confirmed that the man had consumed liquor, police said.
In a video shared on social media, Hariom, a resident of Bulandshahr, claimed that he was stopped by police officers shortly after picking up a friend, who was coming from Delhi with cancer medication. He alleged that despite showing the necessary documents, the cops misbehaved with him and his friend.
ACP (Modinagar) Gyan Prakash Rai said a complaint was received via social media from Hariom. Upon investigation, it was found that on June 28, a campaign was underway against public drinking and drunk driving. When the police enquired about the documents, the person failed to provide them and began misbehaving. Police added that their bike had a modified horn. Therefore, the vehicle was seized under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act and they were booked under Section 34 of the Police Act, later released as per procedure.

Rights panel orders probe into death of two-wheeler rider in Kochi
The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has registered two suo motu cases on the death of two two-wheeler riders by speeding private buses in Kochi. The latest case was the death of Muhammed Salim, 42, a resident of Kodungalloor, employed by an online aggregator, after being knocked down by a private bus near the South Kalamassery flyover on Monday. Commission Chairperson Alexander Thomas directed District Police Chief (Kochi City) to assign an officer not less than the rank of an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) to probe the accident to bring the guilty to book and extent maximum punishment. He urged the authorities to remain alert, function efficiently, and take stringent measures to ensure that no more lives are lost on roads due to speeding private buses. The Commission sought a report from the ACP after looking into aspects like whether a case had been registered against the driver concerned and whether the same bus had been involved in accidents before. Apart from the registration of criminal cases, actions that can be taken under the Motor Vehicles Act against drivers causing such accidents should be submitted to the Commission. The Commission should also be informed about the details of cases registered by the police in connection with accidents caused by private buses due to overspeeding and reckless driving, and the precautionary measures taken by the police. The Regional Transport Officer (RTO) should submit a separate report. Steps should be taken by the District Collector, RTO, and the Transport Commissioner for the protection of commuters and pedestrians. Last month, the Commission had taken a suo motu case after a first-year graduate student, Govind P. Shenoy, 18, was fatally knocked down by a speeding private bus at Ernakulam North. In that case, the Ernakulam Town North police had booked the driver with the non-bailable charge of culpable homicide amounting to murder.

CPI(M) condemns police clampdown, arrests in Karedu village
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) State Committee has strongly condemned the 'forcible and illegal attempt' by the government to acquire land from farmers in Karedu village, Nellore district, for the IndoSol company. In a statement on Tuesday (August 5, 2025), CPI(M) State Secretary V. Srinivasa Rao accused the government of creating fear and confusion among villagers to extract land consent by coercion, despite local farmers' resistance. The revenue officials had reportedly entered the village and started collecting Aadhaar numbers, land documents, and passbooks from each household. When villagers refused to comply, they were allegedly intimidated. During the standoff, leaders of the Rythu Sangham and Agricultural Workers' Union, including Kumar, Pullayya, and G. Venkateswarlu, were arrested and taken to Ulavapadu police station, according to CPI(M). The CPI(M) leader alleged that Section 30 of the Police Act was imposed across the entire Ulavapadu Mandal, and police posts were set up surrounding Karedu village, effectively placing the village under siege. 'False cases are being filed against farmer leaders. People are being prevented from holding meetings. All of this is part of a plan to illegally seize land by instilling fear,' he alleged. CPI(M) demanded immediate withdrawal of the police siege, release of the arrested farmer and union leaders, respect for the Gram Sabha resolution opposing land acquisition, and withdrawal of the land acquisition notification for the IndoSol project. He said the public resistance would be intensified if these demands are not met and called the current actions unconstitutional and undemocratic.

Delhi man shot dead near Gurgaon's Kherki Daula Toll Plaza; second shooting incident in SPR area in 3 weeks
A Delhi resident was shot dead in Gurgaon Monday night in what is the second incident involving a shooting in public in the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) area in three weeks. The deceased has been identified as Rohit Shokeen, 39, son of Mahaveer Singh, a resident of Kamruddin Nagar in Delhi's Nangloi, which comes under the Nihal Vihar police station limits. He was gunned down off the SPR Road close to Kherki Daula Toll Plaza in Sector 77 at around 9 pm, the police said. 'The incident is believed to have stemmed from a long-standing property dispute,' a spokesperson for the Gurgaon police said early on Tuesday. 'A detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances behind the murder. A First Information Report (FIR) will be registered, and further action will be taken based on the evidence collected,' the spokesperson added. According to the police, Shokeen sustained three gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital after Virender Saini, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Manesar, and multiple police teams reached the site after receiving information about a wounded man. Shokeen was declared dead on arrival at the hospital, sources indicated. Authorities have yet to make any arrests in this connection, but police teams remained at the site until at least midnight. The development comes a little over a fortnight after Haryanvi singer-rapper Rahul Fazilpuria, 35, was shot at in the Southern Peripheral Road section near Badshahpur in Gurgaon's Sector 71. He had escaped unhurt in the incident. Fazilpuria was allegedly standing near his SUV when the attackers arrived in another car and opened fire. Soon after, the singer got into his car and sped away. The attacker could not chase him due to the traffic, and he reportedly managed to escape. According to Fazilpuria, the attackers fired at him multiple times, but he was not injured and his vehicle was not damaged. Soon, the police arrested a Sonepat resident who allegedly carried out the recce for the shooting. Later, a post surfaced on social media in which a person claimed responsibility for the shooting and said it was the fallout of a financial dispute involving Rs 5 crore that the singer had allegedly not repaid. CCTV footage had also emerged of a Tata Punch car following the singer prior to the shooting.
