Coach Peseiro leaves Egypt's Zamalek after three months
-Zamalek ended Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro's contract by mutual consent, the Egyptian soccer club said on Wednesday, after less than three months in charge due to poor results.
"An agreement has been reached between Zamalek and coach Jose Peseiro to mutually terminate the contract," the club said on Facebook. "We wish you the best in your future endeavours."
Former Porto and Sporting Lisbon coach Peseiro, 65, joined Zamalek on February 14 to become only the fifth coach to lead both Egyptian rivals Zamalek and Al-Ahly.
However, Zamalek, the defending champions, were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup and the Egyptian League Cup under Peseiro, and a poor run in the league saw them slip to third place, seven points adrift of leaders Pyramids.
Peseiro has previously coached the national teams of Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, as well as the Saudi club Al-Hilal and United Arab Emirates' teams Al Wahda and Sharjah. REUTERS

Summer vacations must wait as 32 clubs head to US for expanded Club World Cup
[SINGAPORE] The odd-numbered years are usually when there isn't any major football tournament taking place in the summer. This year, however, marks a big shift from that tradition with the expanded Fifa Club World Cup kicking off in the United States next weekend. The sport's governing body Fifa caused a big shakeup when it announced that it changed the format from an annual seven-team tournament to a massive 32-team event to be held every four years. This latest edition – set to take place from June 14 to July 13 – is meant to be a prelude to the 2026 World Cup that will be staged across the US, Canada and Mexico. The 32 teams involved this year have been placed into eight groups of four, with each club playing their group opponents once. The top two from each section will progress to the round of 16, and from there it will be single-match knockouts all the way to the final. Inter Miami and their star player Lionel Messi will feature in the opening match, with the Major League Soccer team facing Egyptian club Al-Ahly at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on the evening of June 14 (June 15, 8 am kickoff, Singapore time). The championship match will take place on July 13 at the 82,500-seater MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey – the same venue where next year's World Cup final will be played. Real Madrid When Madrid signed Kylian Mbappe from PSG last summer, many thought the Frenchman would deliver the goals needed to win trophies this season. The 26-year-old did score plenty (38 in total) for Madrid, but his new team didn't have much silverware to show for it, except the Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup. Given a choice, those were probably the two trophies on the bottom of the priority list for Los Blancos. They came in second to Barcelona in La Liga, and were knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals. Lyon's Matic, Le Havre's Hassan given two-game bans after concealing Ligue 1's anti-homophobia badge
Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Nemanja Matic and Le Havre striker Ahmed Hassan have each been handed two-game bans with a further two matches suspended after they concealed Ligue 1's anti-homophobia insignia on their shirts, the French top-flight said. Serbian Matic, 36, had put on a tape over the anti-homophobia badge when he came on as a substitute during Lyon's 2-0 home win over Angers on May 17 which was the final day of the Ligue 1 season. His Lyon contract is set to expire at the end of the month. Egyptian Hassan, 32, also received the same punishment, with the incident having occurred during Le Havre's 3-2 win at Strasbourg. "In addition, the committee proposed to the player - who immediately accepted at the meeting - that he take part, within six months, in a campaign to raise awareness of the fight against homophobia in football..." Ligue 1 said in a statement on Thursday. Ligue 1 had planned for players to wear rainbow-coloured symbols on shirts or armbands and display messages in stadiums as part of its annual awareness drive. Yet participation has been uneven in recent years, with some players citing personal or religious reasons for opting out. Popovic's Australia perfect the art of qualifying ugly
SYDNEY - Tony Popovic would not deny that his Australia team are tough to watch at times but the former centre half has done what he was brought in to do and taken them to the brink of qualification for the 2026 World Cup. The Socceroos were distinctly second best to an understrength Japan in Perth on Thursday but Aziz Behich's late winner means they only have to avoid a 5-0 loss to Saudi Arabia in Jeddah on Tuesday to punch their ticket. "It was a special, special night," Popovic told reporters. "The outpouring of emotions when we scored, and obviously after the game, yeah, they are moments I'll always remember. "We've all played a part in getting us to this point, and we want to go to Saudi Arabia now and really finish the job off." Saudi Arabia was the site of Popovic's greatest triumph as a club coach in 2014, when his Western Sydney Wanderers team drew 0-0 with powerhouse Al Hilal in Riyadh to become Asian champions in only the second year of the club's existence. It was partly that continental experience that encouraged Football Australia to bring Popovic in as coach last September when Graham Arnold quit with the World Cup qualification in trouble. The football has not always been pretty but the Socceroos are unbeaten since he took over with four wins and three draws, having conceded just five goals and scored 14 in the seven games. Popovic acknowledged there was plenty of room for improvement but said the seconds before Behich's goal proved there was already a strong platform of resilience to build on. "Although football wise, we need to get better, and we will get better, but in that moment, the 90th minute, we had six players in the box, six players trying to score a goal," he said. "We were tough, we kept a clean sheet, and we've done something that many Australian sides have found hard to do." Australia had not beaten Asian powerhouse Japan in 10 games going back to 2009 before Thursday night and Popovic said that achievement should not be underestimated. "I understand why, now that I'm in this role, why it's hard to beat Japan," he said. "They are the best, and we want to challenge them to be the best, so we shouldn't shy away from that, and hopefully today, we take a big step forward knowing we can beat Japan." Despite the emotion of the last-gasp victory, Popovic said there was no danger of any complacency ahead of Tuesday's clash at King Abdullah Sports City. "It's been a really intense period since I've come in but everyone's embraced what we're aiming to do. And we're very close now to achieving our goal," he said. "We need to do a job in Saudi.
