As war of words turn ugly, reunion plans of Ambedkar brothers fizzle out

Indian Express24-07-2025
Anandraj Ambedkar, president of Republican Sena, had said on May 18 that he was willing to set aside differences with his elder brother and president of Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, Prakash Ambedkar. Anandraj Ambedkar had said, 'If they (Raj and Uddhav Thackeray) can come together, why can't the Ambedkar family unite?'
Exactly two months later, Prakash and Anandraj, grandsons of Dr B R Ambedkar, are caught in an ugly war of words with no signs of reconciliation.
Anandraj Ambedkar's decision to form alliance with the Shiv Sena led by Deputy CM Eknath Shinde last week has not gone down well with VBA. In an internal meeting of VBA, Prakash Ambedkar directed his followers to unite and fight all Dalit outfits which are using B R Ambedkar's name and are directly or indirectly aligning with right wing BJP/RSS.
Prakash Ambedkar has taken strong objections to younger brother Anandraj dismissing any threat to Constitution under ruling BJP-led NDA.
While alleging that Republican Sena has ideologically compromised its core principles by aligning with Shinde's Shiv Sena, which is in alliance with BJP-led Mahayuti in Maharashtra, Prakash Ambedkar said, 'The Republican Sena's alliance with the BJP ally Shiv Sena is not only against the movement's fight against BJP/allies to save Constitution, but also against the ideology of Phule-Shahu- Ambedkar.'
'It is now up to the followers of Phule, Shahu, Ambedkar whether they want to stand with a puppet of RSS/BJP whose core ideology is to replace Constitution with Manusmriti, or stand with someone whose ideology is to uphold and defend the Constitution,' said Prakash Ambedkar.
The sharp attack by Prakash against Anandraj indicates that the differences between the two factions are getting bitter. With Anandraj taking the decision to ally with Shiv Sena, the possibility of a reunion between the Ambedkar brothers is now a closed chapter.
Countering the charges, Anandraj said, 'Republican Sena has forged an alliance with Shiv Sena. We have done this alliance underlining the common agenda of welfare of oppressed and backward classes. In any case, Republican Sena has not joined BJP/ RSS. So, where is the question of compromising ideology. We are committed to Ambedkar's teachings and principles.'
Though Prakash and Anandraj have been working separately for past three decades, this is first time their differences are being played out in public.
A senior VBA leader known to Ambedkar family said, 'The Dalit leaders championing the cause of social justice and welfare of oppressed have failed to unite and work as a team. Unfortunately, everyone wants to become a leader. And it becomes easier for established parties, both ruling and opposition, to exploit this weakness to its advantage.'

Gujarat Confidential: From Pillar To Post

With only a couple of weeks left for the upcoming the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi festivities, commencing August 27, BJP corporator from Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC), Jagruti Kaka, was on Tuesday seen urging the civic body departments to complete the 'resurfacing' of a 900-metre stretch of road in her ward to facilitate the transport of a tall Ganesh idol, by a popular local pandal, instead of having to travel a longer roundabout to get to its venue. Kaka, said that she had been asking the local ward and the Road Department officers to repair the said stretch for three days, as bringing the trolley with the tall idol through the uneven road would risk damage to it. Kaka was seen running from one officer to another on Tuesday with a 6pm deadline to have the road repaired. Meanwhile, the VMC officials said that it was impossible to complete carpeting the road in such a short time. Moreover, it would incur an expenditure of about Rs 10 lakh, which would ultimately need to be broken down post-monsoon for smooth levelling. Terming the trend of 'one child' and 'no child' among Patidars as 'fatal', Ahmedabad based Patidar socio-economic organisation, Vishv Umiyadham, requested the community to have three to four children. Addressing the community gathering in Kutch's Nakhatrana recently, Vishv Umiyadham President RP Patel said that since the numerical strength of the community is gradually declining, Patidars should have three to four children. 'If (our) numerical strength decreases, then (our) social and political strength will also decrease. If the political strength decreases, then the strength of Sanatan Dharma will decrease. With declined numerical strength, you will have to fight for your existence,' he said. Referring to the high cases of foeticide among the Patidar community, Patel said that it is no longer the case, but now boards will be put up advertising 'uncles' available on rent.

AAP Leader Says Party Exposed BJP's Vote Theft, Congress Remained Silent

New Delhi: Amid the row erupted over Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's "vote theft" allegations, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Priyanka Kakkar on Tuesday alleged that a "massive vote theft scam" is currently underway in the country and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of "stealing votes" during the February 2025 Delhi Assembly elections. Kakkar also expressed disappointment over the Congress party's silence on alleged electoral irregularities in Delhi, despite raising similar concerns in Karnataka and Maharashtra. Speaking to ANI, the AAP leader said, "We stand with the country. Currently, a massive vote theft scam is underway in the country. AAP had shown how they (BJP) stole votes in the Delhi Assembly elections... We have always exposed the BJP's vote theft, but Congress has always remained silent on this issue." "Even today, when Congress raises the issue of SIR in Karnataka or Maharashtra, they still fail to acknowledge vote theft in Delhi. It is very unfortunate that at that time, they supported the BJP and said that whether someone's name is on the voter list or not, it doesn't matter to the public. This is very unfortunate," Kakkar added. Earlier today, Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge joined fellow INDIA bloc members in staging a protest in Parliament over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) issue. Several Opposition MPs arrived wearing white T-shirts emblazoned with the slogan '124 Not Out'. Prominent leaders such as Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar), MP Supriya Sule, and DMK MP Kanimozhi also protested on the issue. On Monday, in a show of unity, the INDIA bloc MPs took out a march from the Parliament to the EC headquarters in Delhi against the alleged election irregularities in the 2024 general election and against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. Rahul Gandhi said that the Opposition's fight is not a political fight but a fight to save the constitution. "The reality is that they cannot talk. The truth is in front of the country. This fight is not political. This fight is to save the Constitution. This fight is for One Man, One Vote. We want a clean, pure voters list," the Congress leader said. Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) on Monday responded to Rahul Gandhi's remarks, stating that the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha "still has time" to either submit a formal declaration substantiating his allegations of vote theft or apologise to the nation. Counter protest: Congress targets pro-BJP college managements for allowing students to participate in ABVP rally

Youth Congress workers held a counter protest in Mysuru on Tuesday to condemn the efforts of ABVP to allegedly instill negative sentiments about the Congress among students under the guise of its 'drug-free campus' campaign. KPCC spokesperson M. Lakshmana told reporters at the counter protest organised by Youth Congress activists in Mysuru that the Congress party will be forced to hold demonstrations outside the institutions of certain pro-BJP managements, which were allowing its students to participate in programmes organised by the BJP and its frontal organisations. Mr. Lakshmana said that he will lodge a complaint with the police to file cases against the managements of such institutions, and urged the government to withdraw the recognition of these educational institutions for 'allowing the students to be misused for political purposes'. He alleged that the speeches made by the leaders of the BJP and its frontal organisations at the demonstration organised by ABVP as part of its 'drug-free campus' campaign at Gun House circle in Mysuru on Tuesday were aimed at instilling negative sentiments about the Congress party and Muslims in the minds of the students. The aim of the demonstration organised by the ABVP was to defame the Congress government in Karnataka, Mr. Lakshmana said. Moreover, he stated that the narcotic drugs seized in Mysuru recently were part of a racket that had its roots in Gujarat and Maharashtra, which are ruled by the BJP. Claiming that drugs worth ₹25,000 crore had been seized in BJP-ruled States during the last ten years, Mr. Lakshmana blamed the Maharashtra police and the anti-narcotics sleuths of the Centre for providing 'wrong' information regarding the raid in Mysuru by exaggerating the worth of the seizure only to defame the Congress government in Karnataka. Seeking to clarify that the narcotic drugs seized in Mysuru was not MDMA, but Mephedrone weighing about 20 kg, Mr. Lakshmana said a that kilogram of Mephedrone costs about ₹20 lakh. Hence, the total seizure is worth ₹4 crore and not ₹400 crore as alleged, he added. While the drugs seized in Mysuru were part of a drug racket that had its roots in Gujarat and Maharashtra, the Mysuru City Police had done a good job by raiding the premises along with a team of police from Mumbai, he said.
