Dubai's RTA Launches Short Film Competition For Students
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a new competition aimed at university and postgraduate filmmakers, encouraging them to create short films that address the causes and risks of traffic accidents.
The initiative, called the Road Safety Film Festival, is designed to raise awareness about road safety among young people.
The competition features three categories, with first-place winners in each receiving certificates of achievement, recognition, and cash prizes. The categories focus on key traffic challenges: sudden lane departures, driving distractions, and unsafe behaviours involving bicycles and electric scooters.
Submissions will open on 7 April 2025 and close on 14 July 2025. Participants can submit their entries through the competition portal on the RTA website at rta.ae/roadsafetyfilmfestival, where they can find detailed information on eligibility, evaluation criteria, and submission guidelines.

The competition is open to university students aged 18 to 35, with entries accepted individually or in teams of up to three members. Multiple entries are allowed, provided that all films are original and made by the students or teams. The goal is to create films that contribute meaningfully to road safety awareness.
Ahmed Al Khzaimy, Director of Traffic at RTA's Traffic and Roads Agency, explained: 'The competition empowers students to showcase their creativity through impactful films that promote traffic safety within the community.'
'RTA has allocated cash prizes for the top three winners in each category. This aligns with the objectives of Dubai's Traffic Safety Strategy, which emphasises raising awareness among school and university students — particularly those in university, who are a capable and active segment of youth,' he added.
'The film topics were selected based on traffic statistics that show lane departures and distractions as leading causes of fatal accidents. The third category addresses the rise in unsafe behaviors among bicycle and e-scooter users,' Al Khzaimy concluded.

Dubai's RTA to Add 6 New Bus, Taxi Lanes to Cut Travel Time
Dubai will expand its dedicated bus and taxi lanes, adding six new ones spanning 13km. The expansion is expected to reduce journey times by 41 per cent and improve bus arrival times by 42 per cent, according to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). It will encourage public transport use and help alleviate traffic congestion, said Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA. The authority previously announced that the lanes would be introduced on six major streets: Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, 2nd of December, Al Satwa, Al Nahda, Omar bin Al Khattab, and Naif. With this, the total length of dedicated lanes will reach 20km. The special lanes are marked with a distinctive red colour to prevent private vehicle drivers from mistakenly using them. Motorists caught driving on these lanes can be fined Dh600. The expansion was announced as the RTA revealed that its buses now cover nearly 90 per cent of Dubai. Its fleet of 1,390 buses completes 11,000 daily trips, transporting over 500,000 riders and covering approximately 333,000km. 'The RTA is committed to enhancing the public bus service to encourage residents to choose public transport for their daily commutes. We aim to improve connectivity between residential, commercial, and industrial areas by seamlessly integrating the bus service with the Dubai Metro. Buses serve as a vital link to other modes of transport, such as the metro, tram, and taxis,' said Al Tayer. UAE: RTA to auction premium Dubai number plates
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is set to hold its 79th online auction for exclusive number plates, offering 350 distinctive plates consisting of three, four, and five-digit combinations for private vehicles, classic vehicles, and motorcycles. The auction includes plates bearing codes H through Z, covering the following categories: H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z Registration for the auction opens on Monday May 19 2025, and will remain open for five days only. The auction will go live on Monday, May 26, 2025. All sales are subject to a 5 per cent Value Added Tax (VAT), and all participants must hold a valid traffic file in the Emirate of Dubai. To participate, bidders are required to submit a security cheque payable to RTA amounting AED5,000, along with a non-refundable participation fee of AED120. Payments can be made at the Customer Happiness Centres in Umm Ramool, Al Barsha, and Deira, or via credit card through the RTA website. The auction terms also require successful bidders to complete payment within 10 working days from the auction's closing date. Payments can be made at authorised service provider centres as follows: cash for amounts up to AED50,000, and certified cheque or credit card for amounts exceeding AED50,000. Transactions may also be completed at Customer Happiness Centres or via the RTA's website.

Dubai to roll out autonomous taxis in Q1 2026
Dubai is expected to roll out autonomous taxi service in the city during the first quarter of 2026. Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has an ambitious roadmap for deploying autonomous taxis across the city. HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, was briefed on the roadmap during a visit to RTA, said a Wam news agency report. As part of this initiative, the RTA has signed agreements with three leading international companies specialising in autonomous taxi operations. During the first phase, over 60 vehicles will be deployed to carry out road mapping, data collection, and route scanning. The second phase will see pilot operations launched in up to 65 designated zones across the emirate, chosen according to several key criteria, with a particular focus on Dubai's high road safety standards. This roadmap represents a major milestone in advancing Dubai's Self-Driving Transport Strategy, which aims to convert 25% of all mobility journeys in the city to autonomous modes by 2030.
