Parvesh's visit to CP opens floodgates of Oppn. flak over monsoon readiness
A day after heavy rain left several parts of Delhi waterlogged, leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continued to exchange barbs on Sunday over the city's flood preparedness.
The verbal duels intensified after Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh visited Connaught Place to inspect drainage issues, prompting AAP to accuse him of 'waking up 24 hours after the city drowned' rather than being on the ground during the crisis.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi received 26.6 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday, with no downpour recorded between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. More showers are likely daily until August 16.
Mr. Singh said he had visited the Connaught Place site late on Saturday when heavy rain caused waterlogging along a 100-metre stretch near the popular Kake Da Hotel area.
'Century-old problem'
He blamed the problem on a century-old British-era barrel drainage system that has been altered over the years, causing severe flow restrictions.
'To ease the load, we have installed two high-capacity pumps to push water forward more efficiently,' he said, adding that the Public Works Department is conducting a detailed study to find permanent fixes.
The Minister highlighted that 34 critical waterlogging points, including Zakhira Underpass, Minto Bridge, Moolchand, and ITO, remained water-free this year, a change he credited to the government's interventions.
'This year, water accumulation on PWD roads has been significantly lower. We are working on every point and will ensure that in the coming years, Delhi will be completely free from waterlogging,' Mr. Singh said.
AAP's Delhi chief Saurabh Bharadwaj accused Mr. Singh of conducting a delayed and meaningless inspection.
'Fooling people'
'Does Parvesh Verma even own a watch? Someone should gift him one. Waterlogging happened on Saturday, a child drowned in an open sewer on Saturday, and now, on Sunday, when not a drop of water is on the streets, he is inspecting Connaught Place. Who is he trying to fool?' he said.
Mr. Bharadwaj asked why the Minister had not visited the families of the seven persons who had died when a wall collapsed in Jaitpur on Saturday.
Expressing grief over the deaths, Mr. Singh called it 'an unfortunate and heartbreaking incident' and promised steps to ensure such tragedies never occur again.

Emma recalls the day Trump asked for a date
Washington: Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson has joked about Donald Trump "stalking" her after the now-US president called her to ask her on a date the very same day her divorce was finalised. The 66-year-old British actress said she could have "changed the course of American history," had she accepted his offer. Speaking at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland on August 8, where she received the Leopard Club Award for her career achievements, Thompson recounted the surprising call she got from Trump while filming the 1998 dramedy 'Primary Colors'. Thompson said she was in her trailer when the phone rang, and answering, she heard him say, "Hello, this is Donald Trump." 'I thought it was a joke and asked, 'How can I help you? Maybe he needed directions from someone,'' Thompson told The Telegraph. Donald Trump then invited her, saying, 'I'd love you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner.' Her response was, 'Well, that's very sweet. Thank you so much. I'll get back to you.' Thompson said, 'I realised that on that day, my divorce decree had come through. And I bet he's got people looking for suitable people he could take out on his arm. You know, a nice divorcee, that's what he was looking for.' She added, 'And he found the number in my trailer. I mean, that's stalking.'

Where Only India's Prime Minister Can Hoist The National Flag: The Secrets Of Red Fort's Lahori Gate Revealed
New Delhi: Historic Red Fort hosts flag hoisting ceremony every year on August 15 to mark India's Independence Day anniversary. Prime minister unfurls the tricolor from its Lahori Gate. This tradition is unique because only the Prime Minister of India can hoist the national flag from this iconic gate. The Lahori Gate holds stories that span from the era of slavery to India's freedom struggle. Here are five lesser-known tales connected to this landmark. The name Lahori Gate dates back to the Mughal era. This gate marked the starting point of the road that led directly to Lahore, now part of Pakistan. During Mughal times, royal processions used this route, making the gate a symbol of Delhi's grandeur and power. This historical connection explains why the gate carries the name of Lahore. History tells us that the British ruled India for nearly 200 years. After brutally suppressing the 1857 revolt, the British hoisted their Union Jack at the Lahori Gate, holding the country in colonial chains. This place became a symbol of oppression. Today, it stands as the site where the Indian flag waves proudly, representing freedom and dignity. Netaji's Dream Fulfilled in 1947 On October 21, 1943, following the formation of the Azad Hind government led by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, there was a dream to hoist the INA flag at the Red Fort. Though that dream remained unfulfilled then, the freedom struggle marched on. India finally gained independence in 1947, and Netaji's vision was realised when the Indian flag was raised at the Lahori Gate. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru became India's first prime minister. On August 15, 1947, he hoisted the tricolor for the first time at the Lahori Gate and addressed the nation. This tradition continues to this day, marking the beginning of Independence Day celebrations every year. Since independence, the honour of hoisting the flag at Lahori Gate has been reserved exclusively for the prime minister and only once a year, on August 15. The ceremony is accompanied by a 21-gun salute, filling the entire nation with pride. These salutes are fired from the nearby cannons using blank rounds that produce sound and smoke but no actual projectiles. These untold stories of the Lahori Gate remind us of India's journey from slavery to freedom, symbolised by the flag fluttering high each Independence Day.

79th Independence Day Celebrations: The day begins with the Prime Minister hoisting the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi, followed by an address to the nation. 79th Independence Day Of India: On August 15, India will celebrate its 79th Independence Day, commemorating the nation's hard-fought freedom from 200 years of British colonial rule in 1947. Recognised as a national holiday, Independence Day is marked by official ceremonies and patriotic fervour across the country. The day begins with the Prime Minister hoisting the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi, followed by an address to the nation. The occasion stirs a deep sense of pride and gratitude among citizens, honouring the sacrifices of the freedom fighters who paved the way for India's independence. Across the country, people participate in flag-hoisting ceremonies, sing the national anthem, and engage in parades, cultural performances, and patriotic workshops—celebrating the spirit of unity and sovereignty. Independence Day History And Significance On August 15, 1947, India awoke to the light of freedom, breaking the chains of over two centuries of British colonial rule. It was a defining moment in history, marked by the country's long-awaited 'tryst with destiny," as eloquently declared by independent India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in his iconic midnight speech. That day, as Nehru hoisted the tricolour for the first time, a new chapter began for a nation rising from oppression into sovereignty. Since then, Independence Day has been observed with formal celebrations across the country. The sitting Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi and addresses the nation, remembering the immense courage and sacrifice of the freedom fighters and leaders who shaped India's struggle for independence. Educational institutions across India commemorate the day by organising cultural performances, flag hoisting, and interactive workshops that highlight the freedom movement, instil patriotic values, and honour the spirit of the Constitution. The day serves as both a remembrance and a celebration of India's hard-won liberty and its ongoing journey as a democratic republic. Independence Day 2025 Theme No official theme has been announced yet for Independence Day 2025. However, given that the government of India typically bases the theme for the day on values of unity, patriotism, and progress, it is anticipated that this year will likely be focused on these, in addition to honouring the legacy of Indian freedom fighters. Independence Day 2025 Celebrations The ceremony at the Red Fort begins with the presentation of a Guard of Honour by the Armed Forces and the Delhi Police to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This is followed by the unfurling of the National Flag, accompanied by the singing of the National Anthem and a 21-Gun Salute. Helicopters of the Indian Air Force shower flower petals during the event. The Prime Minister then addresses the nation. Immediately after the speech, the National Anthem is sung once again. The ceremony concludes with the release of tri-coloured balloons. 79th Independence Day Guestlist The central government will honour 50 of Delhi's top-performing Swachhta Karamcharis by inviting them as special guests to the Independence Day ceremony at the iconic Red Fort. According to officials, each zonal office has been instructed to nominate five sanitation workers—three women and two men—from their respective areas, along with their spouses, and submit the names to the Ministry of Defence. The final selection will be based on the workers' performance and their contributions to maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in their zones. The Delhi Environmental Management Services (DEMS) headquarters has been appointed as the nodal agency responsible for compiling the list of invitees, as per an order accessed by news agency PTI.
