Train Passenger Claims Assault Over Complaint, Posts Video. Railway Seva Responds

NDTV17-07-2025
Ensuring passenger safety remains the paramount concern for Indian Railways during train journeys. Regrettably, recent videos have emerged depicting confrontations between pantry staff and passengers, often triggered by complaints lodged against the staff. Despite interventions by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), such incidents of pantry staff physically assaulting passengers continue to gain widespread attention online. A recent video highlights one such disturbing episode where pantry staff were recorded violently attacking a passenger in a sleeper coach following a complaint about overcharging.
The incident happened on Tuesday aboard train number 11463, the Veraval-Jabalpur Somnath Express. The footage reveals an altercation, with two to three pantry staff members assaulting a passenger who had reportedly raised concerns about inflated prices for food and water.
A user @write2divya shared the video on X, commenting: "The video is of train number 11463. A complaint about overcharging for food and water was made through Twitter, but @RailwaySeva got their goons to beat up the passengers.@AshwiniVaishnaw ji has completely ruined the railway.@RailMinIndia, tell us what action has been taken against the goons shown in the video?"

In response, @RailwaySeva stated: "The concerned authorities are being informed. @Drmjabalpur @Wrdrmrjt We are always available to assist you. We will need your PNR number and mobile number. Please share your PNR number and mobile number with us via DM alternatively. You can also express your concern directly at http://Railmadad.indianrailways.gov.in or dial 139 for prompt resolution."
The DRM Jabalpur apologised for the incident, stating, "Sir, we regret the inconvenience caused to you. The said complaint pertains to yesterday, dated 15.07.25, when the train was running in the Baroda division. Nevertheless, considering it, correspondence is being made with IRCTC to cancel the contract of the side pantry of this train."
This is not an isolated case, as similar incidents of pantry staff retaliating against complainants have been reported multiple times. These recurring episodes raise serious questions about the safety of passengers during train travel.
In May, a vlogger posted a video that showed assault by railway pantry staff on the Hemkunt Express. Vishal Sharma claimed the incident occurred after he filed a complaint about overcharging for food and water. He captured the entire episode on video - how a group of people attacked him and tore his clothes, allegedly in retaliation for his complaint on the RailMadad app. IRCTC released a notification that said the services of the vendor were terminated for five years, and the ban can be further extended for two years.

New Delhi Railway Station Stampede: Probe Reveals Chaos, Headloads, And Systemic Lapses, Says Govt 18 lives lost and 15 critically injured—was it just a fallen bag or a colossal failure in crowd management? Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw's official reply in the Rajya Sabha blamed the New Delhi Railway Station stampede on a large headload slipping from a passenger, triggering panic. But the High-Level Inquiry Report paints a more disturbing picture: growing crowd density, poor infrastructure, and overloaded passengers. The stampede occurred on FOB-3 near Platform 14/15 on February 15, 2025. Despite claims of "sufficient crowd control," the reality suggests a lack of preparedness. The opposition has slammed the government for negligence, while families of victims ask—was this preventable? This video dives into the inquiry, missing red flags, and the new security promises. Probe found person with big headload fell on others, led to stampede at New Delhi station: Govt

A big headload falling from one of the passengers triggered the New Delhi railway station stampede that killed 18 people, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told Rajya Sabha on Friday (August 1, 2025). Also Read | Swelling crowd, continued sale of tickets led to stampede The Minister, in a written reply, shared the findings of the high-level committee constituted to examine the circumstances leading to the stampede this year on February 15. He said there was a gradual increase on passengers, many of whom were also carrying big headloads. Samajwadi Party MP Ramji Lal Suman asked the Railway Minister about the status of the report of the committee constituted to investigate the stampede and the corrective steps taken by the government. Also Read | Eyewitnesses recall tragedy, say many collided and fell on stairs and escalators Mr. Vaishnaw said the high-level inquiry committee has submitted its report for consideration. "As per findings of the report, an unfortunate incident on 15.02.25 happened on foot overbridge-3 stairs connecting platform 14/15 at New Delhi railway station. On the day of the incident, sufficient crowd management protocols were in place to handle the overall volume of passengers at the station," he said. "There was a gradual increase of passengers density on the FOB after 8.15 pm. Many of the passengers were carrying big headloads affecting smooth movement on the FOB. 'There was a big headload falling from one of the passengers and the pressure was passed on to the stairs of PF 14/15 stairs, resulting in the tripping of passengers on the stairs. This led to an incident at 8.48 pm on FOB-3, which was limited to the stairs of FOB. Consequently, passengers fell on each other." The Minister informed the House that in the incident, 18 people lost their lives and 15 others were injured. According to Mr. Vaishnaw, an ex-gratia amount of Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased, an amount of Rs 2.5 lakh each to the grievously injured and Rs 1 lakh each to other injured has been paid. "Accordingly, a total amount of Rs 2.01 crore has been paid to 33 victims and their family members," Mr. Vaishnaw said. The Railway Minister said the government has taken several actions to handle the heavy rush of passengers at stations, including the creation of permanent holding areas and access control measures — allowing passengers with confirmed tickets — at 73 identified stations, widening foot overbridges, installing CCTV cameras, developing war rooms at big stations, among others.
