'Needs to go now': Parker calls for premiership-winning NRL coach to stand down
NRL great Corey Parker has claimed the Titans might need to look to the future as soon as possible with coach Des Hasler shutting down speculation over a future career decision after his side's latest loss. Hasler has been under plenty of pressure in 2025 to turn around the form of the Titans with their loss to an injury-hit Parramatta Eels side seeing them drop to last on 12 points.
While injuries to Keano Kini, David Fifita and most recently Jayden Campbell haven't helped his cause, the Titans are struggling again in 2025 having struggled to string two wins together. They finished 14th last year and unless they can turn around their from it could be looking worse in 2025.
Hasler's job security has been questioned after a lean run of results and speculation has emerged he could even be looking at retirement after his current contract. This appeared to frustrate the coach who denied the rumours after the game against the Eels.
And former Broncos and Queensland forward Parker feels the Titans need to know if Hasler is looking to make a call on his career, which could prompt an immediate decision. 'There has been some talk about Des Hasler and that he is potentially going to retire at the end of the season,' he said on SEN Radio on Tuesday.
'If that is true, then Dezzy needs to go now. If he is going to retire, he needs to go now. Only Des and management will know if he is going to go and they bring in someone with the credentials to take over or Jim Lenihan. There is no upside if he is going to go.'
Speaking after the game against the Eels, Hasler was not impressed with the speculation going around about his next move. 'No, they're just whispers, mate. It's just rumour and innuendo," Hasler said of the speculation he is going to retire.
'I don't know if there's speculation that's been reported, but obviously, sitting in last position that we don't want to be in. We thought coming in like it's very tight there at the bottom. In those sides, it's pretty congested.'
A premiership-winning coach at the Manly Sea Eagles, Hasler was brought into fix the Titans with many feeling they have been underperforming with their current roster. Up to six players in the squad have played State of Origin at some point with two representatives currently in the team. There is plenty of depth at the club, despite No.1 fullback Kini being ruled out for the season.
And The Courier Mail reporter Travis Head agreed with Parker and felt the Titans could be better of making a call sooner in a bid to turn their playing group around. Although he didn't blame Hasler for all the results going against them in recent years.
'Maybe they should just cut ties,' he said. 'The noise is getting louder and louder. If they're planning to move him out at the end of the year just cut him out, it's another failed experiment. There's a soft underbelly at the club, Des was meant to fix that but it takes more than a coach to fix that.'
Earlier this year, the Daily Telegraph's Michael Carayannis reported there were clauses in Hasler's deal that stated if Gold Coast are mathematically out of finals contention later in the season, then the Titans can decide to part ways with the veteran coach then and there. 'He originally signed a three-year deal but there's clauses in his deal and one of those is a top-eight clause,' Carayannis said.
'That is if they don't make the top eight this year, the Titans are under no obligation to keep him at the club next yet. There's another element to it and that's if when they are mathematically no chance of playing finals footy, they can split immediately."

Titans' Jackson Slater has a higher Madden rating than No. 1 pick Cam Ward
Earlier on Tuesday, the beta rankings for the Tennessee Titans for Madden 26 were leaked. The team found its way out of the NFL's basement, coming in at No. 26. This ranking somewhat mirrors the real-life expectations around the franchise, who see themselves as having made significant upgrades during the offseason and should be much improved from the disastrous 2024 team that was put on the field. Now, a few hours later, the individual player rankings have begun to trickle out, and the first batch to hit social media was the Titans' 2025 rookie class. If you thought Cam Ward, the league's first-overall selection in the 2025 NFL draft, would be at the top of the list, you'd be highly mistaken. Nope, Ward did not top the list; that honor would go to fifth-round selection Jackson Slater, the small-school guard who will likely be competing for a depth role as a rookie. The rankings even came as a surprise to Slater, who appeared to have a good laugh about it on social media. Slater should be surprised, as the rating of Ward with only a 71 overall score is low, especially considering his pedigree as the No. 1 pick. But, much like the rest of the disrespect he has received during and after the draft season, it is likely that it will be used as fuel to motivate him even more. These player rankings mean little in the grand scheme of the NFL, but they do touch on the potential Slater brings to the interior of the offensive line. Coming from Sacramento State, Slater more than held his own at the Senior Bowl and eventually found his way to Nashville via the draft. He should come in and help solidify the depth along the interior of the offensive line as a rookie.

Tennessee Titans given modest team rating in Madden 26 beta
The Tennessee Titans have been widely viewed as one of the worst teams in the NFL by analysts post-draft and heading into training camp, and for good reason. The team is coming off back-to-back brutal seasons and earned the top pick in the draft after their 2024 debacle. While excitement is building around the facility in Nashville, speculation will continue until the season begins, leaving people to rely on history as their guide. This includes the world of fantasy and video games, where Tennessee has seen its stock rise out of the basement in the popular Madden video game series. Team rankings from this year's version (beta) -- Madden '26 -- have been released, and the Titans are not the lowest-rated of the NFL's current 32 teams. They come in at No. 26, ahead of three of their opponents, including the Denver Broncos, whom they will face in the season opener. Remarkably, the game engineers are tapping into the potential of the young talent on the roster and have the team on an upward trajectory. Football analysts often fail to do so during their power rankings, consistently placing the Titans at the bottom of the league entering training camp. While the official release of Madden NFL 26 is still several weeks out, uStadium got its hands on the Madden NFL 26 beta team ratings for all 32 teams in the NFL, meaning these rankings could change. The team rankings will not be final until the game is officially released to the public, which is tentatively scheduled for August 14.

England lay foundation for victory charge against India
India's Jasprit Bumrah bowls in the first Test against England at Headingley (Darren Staples) Openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett held firm with an unbroken century stand against a Jasprit Bumrah-led attack to give England hope of a remarkable last-day win in the first Test against India on Tuesday. England were 117-0 at lunch at Headingley on Tuesday, needing a further 254 runs to reach a target of 371, with Crawley 42 not out and Duckett unbeaten on 64. Advertisement The closest India came to separating the pair was just before the interval when Bumrah, in his second spell, dropped an exceptionally tough low, left-handed caught and bowled chance from Crawley's drive. If England achieve their target, it will be just behind their record fourth-innings chase of 378 against India at Edgbaston three years ago. And it would be the second-highest chase in a Test at Headingley, surpassing their 362-9 against Australia in 2019 when current captain Ben Stokes' unbeaten century secured a stunning one-wicket Ashes win. England resumed on 21-0 -- needing exactly 350 more runs to go 1-0 up in this five-match series. Advertisement Crawley (12 not out) and Duckett (nine not out) were confronted with the daunting task of facing Bumrah, the world's top-ranked Test bowler and fresh from a five-wicket haul in the first innings, in overcast conditions. It was not long before Bumrah got a ball to jag sharply past the outside edge of Duckett's bat. But India squandered a review when Mohammed Siraj tried to overturn an lbw verdict in favour of Crawley, on 21, when replays indicated the ball would have missed leg stump. The openers managed just 42 runs in Tuesday's first 12 overs -- a relatively sedate run-rate in England's aggressive 'Bazball' era. Advertisement But they denied India a breakthrough in a session where they scored 96 runs in 24 overs. England cashed in on the other members of the India attack as left-hander Duckett drove and pulled Prasidh Krishna for two boundaries on his way to a 66-ball fifty including eight fours. India's Rishabh Pant had become only the second wicketkeeper to score two hundreds in a Test when he made 118 on Sunday to follow his first-innings 134. But, despite five individual centuries in this match, India would have been in an even stronger position had they not suffered collapses of 7-41 and 6-31 at the back end of each innings. jdg/kca/jc
