Glastonbury viewers fume as The Searchers' final gig 'snubbed' by BBC
BBC fans were left feeling let down as The Searchers' live performance failed to reach TV screens. The Liverpool legends wrapped up an astonishing 70 years of touring with a landmark debut at Glastonbury Festival today.
Kicking off on Wednesday, June 25, the Worthy Farm festival will thrill music lovers until Sunday, June 29, boasting performances from a glittering array of musical talent. The top-billed superstars gracing this year's stages include The 1975, Olivia Rodrigo, and Neil Young, alongside other big names such as Charli XCX, Grammy-award victor Doechii, Rod Stewart, and The Prodigy.
Spotted in the company of John McNally and Frank Allen from The Searchers was none other than Sir Paul McCartney, all ahead of the band's final bow. Fans had their hopes dashed when they tuned in on Friday evening from 8pm to 9pm for the Acoustic Stage event only to find it absent from BBC iPlayer.
Despite the plethora of live content streaming across platforms, including stalwarts like the Pyramid Stage and newcomers such as Woodsies Stage – to name but a few – the omission of the Acoustic Stage did not go unnoticed. Disgruntled viewers took to social media, with one fan posting: "Surely The Searchers should be on one of the feeds live, last ever show." A second supporter queried: "Will the BBC show The Searchers set??"
With roots stretching back to the '60s and having started their incredible journey at the iconic Cavern Club amidst peers like The Beatles, Gerry and The Pacemakers, and The Swinging Blue Jeans, The Searchers' farewell performance symbolised a fitting tribute to their remarkable impact on the music world.
In a heartfelt sign-off, The Cavern Club bid their "bittersweet farewell" to a legendary group that's been synonymous with Liverpool for over 60 years. They said: "We know they'll take the same energy, warmth, and timeless tunes to the Glastonbury stage as they have to every gig over the years - from the cellar of The Cavern Club to the bright lights of international fame.
"While this may be their final show, their legacy will echo on - in their records, in the countless musicians they've influenced, and of course, here at The Cavern Club, where it all began. We'll be cheering them on at Glastonbury - and we know the whole of Liverpool will be too."
One of the original band members, John McNally, spoke with a buzz to the BBC about his unprecedented debut: "A Glastonbury debut at 83-can anyone top that? I don't think life gets any better, does it?
"There will be a few nerves, but in a good way, and we'll be nicely warmed up from our shows in June. We can't wait to see our fans again for this incredible final farewell."
Frank Allen gave a nod to his incredible six-decade stint with the band: "I have played shows across the world with The Searchers for over 60 years; Glastonbury has always been an ambition that has eluded us – until now.
"The Searchers are finally performing at the greatest music festival of them all. What a way to round off a tour and a career. I can't wait to get up on stage and give our fans one final blast."

Together, they built a family, welcoming three children over the years. Son Dinis was born in 2021, while Duarte was born in 2023. Their daughter arrived in November 2024. However, there is nowhere in the country quite like Tobermory. The capital town of the Isle of Mull, Tobermory was originally built as a fishing port in the late 18th century. Today, it is a popular tourist destination and is considered among the prettiest ports in the UK. Tobermory is perhaps most famous as the location of the beloved 2000s children's television series Balamory. The town's colourful seafront buildings feature prominently in the show. As reported by the Daily Record, the BBC has announced the return of Balamory after its last episode aired in June 2005. New episodes of the programme will debut next year, with original stars reprising their roles. Julie Wilson Nimmo, Andrew Agnew, Kim Tserkezie, and Julie Cadzow are set to return as Miss Hoolie, PC Plum, Penny Pocket, and Edie McCredie respectively. The revival will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer and CBeebies in 2026. In anticipation of Balamory's comeback, property experts at Sell House Fast have revealed how much homes in the area cost. They also investigated how prices have changed in the years since the show has been on air. According to Sell House Fast, the average cost of a detached house in Tobermory is £300,083. Meanwhile, semi-detached houses are priced at £255,000 on average. The experts also found that most homes sold in Tobermory over the past year were flats. These cost an average of £139,750. Overall, in the past year, property in Tobermory sold for an average of £221,947. This is slightly lower than the national Scottish average of £223,657. Sell House Fast stated that property prices in the town peaked in 2008. According to the experts, this indicates that the popularity of Balamory had "little impact" on prices, as the show ended years earlier. Jack Malnick, MD of Sell House Fast, commented: "With the filming of Balamory returning to the vibrant Scottish seaside town of Tobermory, residents and prospective buyers will be wondering if the show will impact the housing market. "Whilst homes can indeed increase in value when they feature in TV shows, it isn't always the case—and I don't see it being the case here. "House prices in Tobermory peaked in 2008, years after the show originally aired, which suggests that it had little impact on property prices in the town. "However, the show's return may well lead to an increase in a demand for short term accommodation in the town. Balamory had two million weekly viewers at its peak, and if the reboot has the same success, many young fans may want to visit the real-life town, offering an increase in tourist revenue and leading to more homeowners to capitalise on this demand by renting out their properties as holiday homes." For those looking to visit the charming town, in terms of holiday lets, there are plenty of options to choose from around Tobermory. One of these is a "beautiful bothy with sea views" that sleeps up to two guests, which can be booked for £375 for two nights through Airbnb. The traditional stone cottage sits high up in the town, with views out over the sea from the garden patio. Inside, there is a double bed "in a cosy nook" and a wood-burner for chilly evenings. Elsewhere, there is a flat to rent in one of the iconic buildings along Tobermory's waterfront. Also available through Airbnb, it can be booked for £280 for three nights. Sleeping up to two visitors, the apartment features one bedroom with an en-suite shower room. There is also a large living room, kitchen, and dining room at front of the building that offers "fantastic views" according to the listing. The BBC's 1995 adaptation featured Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet and Colin Firth as the dashing Mr Darcy. It is widely lauded as the best adaptation of the Jane Austen classic ever made. Those wanting to live their very own Jane Austen-inspired life can strut through the Queen Anne front pillared portico or wistfully meander through the mature gardens like the on-screen family. The historic country house, featuring a wood carved doorway reputedly by Grinling Gibbons as well as eight bedrooms.
