John Varvatos releases new collab with John Lennon estate

Fashion Network10-06-2025
American designer brand John Varvatos has released a new collaboration with the John Lennon estate, the latest step in the house's rapid renewal.
'The collaboration fuses fashion and music — paying homage to the legend with graphic shirts, suiting and outerwear,' the New York label said in a release.
The collection references the iconic image of Lennon photographed on a Manhattan rooftop wearing a graphic New York City black and white T-shirt with cut-out short sleeves, which trumpeted his love for his adopted city. The updated version is made in khaki green, not white like the original.
There's also a really cool knit, overprinted with a famed photo of the rocker at his Steinway Model Z white piano, used when recording the Beatles' White Album. Or a crisp linen shirt with a spidery penciled self-portrait by the Liverpool -born rockstar.
The collaboration comes some 45 years after the tragic assassination of Lennon outside The Dakota apartment building on the Upper East Side, where he lived.
The Lennon launch comes before the opening of a new 3,200-square-foot John Varvatos store on Wooster Street in Soho on September 10, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the fashion brand's first store in the downtown district.
Greek-born, Michigan-raised, Varvatos was the key menswear designer for both Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein before launching his own brand in 1999.
After several changes of ownership and major problems during the pandemic, the brand — sans designer John Varvatos — was taken over by Lion Capital, which also controls All Saints. According to recent financial statements, the John Varvatos label posted annual sales of $86 million in 2023.

Paris deputy mayor calls for better regulation of tourism to avoid protests

Tourism in Paris is nothing new - the city welcomes between 35 million and 40 million visitors a year and has some of the most-visited tourist attractions in the world including the Eiffel Tower (7 million visitors per year) and the Louvre (10 million visitors per year). But those already impressive numbers seem to have received a post-Olympics boost with Frédéric Hocquard, the Paris deputy mayor in charge of tourism and the night-time economy, saying that the city has seen a significant post-Olympics bounce, with provisional figures showing a 5-10 percent increase on previous years. He added that the Olympics also seems to have changed the profile of visitors - previously tourists to Paris largely comprised of family groups or people wanting to visit cultural sites, this year has seen a big increase in younger visitors interested in nightlife and entertainment. Advertisement This year's Fête de la musique in Paris was much busier than usual, which organisers think was partly due to British and American influencers promoting the event in advance to their followers as 'France's best all-night party'. The Paris Olympics opening ceremony and the Games vibe of 'Paris est un fête' (Paris is a party) is credited with making the city a cooler destination for younger visitors. While welcoming the interest, Hocquard told French newspaper Libération that he believed the time had come to better regulate Paris tourism, or risk rejection from locals and possibly the type of anti-tourism protests seen in Spain and Italy. While remaining the world's most-visited tourist destination, France has so far managed to avoid the protests against over-tourism seen around Europe. READ ALSO : How has France avoided Europe's anti-tourism protests? He told the paper: "Paris is usually more of a family tourist destination, but we've had an influx of young, party-loving tourists this year. "The rules of tourism have been turned upside down. Now it's a mix of Fête de la Musique and Fashion Week. "For several months now, in certain places, we've been seeing tourists who say they've come to see a particular artist. When they're in Paris, they no longer just go to clubs for their last night out. "And for the first time, we've had tourists coming in droves during the first half of August. My question now is: will we see the same phenomenon for the rest of the year?" Advertisement He added: "I am sounding the alarm because Paris has been a tourist destination for a very long time - but I am not sure we have the capacity to absorb an increase in visitor numbers. "We are starting to see congestion in the centre of Paris. If we are not careful and do not regulate tourism after the Olympics, we risk the population rejecting tourists. We are not there yet, but we are asking for regulation." His solution is twofold - better regulation of certain tourist-related activities and a wider spread of tourists so they are not all staying in the same small area of central Paris. He said: "We need regulation - we need to get tourist coaches out of the city and have fewer flight slots. "We also need to spread the load across the greater Paris area - the city centre is saturated. "We work a lot with [the suburban département] Seine-Saint-Denis. The development of cycling also helps with this. On foot, you don't go two kilometres from your hotel, but by bike, it's easier to get around. It's also a question of public service, both in terms of transport and ensuring cleanliness. Apart from business tourism, we are no longer in the business of conquering new markets. "In short, we are no longer promoting Paris, and we are starting to regulate."

Jimmy Kimmel confirms Italian citizenship as Trump targets opponents

Celebrated American comedian and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel has revealed he has obtained Italian citizenship, following Donald Trump's comments that Kimmel's show could be 'next' on the chopping block after CBS cancelled Stephen Colbert's show. Kimmel, a longtime critic of Trump, referred to his dual citizenship during an appearance on The Sarah Silverman Podcast. 'I did get Italian citizenship,' Kimmel shared – something which was confirmed by Italian news agency Ansa, who said that he obtained Italian citizenship this year after proving his ancestral lineage. He noted that several American A-listers – including Ellen DeGeneres and Rosie O'Donnell - had also sought dual citizenship considering the current state of affairs in the US, with Trump targeting media personalities who don't politically align with him and are vocally critical of his administration. 'What's going on is… as bad as you thought it was gonna be, it's so much worse. It's just unbelievable. I feel like it's probably even worse than [Trump] would like it to be.' Kimmel has often criticised Trump in monologues on his show Jimmy Kimmel Live!. He has also spoken out against the president when hosting the Oscars, memorably fueling their feud in 2024 by reading out Trump's criticism of the ceremony before the announcement of Best Picture. Trump posted on Truth Social during the ceremony and called Kimmel a bad host, to which Kimmel responded: 'Well, thank you President Trump. Thank you for watching, I'm surprised you're still up – isn't it past your jail time?' The host has also referred to Trump as 'Commander-In-Thief", 'His MAGA-Sty", 'Jabba The Pizza Hut' and 'The Shart of the Deal' - in reference to Trump's book, 'The Art of the Deal'. Une publication partagée par Jimmy Kimmel (@jimmykimmel) The news of Kimmel's dual citizenship comes after the bombshell news that CBS was ending The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, which pulls no punches when it comes to slamming Trump. In a press conference last week, Trump stated: '(Jimmy) Fallon has no talent. Kimmel has no talent. They're next. They're going to be going. I hear they're going to be going. I don't know, but I would imagine because they'd get — you know, Colbert has better ratings than Kimmel or Fallon.' Trump doubled down in a Truth Social post: 'Next up will be an even less talented Jimmy Kimmel, and then, a weak, and very insecure, Jimmy Fallon. The only real question is, who will go first?' Kimmel fired back with an Instagram post referencing Trump's friendship with convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein: 'I'm hearing you're next. Or maybe it's just another wonderful secret' - a reference to a line in a letter to Epstein that Trump has denied writing that expresses hope that 'every day be another wonderful secret.' A post shared by Jimmy Kimmel (@jimmykimmel) Kimmel's fellow comedian Rosie O'Donnell recently shared fears that the show The View would also be axed for not bowing down to Trump. O'Donnell, who was a host on the show from 2006 to 2007 and has frequently feuded with Trump, wrote: 'You know what I just read today? ABC is 'reviewing the liberal bias' on 'The View'. The show with five women speaking their own opinions. That's the threat now. They say they're not cancelling it, they're just 'reviewing the bias,' which is code for – we're gonna cancel it, we're just trying to soften you up first.' The comedian moved to Ireland after Trump was re-elected, and has faced threats from Trump over her US citizenship. Kimmel has hosted the ABC late-night comedy show Jimmy Kimmel Live! for 22 years. The current contract for the show runs out in 2026.

Taylor Swift announces 12th album 'The Life of a Showgirl' for 'pre pre-order'

US popstar Taylor Swift announced her 12 th album, titled The Life of a Showgirl, for "pre pre-order" just after midnight Tuesday in posts on her website. Her online shop displayed blurred images of a record, CD and cassette tape overlaid with a glittery orange lock, explaining the album artwork would be "revealed at a later date." A disclaimer also notes that the release date has not yet been announced, and the album will ship before October 13. "So I wanted to show you something," the singer said in a video clip posted to her Instagram as she held up a vinyl album, its cover completely blurred. "This is my brand new album The Life of a Showgirl," she said in the clip from the New Heights podcast, hosted by her boyfriend, American football player Travis Kelce, and his brother, ex-NFL player Jason Kelce. "TS12!" Travis Kelce exclaimed in the video. The Life of a Showgirl is the follow-up to Swift's last studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, which was released last year and sold 1.4 million copies the first day. Since 2021, she has been making good on her vow to re-record her first six studio records in a bid to own the rights to them. In May, the 14-time Grammy Award winner, who was locked in a feud with record executives since 2019 over the ownership of her music, said she had bought back the rights to her entire back catalog for an undisclosed sum. The 35-year-old songwriter shattered records with her nearly two-year-long Eras tour that ended last year. It raked in $2 billion over 149 shows around the world, making it the most lucrative tour in music history. Tickets for the tour sold for sometimes exorbitant prices, and it drew millions of fans.
