Chinas economy lags in July under pressure from tariffs, weak property market
Bangkok, Aug 15 (AP) China's economy showed signs of slowing in July as factory output and retail sales slowed and housing prices dropped further, according to data released Friday. Uncertainty over tariffs on exports to the United States is still looming over the world's second-largest economy after President Donald Trump extended a pause in sharp hikes in import duties for 90 days, beginning Monday, following a 90-day pause that began in May. As officials worked toward a broader trade agreement, China reported earlier that its exports surged 7.2% in July year-on-year, while its imports grew at the fastest pace in a year, as businesses rushed to take advantage of the truce in Trump's trade war with Beijing. But that also reflected a lower base for comparison, and manufacturers have slowed investments, hiring and production as they watch to see what comes. Chinese manufacturers also have ramped up shipments to Southeast Asia, Africa and other regions to help offset lost business in the US. Still, annual growth in industrial output fell to 5.7% in July from 6.8% in June, the National Bureau of Statistics said. Investments in factory equipment and other fixed assets rose a meager 1.6% in January-July, compared with 2.8% growth in the first half of the year. Property investments plunged 12% in the first seven months of the year, with residential housing investment dropping nearly 11%. The meltdown in the housing market hit just as the COVID-19 pandemic began, sapping one of the economy's main drivers of growth and causing dozens of developers to default on their debts. The crisis rippled throughout the economy, destroying jobs for millions of people. The government has sought to ensure that most housing that was paid for gets built, but sales remain weak despite a series of moves meant to entice families into back into the market. Since most Chinese families have their wealth tied up in property, the anemic housing market has been a major factor crimping consumer spending. In July, retail sales rose 3.7%, the slowest rate in seven months and down from a 4.8% increase in June. The unemployment rate rose to 5.2% from 5% as university graduates began looking for work. While consumer prices rose 0.4% in July from the month before, prices at the wholesale level slipped 3.6% from a year earlier in another indicator of relatively weak demand. Strike halts 3,000 public buses in Punjab, commuters bear the brunt
1 2 3 Nearly 3,000 buses operated by PRTC, Punbus and Punjab Roadways remained off roads on Thursday due to a strike by contract employees, leaving commuters in the lurch. A week ago, contractual workers demanded the cancellation of the kilometre-scheme tenders being floated for private bus operators and pressing for overdue salary payments and other job-related demands. The protest was temporarily suspended after govt intervention. However, the workers issued a warning that they would resume their protest beginning Aug 14 if their demands were not met. The employees are also demanding regularisation and addition of new buses to the PRTC and Punbus fleet. The workers claimed that as per the state govt transport policy of 1986, govt and private buses need to be operated at a 70:30 ratio, a move not being followed. Around 400 govt buses completed their 15 years of life in the last three years and are non-operating. Nevertheless, the state govt failed to add any new buses to the govt fleet, with only around 800 new buses being added in 2021, they claimed. The strike caused inconvenience to a number of commuters, especially women who have been provided free travel access in govt buses. "I had planned to go back home to Rampura Phul due to the long weekend but only private buses are operating and that too are overcrowded. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo On the busy routes, it becomes very difficult for women to travel in the overcrowded bus," said Navjot Kaur, a student from the university in Patiala. A PRTC employee union leader said that on several routes there are no or very few private buses operating in the state and the suspension of buses on these routes leaves a greater impact. Many commuters found themselves stranded without any way to reach their destinations. Resham Singh, president, PRTC-Punbus Employee Union, said they have been called for a meeting with govt officials . "If the meeting doen not bring any fruitful results, we may extend our strike," he said. Members of contractual employees union said that Rs 2.64 crore constitutes PRTC's daily receipt, while Rs 3 crore is that of Punbus. After historic EVM recount in SC, scorelines reversed & new sarpanch takes oath
1 2 Jind: His victory stamped by the first-ever recount of an EVM result in Supreme Court, Mohit Kumar on Thursday took oath as sarpanch of Buvana Lakhu village, 25km from the Panipat district headquarters. In the last panchayat elections in 2022, Kuldeep Singh was declared the winner and served as the sarpanch for the last 33 months. In the historic recount in SC on Aug 11, the scoreline was reversed and Mohit was found to have got 51 votes more than Kuldeep. A bench of Justices Surya Kant, Dipankar Datta, and N K Singh then ordered the Panipat deputy commissioner-cum-election officer to issue a notification within two days declaring the appellant, Mohit, elected, and allowing him to assume office immediately. He took charge on Thursday. There were seven candidates for the Buana Lakhu sarpanch post, with the main contenders being Mohit and Kuldeep. Six booths were set up, 65-70, but an error occurred at Booth 69, where the vote counts for the two main candidates got exchanged. "Of the 3,767 votes polled, I secured 1,051 votes while Kuldeep got 1,000. At Booth 69, the officer transferred 254 of my votes to my opponent, Kuldeep, which triggered the entire dispute," Mohit said on Thursday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo Mohit Kumar filed a petition before authorities, alleging irregularities in the counting of votes. A recount was ordered promptly and it revealed Mohit had indeed received 51 votes more than Kuldeep. "The same day (Nov 2, 2022), the district officer declared me the winner again after a recount. However, my opponent, Kuldeep, obtained a stay order from Punjab and Haryana high court, which remained in effect for over one and a half years," Mohit said. "I approached the tribunal in Panipat, which again ordered a recount. But my opponent once more secured a stay from high court. In July 2024, I filed a petition in Supreme Court, seeking a recount, but no decision was given at that time. Then, on July 31, 2025, I approached SC again, and on the same day, the court ordered a fresh count," he said. The unprecedented recount was carried out on the SC premises by the Supreme Court registrar in the presence of both parties and their counsel on Aug 11. It was a hard-fought victory for Mohit. "Justice was delayed, but it was served well. The entire village is happy. Now, the entire focus will be on development work. The irregularities in the election were committed by the presiding officer, which have now been rectified after Supreme Court's intervention," he said. "Today, after a long battle, I finally took the oath as sarpanch. During this period, no development work could be carried out.," Mohit said, adding: "The development works that have been pending for the past three years will be completed in the remaining two years. Our village is home to Olympian Navdeep and many other sportspersons. Building a sports stadium, a library will be among my top priorities."
