Dad whose family was killed in fire keeps bedside vigil for surviving daughter

Metro26-05-2025

A man whose wife and three children died in a fire at the family home in north London is 'devastated' and keeping vigil at the bedside of his surviving daughter who was also injured, a family friend said.
The dad, 43, suffered burns after trying to save his wife Nusrat Usman, 43, and their children Maryam Mikaiel, 15, Musa Usman, 8, and Raees Usman, 4, after the blaze broke out at their home in Tillett Close, Stonebridge in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Local councillor Tariq Dar MBE and Islamic scholar Mufti Abdul Wahab have named Usman Ghani as the man whose children and wife have been killed.
Usman, a former bus driver, 'lived for his family', according to a family friend who spoke to Metro.
The couple's surviving daughter, 13, is in hospital fighting for her life. A woman in her 70s was also taken to hospital but has since been released
The family friend said: 'He is a loving soul who lives for his family. He is struggling to eat or speak at the moment he is devastated and in total shock.
'He went back into the house to try to save his family and has burns. His daughter is seriously injured. He is at her bedside in hospital, praying she will pull through. It's all he has left to cling onto.
'He called her his little angel and that's what she is. She is his light, his hope. They are a British Pakistani family. My family had known theirs for 30 years. They are lovely people, so respected in the community.
'That's why so many people tried to help when there broke out. They are well loved neighbours.'
The friend said the family dog also escaped with its life from the inferno.

He added: 'The family dog survived. The dad loves the dog and it's another small thing for him as a crumb of comfort at this time. He is heartbroken. I have been trying to console him but what do you say to someone who has suffered this?
'His kids who died were wonderful. One of my children is in the same class as his and we are all struggling to cope with the loss. After he had to leave bus driving over health issues, he devoted himself to his family. Everything was for the kids.'
Mr Wahab wrote on Facebook: 'It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of the wife and three beloved children—a daughter and two young sons—of Brother Usman Ghani in a tragic house fire in Wembley last night. More Trending
'Please remember the entire family in your heartfelt duas during this incredibly difficult time.'
A 41-year-old man was arrested at the scene in connection with the incident.
He has since been bailed and was subsequently detained under the Mental Health Act.

Squawking flock of 40 peacocks terrorise locals in Staffordshire village

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Noisy peacocks have been keeping locals up in the early hours of the morning in a small Staffordshire village. The birds have been ruffling some feathers in Tutbury and the problem is so bad that the parish council has told people not to feed them. Droppings on driveways and vehicles, loud squawking and destroyed gardens are just some of the issues residents are fed up with. Retired dinner lady Marion West, 71, described the peakcoks as a 'bit of a pain'. She said: 'They're up half the night squawking and keep you awake. 'I squirt them with a water pistol if they come near me. If you're not careful, they poo everywhere, and it's such a mess. 'They eat your flowers too, they're a pain in the backside. When they walk on your roof, it sounds like you've got burglars.' Other residents who did not wish to be named described the birds as an 'absolute nuisance' who squawk during the early hours. But some, like Heather Hunter-Harris, 63, who has been living in the area for more than 16 years, think the peacocks are just part of the village's charm. She said: 'The peacocks have always been in Tutbury. I feel like if you take those out, you're taking Tutbury away. 'People come here to see the peacocks, and when they put their tails up, it looks lovely. 'You've just got to be tolerant, keep out their way, and let them get on with it.' According to council chair Francis Crossley, the growing peacock population in the village has created 'serious problems'. He said there were 26 peacocks during the council's last count but said there could now be up to 40. The council is asking everybody in the village to stop feeding the birds after residents complained that they are becoming an 'invasion of privacy'. More Trending Feeding the peacocks encourages them to roost and make loud, early-morning calls near homes, it added. Francis said: 'Some people love them, but some people can't bear them, it's a Marmite situation. 'They wouldn't attack anyone, but when they see their reflection, they do peck – like if they see a reflection in a car. 'As a Parish Council, we haven't really taken a view as they're not ours.' Warning after 250,000,000 bees escape when lorry crashes

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Locals have been warned to 'avoid the area' after a lorry overturned and spilled its unusual cargo. The huge truck was transporting about 70,000lb of beehives near Lynden in Washington State when it overturned on Friday. Thankfully the truck driver was unhurt, and it's thought the trailer overturned and rolled into a ditch after the driver miscalculated a tight turn. Not only were the truck and hives damaged, but an estimated 250million bees managed to escape and are flying free in the area. Whatcom County Sheriff's Office has warned people to stay away 'due to the potential of bee escape and swarming'. They also issued a warning to anyone who is allergic to bee stings to seek advice from the state department of health's website. Emergency services were called to the scene and were joined by more than two dozen local beekeepers who volunteered to restore the hives and hopefully rescue the bees. 'The goal is to save as many of the bees as possible,' the sheriff's office said, explaining the plan is for the majority of the bees to return to their hives to find their queen in the next couple of days. The crash site is set to remain closed 'until the rescue is complete'. Whatcom County Sheriff's Office added on Friday: 'At this time, on-scene work is done. Hive boxes from the overturned truck were recovered, restored and returned to use. 'By morning, most bees should have returned to their hives and those responsible for their delivery will be in charge. 'Until the rescue is complete, and at least into Saturday, Weidkamp Road will remain closed.' While the huge cargo of bees might seem like unusual cargo, over in the US many beekeepers transport their hives around the country to help pollinate farm crops. More Trending This is because honeybees aren't native to the US, and numbers are declining quickly, with commercial beekeepers losing on average more than 60% of their colonies last winter. The US Department of Agriculture says the honeybees pollinate around $15billion (£11.1billion) worth of crops every year. Meanwhile, some only use their bees to produce honey. London station where ‘fights broke out over lift' to close this weekend

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A station in London which has been plagued with escalator problems is now set to close for nearly a year. The escalator at Cutty Sark DLR station in Greenwich, south east London, has been broken since October last year and had issues prior to then, leaving passengers faced with either battling for a spot in one lift or walking up the 121-step staircase. The situation has got so heated that there have even been fights when the escalators were broken as people queued for the single customer lift, residents said. It is one of London's busiest DLR stations, with more than 7.6 million entries and exits in 2023, TfL figures show. Footage filmed by a resident on March 4 and shared with Metro shows a woman trying to push her way in past the queue while a member of staff intervenes. Another customer then shoves her back. However, Metro understands no fights have been officially reported. Karin Tearle, a photographer from Greenwich and a campaigner with the Escalate Now group, said that the problem 'jeopardises the reputation of the Royal Borough.' Passengers told Metro the escalator issue started almost ten years ago. This predates the time when TfL took over the station management in 2021. Cutty Sark station will close from Saturday, May 31, and remain shut until next spring so that new and more energy-efficient escalators can be installed for £4,000,000 of repairs, TfL confirmed last week. Karin said: 'Fights have broken out on those lifts. Other people have broken up a fight and I've seen one. The poor members of staff are also affected – it's not their fault this has happened.' She said the stairs can be 'really crowded and that can be dangerous.' As a photographer, she often has to carry heavy camera equipment and faces the choice of either lugging it up the stairs or waiting 'a long time' for the crowded lift. 'Some people will push to the front and leave wheelchair users out,' she said. Rachael Oakley, who travels through the DLR station with her disabled and elderly mum, said the station is 'unusable' for them because of the issues. They have waited '20 minutes for the lift' as facing the stairs is not an option for her mum, who also struggles with anxiety, Rachael told Metro. She said the station was not 'well thought through' from the beginning when it was built for the millennium. 'I've seen fights at the lift. The steps are unsafe to use. A wheelchair user or a young mother with a pram cannot go through the steps,' she said, adding that she is glad that the repairs will be carried out. Ben Grellier, TfL's head of operations for the DLR, said the transport authority knows the escalators 'have been causing disruption and frustration' for passengers. However, it is 'not possible' not fix the issue while the station stays open, he said. More Trending 'We apologise for any further disruption the station closure may cause, but it is not possible to replace these escalators with the station in operation,' he said. 'Once installed, the new state-of-the-art escalators will provide customers with reliable and easier access to DLR services at the station.' Matthew Pennycook, the MP for Greenwich and Woolwich, said on X: 'I appreciate fully that it will entail a period of disruption and will impact people's lives, but it is very welcome that TfL are doing what is necessary to permanently resolve the problem of broken escalators at Cutty Sark DLR Station.'
