Wayne Rooney clocks in for first Match of the Day shift after Man United and England legend landed '£800,000' BBC deal to become regular on the show

Wayne Rooney was pictured arriving for his debut appearance on Match of the Day at BBC 's studios on Sunday. Rooney turned up at 10:30am to formally kick off his new role as a regular pundit for the broadcaster. The former Manchester United and England captain is believed to have signed a lucrative deal worth around £800,000 a year to join the iconic football highlights programme. Arriving at the dock10 studios in MediaCityUK, Salford, Rooney looked confident as he walked past photographers and into the Match of the Day production hub. Rooney's transition from management to broadcasting comes after spells at Plymouth Argyle, Derby County, DC United and Birmingham City. The 39-year-old has been out of a job since leaving Argyle by mutual consent on New Year's Eve after a challenging seven-month spell in charge. Rooney has made no secret of his enjoyment of punditry since stepping back from coaching, occasionally appearing on Amazon Prime Video for Champions League coverage last season. Speaking to talkSPORT in June, he appeared to hint that his immediate future would involve more media work than management. He told the radio station: 'Obviously just doing some TV work at the minute, so that's what I'm doing. I'm enjoying it. So, that's where I'll be.' Rooney's switch also comes as Match of the Day move into a new era following Gary Lineker's controversial departure. Lineker confirmed his departure from the BBC in May and 'apologised unreservedly' after being accused of anti-semitism by sharing a someone else's social media post. The England legend left the BBC without a pay-off from his £1.4million salary while he, Shearer and Micah Richards have continued to work together on the hugely popular 'The Rest is Football' podcast. Lineker presented Match of the Day since 1999, with his 26-year reign making him the longest presenter in the show's history.

New Match of the Day host Mark Chapman finds love again after wife's death

New Match of the Day host Mark Chapman finds love again after wife's death The BBC presenter is in the Match of the Day hotseat as the iconic highlights show enters a new era Chapman will host the first Match of the Day of the new season It's the start of a new Premier League season, and the beginning of a new era for Match of the Day, with long-time host Gary Lineker no longer in the presenter's chair. ‌ The former England striker hosted the iconic highlights show for 26 years, but announced last year that he would be stepping away from the role at the end of the 2024/25 season. He had been scheduled to continue presenting the BBC's live FA Cup broadcasts, and front coverage of next year's FIFA World Cup, but he has now left the broadcaster for good after sparking outrage. ‌ Lineker came under fire after sharing a social media post on Zionism which featured a rat, which has historically been used as an anti-semitic insult in reference to language used by Nazi Germany towards Jewish people. While he removed the post and issued a public apology, it was later confirmed that he would leave the BBC early, signing off from the corporation on the final day of last season. ‌ When his departure was first announced, it was confirmed that a three-presenter team of Gabby Logan, Mark Chapman and Kelly Cates would take up hosting duties, and it is Chapman that is set to kick off proceedings on the first day of the 2025/26 campaign. The 51-year-old has become one of the most recognisable and well-liked faces in sports broadcasting over the years, having also fronted coverage of rugby league, the NFL and the Olympics alongside a host of football tournaments. But while Chapman is at the top of his game, his professional achievements have come against the backdrop of a brutally difficult period in his personal life, with the presenter tragically losing his wife Sara to cancer five years ago. Article continues below The couple got married in 2001 and went on to have three children together, with Sara fighting the disease for many years before sadly passing away in June 2020 at the age of just 44. At the time, a source told The Sun: 'Sadly Sara passed away on June 3. Mark and the kids are absolutely devastated. "The family was there and it's just a really sad situation. They're an extremely private family and would appreciate people respecting that.' ‌ Mark Chapman's wife Sara (pictured) died aged 44 (Image: Twitter) While he and his family were understandably left heartbroken by the loss, however, Chapman has now found love again, with it revealed last year that he had started a relationship with estate agent Clere Collier. Ms Collier, who is believed to be seven years younger than the presenter, has paid tribute to him on social media, describing him as her "one love". ‌ On Chapman's birthday last year, the estate agent - who is based in Dubai but reportedly makes regular trips over to the UK - shared a photo of the BBC star, writing: "Happy birthday to this one. My one love. "So proud of all you do, the biggest heart, the kindest soul, the leader of our pack and not to mention devilishly handsome. I love you, happy 51." The Sun reports that Chapman's new partner previously worked at an agency in Hampstead in north London and was known as a "socialite", with her celebrity friends including actors, singers and radio DJ Chris Moyles. The most painful reality TV injuries ever, from torn vulva to 'accidental C-sec

Celebrity SAS contestant Lucy Spraggan has recently made headlines after suffering one of the most painful injuries in TV history. Sharing details of the grisly injury, she described how she 'tore' her vulva while filming the reality TV competition. 'I ripped my labia – it was bad,' she told The Sun. 'That's not a common injury. Actually, genuinely, that's never been the same, so much so I'm having some surgery soon to correct it.' She went on to say how she didn't really know what had happened to cause the tear, guessing only that the harness she had been wearing 'was tight'. Lucy's injury may have been one of the worst suffered by a reality TV contestant, but she's far from the only one to have been gravely injured in the name of entertainment. As you might expect from a show which has celebrities speeding around an ice rink with sharp blades attached to their feet, Dancing on Ice has had no shortage of casualties over the years. The most serious of these was perhaps Olympian Greg Rutherford, who suffered a grisly injury when he fell and landed on his own ice skate. During the long and painful recovery period, Greg likened the injury to 'having a C-section.' In 2021, Denise van Outen was forced to pull out after an accident left her with three bone fractures and a partial dislocation. Talking about the incident on Instagram afterwards, Denise described the pain as 'unbearable.' Greg and Denise join the likes of Jennifer Ellison (who kicked herself in the head with her own skate), Josh Jones (injured during rehearsals) and Keith Chegwin, who suffered cracked ribs on the first day of the competition. In 2018, Love Island star Dani Dyer was forced to drop out of the South Africa-set ITV2 series after only one day. The injury occurred as Dani went headfirst down a waterslide, dislocating her shoulder on the way down. A source said: 'Dani knew straight away she had done serious damage but tried to continue as she didn't want to seem like a wuss. It was too much, though, and she was taken to the hospital.' Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle's injuries sustained while filming ski competition The Jump are considered by many to be the worstto ever happen on a reality TV show. Beth was airlifted to hospital during rehearsals for the Channel 4 show, which took place at the show's ski jump set in Austria in 2016. According to Beth's lawyer, she sustained serious injuries, which included two fractured vertebrae, and required surgery on her spinal cord. In 2019, it was reported that Beth was suing the show's makers for £200,000 in damages. She claimed that she has never fully recovered from the incident, saying at the time: 'It's been a long journey and my recovery is still ongoing. I'm not sure I'll ever be 100% again.' A statement by production company TwoFour said: 'This matter is being dealt with by our insurers and we are unable to comment as the claim is ongoing.' Beth was one of many celebrities who sustained serious injuries on the show, including Tina Hobley (broken arm), Mark-Francis Vandelli (fractured his ankle), Rebecca Adlington (dislocated shoulder) and Sarah Harding (injured knee). Following these high-profile celebrity injuries, The Jump was put on indefinite hiatus in 2018. After injuring his leg during training for the ITV diving competition Splash! Crimewatch presenter Rav Wilding was rushed to hospital with a blood clot on a lung on New Year's Eve. Not only did Rav's injury spoil his Christmas, but he also struggled to find work afterwards, and was forced to cancel his wedding to fiancée Jill Morgan. 'It breaks my heart that Jill and I had to cancel our wedding,' he told The Guardian at the time. When former MP Louise Mensch took part in the Channel 4 series in 2019, she was forced to drop out after ripping a muscle. 'After I quit, which I had to, I was completely injured, I wasn't going to let the team take punishment for me,' she told 'Every step was painful and they had me checked out at hospital and I had a three and a half centimetre rip in the back of my muscle, so literally every step was painful.' Not quite as grisly as a torn vulva, but still pretty painful. Former EastEnders star Nigel Harman had been one of the favourites to win Strictly in 2023. While his fortunes ultimately varied on the show, his journey came to an end when he broke a rib while training for the quarter-finals. He explained: 'I was leaping off a rostrum, and was about to be caught by some very handsome men, and as I flew, I was Peter Pan, and as I landed, I was in A&E. 'It's quite painful. This hasn't really sunk in. I've been avoiding Katya all day because that makes it really real as well.' It's not just the contestants who need to watch out; sometimes, the hosts find themselves in harm's way. More Trending While rehearsing for I'm A Celebrity spin-off Extra Camp in 2018, host Joel Dommett suffered a gnarly injury when he was struck on the head with a sign. He was subsequently rushed to hospital, where he was given seven stitches and the day off to recover. Before that, in 2005, former Neighbours star Kimberley Davies fractured a rib after jumping 15ft from a helicopter in a Bushucker trial. View More » Kimberley returned to camp but quit mere hours later, after being unable to cope with the immense pain. Got a story?
